Chapter 14 - THE LEGACY OF ISABELLA

|
Two weeks later, the morning air in Oak Ridge Cemetery was crisp, clean, and filled with the scent of fallen maple leaves.
The sun hung high in a cloudless autumn sky, casting long, peaceful shadows across the rolling green lawns.
A newly carved headstone of polished white Carrara marble stood beneath the sheltering branches of a hundred-year-old oak tree.
Carved into the stone in elegant gold lettering were the words:
ISABELLA ROSSI DE LUCA
Beloved Wife, Fierce Mother, Unbroken Queen
1975 – 2015
Her Truth Restored Her Blood
Surrounding the grave were hundreds of fresh white lilies and yellow lemons, Isabella’s favorite scents.
Elena stood before the marble monument, wearing a dark wool coat, holding a small bouquet of wild lavender.
She knelt down on the soft grass, placing the flowers at the base of the stone.
“You won, Mom,” Elena whispered, her voice carrying on the gentle autumn breeze.
“Everyone knows what you did.”
“Everyone knows how brave you were.”
A warm, heavy hand rested gently on Elena’s shoulder.
She looked up to see Matteo standing beside her, dressed in a formal black coat, his silver hair catching the morning sun.
He looked down at the headstone, his eyes clear and peaceful.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out the antique silver locket containing Isabella’s miniature portrait.
Matteo knelt beside his daughter, placing the locket into Elena’s open palm.
“She gave this to me to protect my soul,” Matteo murmured.
“Now it belongs to you.”
Elena closed her fingers around the cool silver, feeling the warmth of her father’s hand over hers.
“What happens now, Matteo?” Elena asked, looking out over the quiet cemetery.
Matteo looked toward the iron gates where Luca and six security vehicles were parked at a respectful distance.
“Now, we build something new,” Matteo replied.
“The Commission has agreed to a complete restructuring of our assets.”
“We are divesting from the illegal ports and predatory loans.”
“The entire De Luca foundation is being transferred into legitimate businesses, community housing, and culinary education centers across the city.”
Elena smiled, surprised and deeply moved.
“You’re leaving the life?”
“I’m building the life your mother dreamed of,” Matteo said softly.
“She never wanted an empire built on blood.”
“She wanted a family that could sit down to dinner without looking over their shoulders.”
He stood up, offering his hand to help Elena to her feet.
She took it without hesitation, standing tall beside him.
“Are you keeping Bellavita?” Elena asked as they began walking slowly down the gravel path toward the cars.
“Bellavita doesn't belong to me anymore,” Matteo chuckled, a rich, happy sound that seemed to chase away the chill of the morning.
Elena blinked in surprise.
“Then who owns it?”
Matteo reached into his breast pocket and handed her an official deed embossed with the state seal of Illinois.
Elena looked down at the title.
The owner of Bellavita Restaurant was officially registered to: Elena Isabella De Luca.
“You are the head chef and the owner,” Matteo said proudly.
“You can run the kitchen however you see fit.”
“On one condition.”
Elena raised an eyebrow, a teasing smile playing on her lips.
“What condition, Don Matteo?”
Matteo grinned, wrapping his arm around her shoulders as they reached the waiting car.
“You must always keep Table Twelve reserved for your old man on Friday nights.”
May you like
Elena laughed, leaning her head against his shoulder.
“That can be arranged.”
