Chapter 12 - THE DAY MY MOTHER WENT INTO SURGERY|

My mother was scheduled for her heart procedure on a cold Monday morning.

The sky over Chicago was pale gray, and the hospital windows reflected a city that seemed to be holding its breath with me.

I arrived before sunrise carrying her favorite blue cardigan, a small bottle of hand lotion, and the worn family photograph she'd kept beside her bed for years.

In the photograph, I was seven years old.

My father was standing behind us with his hands resting on our shoulders.

My mother was laughing.

We'd taken the picture at a neighborhood carnival, three summers before my father died.

I stared at our smiling faces and wondered how much life could change without anyone noticing the moment it happened.

Mom was awake when I entered.

"You're early," she whispered.

"I couldn't sleep."

She smiled.

"Neither could I."

I sat beside her and held her hand.

For a while, we talked about ordinary things.

The flowers blooming outside her old apartment.

Rosa's granddaughter passing her college exams.

The terrible coffee sold in the hospital cafeteria.

We avoided discussing the procedure until a nurse came to prepare her.

Then Mom looked at me with frightened eyes.

"Claire, if something happens—"

"No."

"Sweetheart, listen."

I shook my head.

"Please don't say goodbye."

She touched my cheek.

"I'm not saying goodbye."

"I'm telling you that whatever happens, I want you to live."

I began crying.

"I don't know how to do that without you."

Mom smiled through her own tears.

"You've been living for me for so long that you've forgotten you have a life of your own."

I held her hand tighter.

"You're my life."

"I'm part of it."

"An important part."

"But I didn't raise you so your whole future would end at my hospital bed."

She reached beneath her pillow and took out a small silver ring.

It had belonged to my father.

She pressed it into my palm.

"Keep this safe until I wake up."

I closed my fingers around it.

"You're getting it back."

Mom smiled.

"That's the plan."

When the medical team arrived, I walked beside her bed until the doors leading to the procedure area.

I kissed her forehead.

"I love you, Mom."

"I love you more."

Then they wheeled her away.

The doors closed.

And I stood there holding my father's ring, terrified that the next time I saw her, she might not recognize me.

Luca was waiting in the family lounge.

He'd brought coffee for me and Rosa, though he hadn't touched his own.

I sat beside him without speaking.

After a while, he asked, "Do you want me to leave?"

I shook my head.

"No."

"Do you want to talk?"

"No."

He nodded.

"Then I'll sit here."

So he did.

For three hours, the most feared man I'd ever known sat quietly beside a frightened housemaid, asking for nothing.

He didn't make calls to impress anyone.

He didn't promise the doctors could perform miracles because he had money.

He simply stayed.

At noon, Detective Ramirez called.

Maya answered and stepped into the hallway.

When she returned, her expression was tense.

"Claire, I don't want to overwhelm you, but there's an important development."

I stood immediately.

"Is it about Vanessa?"

"Investigators located Tessa Ward."

"What did she say?"

"She's cooperating through her attorney."

My heart quickened.

Maya continued.

"She says Adrian ordered her to prepare the false hospital assistance documents using patient information obtained through the contractor arrangement."

I covered my mouth.

"And Vanessa?"

"Tessa says Vanessa personally directed which documents your mother would be asked to sign."

I looked at Luca.

His face darkened.

"Is Adrian still missing?" he asked.

"For now."

Maya paused.

"But investigators have evidence suggesting he's preparing another transfer involving accounts connected to Victor Hale."

Before anyone could respond, Dr. Patel appeared at the entrance to the lounge.

I forgot the investigation instantly.

I forgot Vanessa.

I forgot the stolen money.

All I could see was the doctor's face.

"How is my mother?"

Dr. Patel approached slowly.

"The procedure is finished."

My knees weakened.

"Is she alive?"

"Yes, Claire."

"Your mother made it through."

I began sobbing so hard I could barely hear the rest.

The doctor explained that the intervention had addressed the immediate problem, though my mother would require close monitoring and a careful recovery.

There were still risks.

But she had been given a chance.

I covered my face with my hands.

Rosa embraced me.

Luca stepped back, giving us room.

For the first time in days, I cried from relief instead of fear.

My mother was alive.

My mother was coming back to me.

And nothing Vanessa had done could erase that moment.

An hour later, while we waited to see Mom in recovery, Maya received another call.

Her expression changed as she listened.

Then she turned toward Luca.

"Adrian's second transfer attempt was flagged."

"Was it stopped?"

"Investigators and the bank are working on it."

She paused.

"But the attempted transfer revealed another account."

Luca frowned.

"Whose?"

Maya looked from him to me.

"It was opened under a different name, but the supporting identification and contact records point to Vanessa."

My pulse quickened.

"What name?"

Maya took a breath.

"Victoria Hale."

Luca went completely still.

May you like

Because Victor Hale was not simply Vanessa's business partner.

The financial records suggested she had been preparing an entirely new life using his name.
