Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN WHO PLANNED TO BECOME MRS. HALE|

When Maya told us about the account opened under the name Victoria Hale, Luca looked as though someone had struck him.

For a long moment, he simply stared at the wall.

Then he reached for the back of a chair and slowly sat down.

I'd seen Luca Moretti face armed men without showing fear.

I'd watched him make million-dollar decisions while barely changing his expression.

But the possibility that his wife had been planning an entirely different future with another man seemed to wound him in a way money never could.

"Victoria Hale," he repeated quietly.

Naomi nodded.

"The investigators believe the name was used as part of a false identity."

"Is there any evidence they were married?"

"Not that we've seen."

Luca looked away.

"But there are records suggesting Vanessa and Victor were financially involved long before she met you."

I felt my stomach twist.

Vanessa hadn't merely betrayed her husband after their wedding.

She may have entered his life already planning how to destroy it.

The following afternoon, Detective Ramirez met with Maya and Naomi to discuss the evidence that could be shared with us.

Adrian Vale had been located and arrested while attempting to leave the Chicago area.

His attorney had advised him not to answer questions immediately.

But investigators had obtained additional financial records and were examining electronic devices pursuant to legal authorization.

The documents appeared to connect Adrian, Vanessa, and Victor Hale through several companies that billed Luca's businesses for questionable services.

Those same companies had transferred money among themselves using descriptions such as medical assistance, administrative consulting, and property development expenses.

Some transactions might have been legitimate.

Others were becoming increasingly difficult to explain.

And at the center of the most suspicious transfers was an employee who had never possessed the authority to move a single dollar from Luca's accounts.

"Why did they choose my name?" I asked Detective Ramirez.

She looked at me sympathetically.

"The evidence suggests they expected you to be an easy person to blame."

I swallowed.

"Because I was a maid?"

"Because you had limited access to financial resources, and they believed you wouldn't be able to challenge their documents."

I lowered my eyes.

"Because nobody would listen to me."

The detective didn't contradict me.

Instead, she said something I would remember for the rest of my life.

"They made a serious mistake when they assumed your position in that house determined your credibility outside it."

Meanwhile, my mother was slowly recovering from her procedure.

The doctors were encouraged by her progress, although they warned that rehabilitation would take time.

She could sit upright for longer periods and had begun taking short, carefully supervised steps.

One afternoon, I found her standing beside her bed with a nurse supporting her arm.

"Mom!"

She smiled proudly.

"Look at me, sweetheart."

I rushed forward, tears filling my eyes.

"You're walking!"

"Only a little."

"That's enough."

She laughed softly.

"After all this, I'm not letting a few difficult steps defeat me."

I embraced her gently, careful not to hurt her.

For several beautiful seconds, there were no stolen millions, no forged signatures, and no terrifying newspaper headlines.

There was only my mother, standing on her own feet.

That evening, Luca visited us with news that several of the suspicious accounts had been restricted while investigators traced the money.

A substantial portion of the stolen funds had been located, although recovery would depend on the legal proceedings.

"Daniel believes we may recover most of the $2.4 million," Luca explained.

I looked at him.

"And the people who used those hospital patients?"

His expression grew serious.

"The hospital and investigators are reviewing those cases."

"What happens to them?"

"Anyone whose information was misused should have the opportunity to obtain assistance and pursue their rights."

I folded my arms.

"I don't want this to end with just my mother getting her money and care."

Luca studied me.

"I know."

I shook my head.

"No, I need you to understand."

"If there are fourteen families, there are fourteen families who deserve answers."

He nodded slowly.

"Then I'll support the investigation and provide the records they request."

"Even if they expose mistakes in your own companies?"

"Yes."

I looked into his eyes.

"That's the answer I needed."

The next morning, Tessa Ward provided investigators with a fuller account of her involvement.

Through her attorney, she acknowledged helping prepare fraudulent administrative documents and described how Adrian had instructed her to obtain patient signatures.

Her cooperation did not erase her responsibility.

But it helped investigators connect the paperwork to the people directing the scheme.

She also identified messages discussing the planned financial collapse of several Moretti properties and Victor Hale's efforts to acquire the associated debt.

The documents suggested Vanessa had expected to receive a significant payment after those transactions were completed.

Her false identity, Victoria Hale, was intended to help conceal part of the proceeds.

It wasn't evidence of a legal marriage.

It was evidence of a planned disappearance.

That night, Luca received a message from an unfamiliar number.

He read it once, then handed the phone to Naomi.

The message said Vanessa had something that could explain the entire operation.

She wanted Luca to meet her alone at the mansion.

No police.

No lawyers.

No Claire Bennett.

In exchange, she promised to surrender the original documents that could prove who had authorized the transfers.

Luca stared at the screen.

Naomi immediately advised him not to go.

He looked toward me.

I thought about my mother in the hospital.

About Daniel's bruised face.

About Rosa's frightened granddaughter.

And about the woman who'd stood under a warm chandelier while my mother froze outside.

"Don't give her another chance to control the story," I whispered.

Luca nodded.

He forwarded the message to Detective Ramirez.

By the following afternoon, investigators were preparing to examine additional records at the mansion.

But Vanessa was no longer there.

Her wardrobe had been emptied.

Several pieces of jewelry were missing.

And Gabriel discovered that she'd attempted to access a locked cabinet in Luca's private study shortly before leaving.

When the cabinet was opened, it contained copies of medical authorizations, payroll records, and correspondence linked to Adrian.

Most of the originals were gone.

But Vanessa had left one envelope behind.

On the front were two words written in red ink.

"CLAIRE BENNETT."

And inside was a photograph of my mother outside the gates, accompanied by a note.

"She should have kept her daughter quiet."
