Chapter 4 - THE PRICE OF HER SILENCE|

Khloe had attended hundreds of difficult business meetings.

She had negotiated with angry warehouse managers, impatient customs brokers, and corporate executives who believed deadlines were more important than federal regulations.

None of those experiences prepared her for the way Adrian Vale looked at her.

His smile was polished.

His voice was pleasant.

But his eyes suggested he had already decided how the meeting would end.

Marianne Blake gestured toward an empty chair.

“Khloe, please sit.”

Khloe remained standing.

“Before we begin, I want the compliance department included.”

Adrian sighed softly.

“I believe we're capable of resolving a simple administrative misunderstanding.”

“Someone used my credentials to approve a transaction I never authorized.”

“That is a serious accusation.”

“It's a documented discrepancy.”

Victor looked at Adrian.

“Let her finish.”

Adrian's jaw tightened.

Khloe placed her laptop on the conference table.

She opened the original supplier invoice, the corrected customs classification, and the revised domestic inventory instructions.

“These are twenty-four new medical refrigeration units,” she explained.

“They have specific serial numbers, manufacturer warranties, and distribution requirements.”

She highlighted the next document.

“This amendment describes them as obsolete equipment suitable for liquidation.”

Adrian leaned back.

“Asset classifications change.”

“Not without supporting documentation.”

“Perhaps someone forgot to upload it.”

“Then the shipment shouldn't have been released.”

Victor stepped closer.

“Was it released?”

Khloe hesitated.

“According to the system, it was scheduled for transfer last night.”

Victor turned toward Adrian.

“Did you authorize that?”

Adrian gave an indifferent shrug.

“Northstar handles overflow inventory.”

“These units weren't overflow inventory.”

“Victor, please.”

Adrian spread his hands.

“We're discussing refrigerators.”

“No,” Khloe said.

Everyone looked at her.

“We're discussing temperature-controlled medical equipment that clinics have paid for and are expecting to receive.”

She pulled up the purchase agreements.

“If the units are substituted, damaged, or diverted, the clinics may not receive the equipment they contracted for.”

“Then we replace them,” Adrian said.

“With what money?” Khloe asked.

Adrian's smile vanished.

Victor's eyes remained fixed on the contracts.

“How much is the shipment worth?”

“Approximately 1.8 million dollars at the contracted equipment value,” Khloe answered.

Silence settled over the room.

Marianne folded her hands tightly.

“Khloe, perhaps we should continue this privately.”

“No.”

Her voice surprised even her.

She took a breath.

“I'm sorry, Marianne, but I won't approve a release that doesn't match the underlying paperwork.”

Adrian gave a short laugh.

“Your employer might disagree with your approach.”

Victor looked toward him.

“Don't threaten her employment.”

“I'm not threatening anyone.”

“You just did.”

Adrian turned his attention back to Khloe.

“Ms. Hayes, every business has procedures for resolving complicated situations.”

“Then let's use them.”

“Sometimes those procedures involve professional discretion.”

Khloe understood what he was suggesting.

He wanted her to stop asking questions.

Possibly in exchange for money.

Possibly in exchange for keeping her promotion.

She remembered the months after Liam emptied her savings account.

She remembered checking her bank balance before buying groceries.

And she remembered the painful lesson that desperation made people vulnerable to offers they would otherwise reject.

“Mr. Vale,” she said evenly, “if you're suggesting that I conceal or falsely approve a transaction, my answer is no.”

Victor watched her with an expression she couldn't decipher.

Adrian's face reddened.

“You have no idea who you're dealing with.”

Khloe looked directly at him.

“Then I suggest we keep this conversation documented.”

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Victor reached for his phone.

“Nico.”

A voice answered immediately.

“Sir?”

“Place a temporary hold on all Russo Maritime transfers connected to Northstar Freight.”

Adrian shot upright.

“You can't do that!”

Victor ignored him.

“Have outside counsel coordinate with compliance and preserve the records.”

Then he ended the call.

Adrian stared at him.

“Do you understand how much money this will cost us?”

Victor's expression remained unreadable.

“Less than allowing someone to steal from us.”

“You're taking her word over mine?”

“I'm taking the documents seriously.”

Adrian's eyes moved toward Khloe.

For one frightening moment, she thought he might lunge across the table.

Instead, he smiled again.

“Of course.”

He stood.

“Let's all make sure the right facts come to light.”

Then he walked out.

Marianne immediately closed the conference room door.

“Khloe, this could become a legal disaster.”

“It already is.”

“Your credentials are on that approval.”

“Which is why I need the access logs preserved.”

Marianne looked exhausted.

“I'll contact legal.”

Victor remained near the window.

When Marianne left to make the call, Khloe found herself alone with him.

She crossed her arms.

“Did you know about the amended shipment?”

“No.”

“Did you know Adrian was transferring inventory through Northstar?”

“I knew we used the company.”

“That's not the same answer.”

Victor looked at her for a long moment.

“No,” he admitted.

“It isn't.”

Khloe appreciated the honesty.

But she wasn't satisfied.

“You arrived at my office two weeks ago because you wanted me to change a classification.”

“Yes.”

“And when I refused?”

“I had my people correct it.”

“Why?”

Victor almost smiled.

“Because you were right.”

Khloe studied him.

“People are afraid of you.”

“They have reasons.”

“Should I be?”

The question hung between them.

Victor answered carefully.

“You should never ignore information about someone simply because they were polite to you once.”

That wasn't the reassurance she had expected.

Strangely, it made her trust his answer more.

He moved toward the door.

“My attorney will contact your company's compliance department.”

“I don't work for you.”

“I know.”

“And I'm not going to cover anything up for you.”

“I wouldn't ask you to.”

As he opened the door, Khloe noticed a folder Adrian had left near the edge of the conference table.

It was marked with the Northstar Freight logo.

She pointed toward it.

“That's his.”

Victor stopped.

Khloe didn't open the folder.

She simply looked at the shipping reference printed on its cover.

Her breath caught.

The listed destination was a private storage facility in the Calumet industrial district.

Beside it was a handwritten notation.

SECONDARY ACCESS APPROVED — L. PRICE.

Khloe looked up.

Victor followed her gaze.

They understood the significance at the same moment.

Liam hadn't simply found a new job.

May you like

Someone had given him access to the very shipment Khloe had refused to release.

And whoever had arranged it knew exactly how to make her look responsible.
