Chapter 8 - THE CONFESSION SHE NEVER EXPECTED|

Khloe wanted to confront Marianne immediately.
Grace Whitman told her not to.
“You have a suspicion,” the attorney explained.
“Not proof.”
“But she requested a shortened report.”
“That may have an innocent explanation.”
“Like what?”
“An executive might request a summary for a meeting.”
Khloe folded her arms.
“And an executive might also omit something important.”
“Yes.”
Grace met her eyes.
“Which is why we preserve the full records before making accusations.”
Khloe hated how reasonable that sounded.
Her entire life had become a series of people telling her to be patient while others damaged everything she had built.
But Grace was right.
So Khloe cooperated with the formal investigation.
She gave the detective copies of Liam's threatening messages.
She provided Grace with the original shipping discrepancy report.
She documented the timeline of every meeting with Victor Russo.
She also began recording the small details she had previously dismissed.
Liam's unexpected new job.
Adrian's confidence during the conference room meeting.
The altered inventory classification.
The warehouse fire.
And the mysterious photograph that appeared online almost immediately afterward.
The evidence suggested coordination.
But suggestion wasn't enough.
Three days after her suspension, Khloe received a message from an unfamiliar number.
I NEED TO TALK TO YOU.
She stared at it.
A second message followed.
IT'S LIAM.
Her stomach tightened.
She blocked the number.
Within minutes, another message arrived from a different number.
PLEASE. VALE LIED TO ME.
Khloe froze.
She took screenshots and forwarded them to Detective Morales.
The detective called immediately.
“Do not meet him privately.”
“I wasn't going to.”
“He may have information relevant to the fraud investigation.”
“He can tell you.”
“That's exactly what we're going to ask him to do.”
Later that afternoon, Liam Price entered a police station on the North Side with an attorney.
Khloe wasn't present.
She didn't owe him another conversation.
But Detective Morales later arranged a meeting with Khloe and Grace to discuss the evidence Liam had voluntarily provided, subject to investigative restrictions.
The detective looked serious.
“He's admitting involvement in the unauthorized system access.”
Khloe felt a wave of nausea.
“How much involvement?”
“He says Adrian Vale offered him a contractor position at Northstar approximately seven weeks ago.”
“That was before the restaurant.”
“Yes.”
“Did Adrian know about me?”
“According to Liam, he asked detailed questions about your relationship.”
Khloe stared at her.
“Why?”
“Because Vale wanted information that could help someone impersonate you.”
The room seemed suddenly airless.
Liam had known her passwords years earlier.
He knew the names of her childhood pets.
He knew where she kept important documents.
He had spent years treating her privacy as something he could enter whenever he pleased.
Now that knowledge had been sold.
Morales continued.
“Liam provided personal information and helped a Northstar technical contractor access an administrative system.”
Khloe gripped the edge of the chair.
“Did he use my credentials?”
“He says the contractor created an approval record that appeared under your name.”
“So the approval wasn't mine.”
“That's what the emerging evidence indicates.”
Grace leaned forward.
“Has the technical activity been independently corroborated?”
“Investigators have identified records consistent with a privileged administrative override.”
Khloe closed her eyes.
For days, she had feared that nobody would believe her.
Now the evidence was finally beginning to catch up with the truth.
“Why did Liam do it?” she whispered.
Morales consulted her notes.
“Vale promised him fifteen thousand dollars and a permanent position.”
Khloe almost laughed.
Fifteen thousand dollars.
That was the price Liam had placed on her reputation.
After emptying their savings account, after frightening her in a restaurant, after threatening Dana and Maddie, he had been willing to destroy her career for another payment.
“He says he thought he was helping recover a disputed business debt,” Morales added.
Khloe looked up sharply.
“Do you believe that?”
“His claims will be tested against the evidence.”
“Good.”
The detective continued.
“He also gave us an audio recording.”
Grace straightened.
“Of Vale?”
“Yes.”
Morales explained that the recording had been obtained from Liam's phone and was being authenticated.
She read a preliminary transcript of a conversation between Liam and Adrian.
Vale's words were chilling.
“Make it look like Hayes authorized the release.”
Liam had asked what would happen if she challenged it.
Vale's answer was even worse.
“Then she becomes the explanation for the missing inventory.”
Khloe pressed her palms against her knees.
For the first time, she understood how carefully the situation had been designed.
They hadn't merely stolen equipment and hoped nobody noticed.
They had selected her as the person who would be blamed when someone did.
Morales closed the folder.
“There's more.”
Khloe looked at her.
“Liam admits he provided Vale with your current address and information about your sister.”
Khloe felt physically sick.
“He gave him Dana's address?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He claims Vale wanted leverage if you refused to cooperate.”
Khloe stood.
She walked toward the window and stared at the street outside.
People passed beneath the gray Chicago sky.
A woman pushed a stroller.
Two delivery drivers argued about a parking space.
Life continued as though nothing extraordinary had happened.
Behind her, Grace spoke softly.
“Khloe?”
She turned.
“Is he being charged?”
“The criminal investigations are ongoing,” Morales answered.
“Good.”
Khloe's eyes burned.
“I don't care whether Liam is sorry.”
Nobody interrupted.
“I don't care whether he was desperate.”
She looked toward the evidence folder.
“He knew what he was doing when he gave someone information that could be used against my family.”
Grace nodded.
“You don't have to forgive him.”
Khloe returned to her chair.
“I don't intend to.”
Before leaving, Morales shared one final detail.
Liam had also identified a planned financial transfer associated with the Northstar operation.
The transfer was scheduled to occur during Russo Maritime's annual charity gala.
The event would take place at an upscale Chicago hotel the following Friday.
Khloe frowned.
“What does a charity gala have to do with missing equipment?”
Morales's expression darkened.
“We believe Vale may be using the event as cover for several large financial transactions.”
“And Victor?”
“We're still establishing what he knew.”
Khloe glanced at her phone.
There was a new message from Victor.
ADRIAN HAS CALLED AN EMERGENCY BOARD MEETING.

A second message appeared.
HE'S TRYING TO REMOVE ME FROM MY OWN COMPANY.
