Chapter 14 - The Vow in Blood

The chapel was a cathedral of shadows and whispers.
Every pew was filled with the royalty of the American and European underworld—men with scarred faces, bespoke Italian suits, and cold, calculating eyes, flanked by wives draped in emeralds and mink. Every single one of them had killed, commanded, or betrayed to be in this room.
Yet, as the heavy brass organ chords shook the stained glass, every head turned to watch me walk.
My limp was there, subtle but undeniable, a rhythmic hitch in my stride that Marcus covered expertly with his steady, measured pace beside me. I held my head high, my eyes locked not on the five hundred killers watching my every move, but on Luca.
He stood taller than any man in the room. The sheer intensity of his gaze cut through the distance, burning away the cold fear that had gripped my spine. When I reached the bottom of the altar steps, Marcus gently placed my gloved hand into Luca’s.
Luca’s fingers closed around mine with crushing, possessive warmth. He leaned down, his voice a low vibration only I could hear. "You took their breath away, *mia regina*."
The elderly Sicilian priest, Father Bernardo—a man who had baptized Luca, buried Helena, and absolved three generations of Moretti sins—cleared his throat, his hands trembling slightly over his leather-bound missal.
"Dearly beloved," the priest began, his cracked voice echoing off the vaulted stone ceiling. "We are gathered here before God and this holy family to unite Luca Salvatore Moretti and Emma Jane Vance in holy matrimony..."
The liturgy moved forward in a blur of Latin chants and heavy incense. Christian stood three feet to Luca’s right, holding the velvet box containing the wedding bands—heavy platinum bands engraved with the Moretti griffin. Christian’s posture was textbook perfection, the dutiful brother, the loyal pillar of the empire.
Yet, as Father Bernardo reached the blessing of the rings, Sofia, sitting in the front row between two armed guards, suddenly dropped her basket of rose petals.
The silver basket hit the stone floor with a sharp *clatter*.
A collective murmur rippled through the front pews. Sofia let out a small, sharp gasp, clutching her throat. Her face had suddenly gone pale, beads of cold sweat breaking out across her forehead.
"Emma..." Sofia’s tiny voice carried across the silent sanctuary, weak and trembling. "My chest hurts. I can't... I can't breathe."
Luca turned instantly, his paternal instinct overriding every scrap of mafia protocol and wedding tradition. He broke away from the priest, taking two massive strides toward the front pew. "Sofia!"
"Wait!" Christian’s voice cut through the air, sharp and commanding. He stepped quickly between Luca and the pew, holding up a placating hand. "Luca, don't break the circle. It’s an anxiety attack—the noise, the crowd. Marcus, take the child to the anteroom and give her the inhaler from the nursery."
"No," I shouted, my voice slicing through the vaulted chapel like a whip.
The five hundred guests froze. The organist stopped playing. The silence was absolute.
I cast off my veil, letting the lace pool onto the stones, and dropped to my knees beside Sofia. I pressed my hand against her forehead. Her skin was burning, but beneath the fever, her pulse was erratic, fluttering like a dying bird—the exact symptoms Helena had described on page two of her letter.
*An enzyme deficiency... catastrophic organ failure without the synthetic treatment...*
"This isn't an anxiety attack," I said, looking up, my eyes locking onto Christian with murderous certainty. "Her lungs are constricting. She’s suffering from cellular collapse. Where is the medicine, Christian?"
Christian’s face went stone-cold. "Emma, you are hysterical. You’re ruining your own wedding. Marcus, get the child out of here!"
"Don't touch her!" Luca roared, his voice shaking the stone foundations of the chapel. He drew his sidearm from beneath his tuxedo jacket—a sacrilege inside the chapel that sent shockwaves through the attending capos. He aimed the black barrel directly at Christian’s chest.
"Luca!" Christian gasped, taking a step back, his hands raised. "Have you lost your mind? In front of the families? Over a sick child?"
"You spoke of an inhaler," Luca growled, his eyes feral with primal fury. "Sofia has never had asthma in her life. She has never used an inhaler. How did you know she would have trouble breathing today, Christian?"
Christian’s polite facade cracked for the first time. A dark, ugly sneer curled the corner of his lips.
"Because her synthetic booster was due at noon today, cousin," Christian said softly, his voice dropping into a chilling, venomous pitch that barely carried past the altar. "And I made sure the clinic in Zurich canceled the shipment three days ago."
A collective gasp echoed through the chapel as several capos in the front rows reached into their coats.
Before anyone could draw, four of Christian’s personal security guards stepped out from the shadows of the sacristy, their submachine guns aimed directly at Luca and me.
"Nobody move!" Christian barked, stepping behind the protection of his armed men. "One twitch from Marcus, and Sofia doesn't live to see sunset! The synthesized compound is stable for only forty-eight hours outside cold storage. There is only one master batch left in existence, Luca. And it’s not in Zurich."
Sofia whimpered in my arms, her small body convulsing into a terrifying spasm. "Emma... it hurts... it hurts so bad..."
"I’ve got you, my love, I’ve got you," I wept, cradling her against my chest, tears streaming down my cheeks, ruining the makeup and the silk.
Luca stood unmoving, the gun still locked on Christian, but his eyes were filled with the devastating agony of a man who realized his entire life had been built on a bed of poisonous lies.
"Helena..." Luca whispered, his voice cracking with unbearable grief. "You... you did this to Helena?"
"Helena was weak!" Christian spat, his aristocratic mask completely shattered. "She refused to sign over the Caldwell ports! She wanted Sofia to be raised away from the family, in some peaceful civilian paradise! I offered her an easy way out—a quiet grave, while I took the reins of the syndicate. She chose to swallow the hemlock to spite me!"
"And where is the cure?" Luca snarled, stepping forward, heedless of the four automatic weapons pointed at his skull. "Where is my daughter’s medicine, Christian? Give it to me, or I swear to God I will flay your skin from your bones in front of this entire congregation!"
"You want the vial?" Christian laughed, a cold, manic sound echoing off the stone walls. "Then you sign the abdication papers on the altar, Luca. You step down as Don of the Moretti family. You name me head of the Commission. And maybe—just maybe—I’ll let the little bastard live."
Sofia gasped, her tiny hand slipping limply from my lace gown, her eyes rolling back toward the vaulted ceiling.
May you like
"Luca!" I screamed, terror ripping through my soul. "She’s slipping! We don't have time!"
