Chapter 8 - The Shattered Glass

The scream ripped through the silence of the lodge at four in the morning.
It wasn't a child's nightmare. It was a sharp, piercing sound of absolute terror that echoed down the timber hallway from Sofia’s bedroom.
Luca was out of bed before my eyes had even fully adjusted to the dark. He moved with the terrifying speed of a trained predator, grabbing a heavy semiautomatic pistol from the locked biometric safe in his nightstand.
"Stay here," he ordered, his voice stripped of all warmth, hard and deadly as iron. "Lock the door behind me."
"Luca—"
He was already gone, barefoot, slipping into the dark hallway like a ghost.
A second later, the sharp, concussive *crack* of shattering glass echoed through the house, followed by the heavy thud of boots kicking through splintered wood.
Panic surged through my veins, ice-cold and paralyzing.
*Sofia.*
I ignored Luca’s command. I couldn't stay in that room while his daughter was in danger. I threw open the bedroom door and sprinted down the hallway, the lingering ache in my ankle completely swallowed by an overwhelming surge of adrenaline.
The door to Sofia’s room was hanging off one hinge, smashed inward.
Inside, the cool night wind was howling through a shattered picture window overlooking the rear deck. Glass littered the floor like jagged diamonds.
Sofia was huddled in the far corner of her bed, clutching her stuffed rabbit, screaming in raw hysteria.
Standing over her was a man dressed in black tactical gear, his face obscured by a dark balaclava. But he wasn't looking at Sofia.
He was grappling with Luca.
The two men crashed into the heavy oak dresser, sending lamps and porcelain figurines smashing to the floor. The intruder was massive, but Luca fought with a feral, terrifying brutality. Luca drove his elbow into the man’s throat, followed by a vicious knee to his ribs. The intruder gasped, dropping a heavy crowbar, and drew a combat knife from his tactical vest, slashing blindly in the dark.
The steel blade tore through Luca’s forearm. Blood sprayed across the pale wallpaper.
Luca didn't even flinch. He grabbed the man’s wrist, twisting it with a sickening *snap* of bone, and slammed his head back into the solid timber wall. The intruder went limp, his eyes rolling back, and crumpled to the floor in a heap of broken limbs.
"Emma! Grab Sofia!" Luca roared, clutching his bleeding arm, his gun raised toward the shattered window.
I didn't hesitate. I vaulted over the broken glass, ignoring the sharp bites of shards piercing through the soles of my wool socks. I reached the bed, scooped Sofia into my arms, and pulled her tightly against my chest. She buried her face in my neck, sobbing uncontrollably, her tiny body shaking like a leaf.
"I've got you, baby, I've got you," I whispered frantically, shielding her head with my arm.
Suddenly, a second figure appeared in the shattered window frame.
The silhouette was slimmer, moving with frantic, uncoordinated desperation. The beam of the outdoor floodlights illuminated the figure’s face as she stepped through the broken glass, a small snub-nosed revolver clutched in two shaking hands.
It was Isabella.
Her face was unrecognizable. The flawless, aristocratic beauty of Manhattan high society was entirely gone, replaced by the hollow, manic features of an unhinged madwoman. Her designer trench coat was torn, smeared with mud and pine sap, and her eyes were wide, bloodshot, and wild.
"You think you can destroy my life?" she screamed, the sound hysterical, echoing over the wind. "You think you can drag my father to prison and leave me with nothing?"
Luca instantly stepped between the gun and where I stood holding Sofia. He raised his own weapon, his bleeding arm steady, his sights locked onto the center of her chest.
"Drop the gun, Isabella," Luca said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Drop it now, or I will end you where you stand."
"Go ahead!" she shrieked, tears carving clean lines through the dirt on her cheeks. "Shoot me! My father is being arrested by the FBI right now! Our accounts are frozen! My name is ruined! I have nothing left, Luca! Nothing!"
Her wild, bloodshot eyes shifted from Luca, locking onto me.
"It was supposed to be mine," she hissed, her finger tightening on the trigger. "The money. The house. The name. It was all supposed to be mine until that little gutter rat crawled into our lives!"
She swung the barrel of the revolver toward me.
Everything happened in a fraction of a second.
Luca fired—the deafening roar of his pistol tearing through the small bedroom.
At the exact same instant, Isabella’s gun went off.
I threw my entire body over Sofia, twisting my back toward the window, wrapping my arms, my shoulders, my life around the little girl.
A sensation like a white-hot iron rod slammed into my left shoulder, spinning me backward. The breath exploded from my lungs. The world tilted violently on its axis, the sound of gunshots dissolving into a high, piercing whine in my ears.
I hit the floor hard, keeping Sofia cradled safely beneath me.
Across the room, Isabella collapsed backward through the shattered window, tumbling onto the wooden deck outside, lifeless before she even hit the ground.
Footsteps pounded into the room. Marcus and three armed security guards burst through the broken doorway, tactical rifles raised, but the fight was already over.
"Emma!"
Luca’s voice sounded muffled, distant, as if he were calling to me from the bottom of a deep well.
He was on his knees beside me instantly, his hands frantically searching my body. He gently lifted Sofia out from beneath me, handing the crying child to a pale, shaken Marcus.
"Take her to the lower vault," Luca commanded hoarsely, not once looking away from me. "Secure the perimeter!"
Luca turned back, his hands pressing down hard on my left shoulder. When he pulled his hand away, his palm was covered in slick, crimson blood.
The pain arrived then—a blinding, suffocating agony that made my vision swim with black spots. I gasped, choking on the cold mountain air, my teeth chattering uncontrollably.
"Luca..." I whispered, my voice sounding paper-thin.
"Stay with me, Emma! Look at me!"
The billionaire, the ruthless titan who had brought governors to their knees, was crying. Silent, frantic tears spilled down his face as he ripped off his shirt, pressing the fabric brutally against the gunshot wound in my shoulder to stem the bleeding.
"You're going to be fine," he pleaded, his voice breaking with a terror I had never heard in a man before. "The medevac helicopter is ten minutes out. Dr. Evans is on board. Do not close your eyes, Emma. Look at me! Look at your husband!"
"Sofia..." I coughed, a metallic taste coating my tongue. "Is she... safe?"
"She doesn't have a scratch on her," Luca wept, his forehead pressing against mine, his tears mixing with the blood on my collar. "You saved her. You saved my daughter. Now you have to stay and let me save you."

The darkness pressed in from the edges of my vision, thick and heavy, pulling me down into an abyss of ice and shadow. The last thing I felt was the desperate, crushing grip of his hand holding mine, and the steady, frantic beat of his voice calling my name into the dark.
