Chapter 12 - THE DAY THE MORETTI EMPIRE CHANGED HANDS|

The emergency board meeting began at nine o'clock the following morning.

Nine directors entered the Moretti Shipping conference room.

Seven wore expensive suits.

Two carried folders thick with legal documents.

And every one of them knew that the company was facing the worst scandal in its history.

I sat near the back beside Rachel Whitmore.

Rosa had asked me to attend as her personal guest.

She remained at the hospital, where her doctors had approved a brief video appearance.

Luca stood at the head of the long conference table.

He wore a dark suit instead of his usual black tuxedo.

He looked exhausted.

But there was something different about him.

For years, he had ruled his companies through fear and personal loyalty.

Today, he had come prepared to surrender part of that control.

"Before we begin," he said, "there are several matters this board needs to understand."

One director interrupted.

"Where's Dominic?"

Luca looked toward him.

"My uncle is facing a criminal investigation."

The room erupted.

Another director stood.

"That's outrageous."

"Dominic has managed this company for decades."

Luca placed a folder on the table.

"Then he should have no difficulty explaining the records investigators have obtained."

He waited until the room became quiet.

"Nine years ago, our company accepted an investigation that wrongfully blamed Thomas Bennett for a fatal warehouse fire."

I lowered my eyes.

Luca continued.

"I signed the company's response."

"That decision caused serious harm to an innocent employee's family."

"I take responsibility for failing to examine the evidence."

Several directors exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Then Luca said something nobody expected.

"I am commissioning an independent review of every questionable transaction connected to Victor Bellini and Dominic Moretti."

One director protested.

"You'll destroy our reputation."

Luca looked directly at him.

"Our reputation was damaged when we allowed wrongdoing to continue."

"Investigating it is how we begin repairing that damage."

Rachel distributed documents explaining the proposed governance reforms.

The company would suspend the disputed waterfront deal, preserve its records, cooperate with investigators, and establish independent oversight.

Any director implicated in misconduct would be referred to counsel and the appropriate authorities.

Then Rosa's face appeared on the conference screen.

The room fell silent.

She sat upright in her hospital bed.

Her silver hair had been brushed neatly.

A blue cardigan rested around her shoulders.

"Good morning," she said.

Several directors hurried to greet her.

Rosa raised one hand.

"Please sit."

Her voice was weak but unmistakably firm.

"I understand someone has been telling people I'm no longer capable of making decisions."

Nobody answered.

Rosa smiled sadly.

"Breaking my hip didn't break my mind."

I felt tears rising.

She continued.

"I built this family alongside my husband."

"I watched this company grow from three trucks and a rented warehouse."

"And I refuse to let anyone use my age as an excuse to steal what Frank worked for."

One director cleared his throat.

"Mrs. Moretti, the trust documents—"

"Are being challenged as fraudulent," Rachel interrupted.

"Until the matter is resolved, no disputed transfer should be relied upon."

Rosa looked around the virtual meeting.

"I have retained independent legal counsel."

"I have not voluntarily transferred my voting authority to Dominic or anyone else."

She paused.

"And I support suspending the Bellini redevelopment agreement."

A director raised his hand.

Another followed.

Within minutes, the board voted to preserve the status quo, cooperate with the investigation, and halt work connected to the disputed agreement pending legal review.

Luca closed his eyes.

For the first time in years, he seemed relieved not to have absolute power.

Then Marco entered the room.

He whispered something into Luca's ear.

Luca looked up.

"Victor Bellini has been detained at the aviation terminal."

A stunned silence followed.

I gripped the edge of my chair.

Marco continued.

"Investigators are also executing search warrants at several Bellini properties."

Rachel's phone began vibrating.

She checked the message.

Then she stood.

"Vanessa has been located."

"Where?" Luca asked.

"At a private storage facility."

"What was she doing there?"

"Investigators believe she was attempting to destroy records associated with the warehouse redevelopment."

Luca looked toward the conference room windows.

Outside, Chicago moved through another ordinary morning.

Cars crossed the streets.

People hurried toward their offices.

Somewhere, families were having breakfast without knowing how close our lives had come to being destroyed.

The meeting adjourned an hour later.

As the directors left, Rosa remained on the screen.

"Luca?"

He approached.

"Yes, Mama?"

"Your father would have been proud that you chose the truth."

Luca looked down.

"I don't deserve that."

Rosa's eyes softened.

"Then spend the rest of your life becoming someone who does."

She turned toward me.

"And Claire?"

"Yes, Mrs. Moretti?"

"Thank you for standing beside us."

I shook my head.

"You stood for all of us today."

Rosa smiled.

"No, sweetheart."

She touched the edge of her hospital blanket.

"I sat for all of us."

We laughed through our tears.

Then Rachel's phone rang again.

This time, her expression became serious.

She listened without interrupting.

When she ended the call, she looked toward me.

"Claire, the investigators have recovered information about your father's death."

I stopped breathing.

Rachel continued.

"Thomas made it out of the warehouse alive."

"I know."

"He was found later that night beside his damaged vehicle, several miles away."

My knees weakened.

"The original report attributed the crash to his impaired condition after the fire."

"What are they saying now?"

Rachel took a slow breath.

"They found evidence suggesting another vehicle deliberately forced him off the road."

I stared at her.

For nine years, I had believed my father died because he couldn't escape the fire's consequences.

Now there was another possibility.

May you like

He might have survived the flames.

Only to be hunted down because he knew the truth.
