Chapter 9 - THE ASSISTANT WHO COULDN'T LIVE WITH THE TRUTH|

Evelyn Hart appeared at the police station three days later.

She had dark circles beneath her eyes and a small suitcase in her hand.

Detective Ruiz called Luca that morning and asked whether I would be willing to give a statement about the envelope delivered at the hospital.

When I arrived, Evelyn was sitting alone in an interview room.

She looked nothing like the confident wedding coordinator I remembered.

Her perfect makeup was gone.

Her blonde hair hung loosely around her face.

And her hands shook around a paper cup of water.

The detective explained that Evelyn had agreed to speak with an attorney present.

I remained outside until the investigators completed the first portion of her interview.

Then Evelyn asked to see me.

"Claire," she whispered when I entered.

I stopped near the doorway.

"You threatened me."

She nodded.

"I know."

"You delivered a photograph of my dead father with a warning."

"I know."

"Why?"

Tears slid down her cheeks.

"Because Vanessa told me she would ruin my little sister's life if I didn't."

I folded my arms.

"That doesn't make what you did harmless."

"No."

Evelyn looked down.

"Nothing I did was harmless."

For a moment, I wanted to hate her.

Then I remembered the way Rosa had screamed on the staircase.

I remembered the broken cane.

And I realized that Evelyn knew exactly how it had happened.

"Tell me what Vanessa made you do."

Evelyn began crying harder.

"The morning of the wedding, she told me Rosa was being difficult."

"She said Rosa threatened to expose a family scandal before the ceremony."

I waited.

"Vanessa told me to take Rosa's cane from her bedroom and decorate it with a ribbon."

"That was a lie, wasn't it?"

Evelyn nodded.

"She gave me a small saw."

My stomach turned.

"She told me to weaken the wood beneath the handle."

"Did you know Rosa could fall?"

"I knew it was dangerous."

"Then why did you do it?"

Evelyn covered her face.

"My sister Lily is nineteen."

"Victor paid for her medical treatment when she was younger, and he holds the debt over our family."

"Vanessa said he would demand repayment immediately and make sure Lily lost her scholarship."

I stared at her.

"So you chose to hurt another woman to protect your sister."

Evelyn nodded.

"I made the worst decision of my life."

She reached into her handbag and removed a folded printout.

"This is the work order Vanessa gave the contractors."

I examined it.

The instruction specified removal of the brass handrail from the grand staircase before eight o'clock.

It also ordered that the wall mountings be covered with floral arrangements.

Evelyn's handwritten notes appeared along the side.

One sentence made me shiver.

Rosa must use the main staircase for the family photographs.

I looked up.

"Vanessa planned where Rosa would walk?"

"Yes."

"She told the photographers to gather at the bottom."

"She wanted everyone distracted."

I sat down.

"Did she expect Rosa to die?"

Evelyn hesitated.

"I heard her talking to Victor."

"What did they say?"

"Vanessa said the fall only needed to leave Rosa unable to attend the upcoming board meeting."

"Victor told her an old woman falling down marble stairs could easily be worse."

I felt cold all over.

Evelyn began crying.

"I thought Vanessa would stop."

"I thought she'd change her mind."

"But I didn't stop her."

I looked directly at her.

"Why come forward now?"

"Because she tried to take Rosa from the hospital."

Evelyn's voice broke.

"I helped arrange the fake transport company."

I stood abruptly.

"You did what?"

"I didn't know they were planning to take her somewhere she couldn't be found."

"Claire, I swear I didn't understand until Victor told me to burn the paperwork."

She handed me a memory card.

"I made copies."

Detective Ruiz entered and accepted the card for evidence processing.

Evelyn continued speaking.

She had saved messages, contractor instructions, and a voicemail in which Vanessa complained that Rosa had survived the fall.

She had also preserved photographs of the cane before and after it was cut.

The evidence did not erase Evelyn's responsibility.

She could still face criminal charges.

But her cooperation gave investigators a much clearer account of the planned attack.

When our conversation ended, Evelyn looked toward me.

"Do you think Rosa will ever forgive me?"

I considered the question.

Then I answered carefully.

"Forgiveness belongs to her."

"Not to me."

Evelyn nodded through her tears.

"I understand."

As I turned to leave, she called my name.

"Claire, there's one more thing."

I stopped.

"Vanessa wasn't supposed to marry Luca only for his money."

I turned around.

"What do you mean?"

"Victor promised Dominic that after the wedding, they'd gain control of the waterfront redevelopment agreement."

"But they still needed Rosa out of the way."

"Why?"

"Because she was going to vote against it."

Evelyn took a shaky breath.

"And because the redevelopment plans included destroying the last surviving evidence from the warehouse fire."

I stared at her.

The demolition.

The false transport.

The forged documents.

Everything was connected.

Then Evelyn whispered something even worse.

"Dominic didn't just know about the plan."

May you like

"He helped write it."

"And he's scheduled to meet Luca tomorrow morning to ask him to hand over control of the company."
