Chapter 5 - The Warrant

Arthur Vance looked like old money carved out of granite. He was in his late fifties, dressed in a bespoke charcoal trench coat with a cashmere scarf tucked precisely at his neck. His silver hair was slicked back, and his pale blue eyes held none of the reckless temper Isabella possessed. Arthur was a predator who operated with surgical, bureaucratic cruelty.

Luca stood in the center of the foyer, his firearm concealed once more beneath the hem of his sweater, though his posture remained coiled like a spring.

“Breaking my window, Arthur?” Luca said, his tone deceptively conversational. “I thought a man of your supposed pedigree knew how to use a doorbell.”

Arthur stepped over the threshold, his leather shoes crunching softly over the shattered stained glass. The two state marshals followed closely behind him, their hands resting cautiously near their utility belts.

“Consider it an act of urgency, Luca,” Arthur replied smoothly, pulling a folded legal document from his breast pocket. “When an unfit parent attempts to spirit a minor child away to evade a lawful custody investigation, urgent measures are required.”

Luca didn't move. “You have thirty seconds to explain why two state marshals are trespassing on private property before I have my security detail remove you in body bags.”

One of the marshals bristled, but Arthur held up a gloved hand, smiling a thin, poisonous smile.

“This is an emergency protective order, issued twenty minutes ago by Judge Miller,” Arthur stated, holding the paper forward. “Citing credible evidence of child endangerment, severe domestic violence within the home, and the illegal concealment of evidence regarding Elena Moretti’s death.”

From the shadows of the archway, Emma pressed a hand against her mouth to stifle a gasp. *Domestic violence?*

“Domestic violence,” Luca repeated, his voice dropping into a register so dark it made the hair on Emma’s arms stand up. “You’re grasping at straws, Arthur.”

“Am I?” Arthur chuckled, stepping aside. “Isabella gave a sworn deposition at four this morning. She documented multiple instances of physical intimidation. And, of course, there is the matter of the household governess.”

Arthur’s cold gaze swept past Luca, piercing directly into the dim corridor where Emma was standing.

“Come out here, Miss Hayes,” Arthur commanded.

Emma’s breath hitched. She didn't want to step into the light, but she knew hiding would only make her look guilty. She stepped out from behind the archway, her chin lifted high, her black splint held prominently against her chest.

Arthur’s eyes lingered on the splint, a satisfied gleam flashing in his gaze.

“Look at that,” Arthur said smoothly, addressing the marshals. “Just as Isabella testified. Fractured bones. A violent altercation occurring in the butler’s pantry yesterday afternoon. Luca Moretti, in a fit of rage, injured an innocent employee—and then forced my daughter out into the street when she attempted to intervene.”

Emma’s jaw dropped. The audacity of the lie was breathtaking.

“That is an absolute lie!” Emma shouted, stepping into the grand foyer, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. “Mr. Moretti didn't touch me! Isabella did this! She slammed the pantry door on my hand because she was jealous of Sofia!”

Arthur Vance barely looked at her. He waved her words away like an annoying insect.

“A classic trauma response from an intimidated subordinate,” Arthur said dismissively. “You’re paid twenty-five dollars an hour to keep your mouth shut, Miss Hayes. Of course you’ll defend the man who signs your checks. But the physical evidence speaks for itself. Severe domestic battery under this roof. Sofia Moretti is in imminent danger.”

Arthur turned back to the lead marshal. “Officer, execute the warrant. Secure the child.”

The marshal stepped forward, reaching for his radio. “Mr. Moretti, where is the minor?”

Luca took one single, terrifying step forward.

The atmosphere in the foyer warped instantly. Luca’s eyes were completely devoid of warmth, filled with the lethal resolve of an apex predator cornered in his own den.

“You take one more step toward the stairs,” Luca said, his voice dropping to a low, lethal hum, “and I will show you what real violence looks like.”

“Luca, stand down!” the marshal warned, unholstering a taser.

“Wait!” Emma’s voice rang out, sharp and commanding.

Everyone stopped. Even Arthur Vance frowned slightly at the volume of her interruption.

Emma walked directly toward Arthur Vance, stopping three feet away. Despite her aching hand and her simple uniform, she looked entirely fearless.

“You say Isabella gave a sworn deposition?” Emma asked.

“She did,” Arthur replied coldly. “Signed and notarized.”

“And she testified that Mr. Moretti injured my hand in the pantry yesterday afternoon?”

“Precisely.”

Emma reached into her apron pocket with her uninjured left hand and pulled out a small, silver flash drive.

Luca’s eyes narrowed slightly, watching her. Arthur Vance’s expression hardened.

“What is that?” Arthur demanded.

“Mr. Moretti’s late wife, Elena, was very protective of Sofia,” Emma said, her voice steady and deliberate. “Before she died, she installed a hidden nanny-cam inside the decorative trim of the butler’s pantry clock. She wanted to make sure the staff were treating Sofia properly when they were preparing afternoon snacks.”

Emma lifted the drive so the marshals could see it clearly.

“I checked the local memory cache this morning before Mr. Moretti woke up. The camera records high-definition audio and video directly to an encrypted local server. It captured everything, Mr. Vance. It shows Isabella cornering me. It shows her screaming at me. And it shows her grabbing the brass handle of the door and slamming it shut on my fingers with all her strength.”

Arthur Vance’s face turned the shade of curdled milk.

“That’s... that’s impossible,” Arthur stammered, his aristocratic composure cracking for the first time. “The cameras in the service wing were disconnected during the renovation last year!”

Emma smiled a cold, victorious smile.

“How do you know which cameras were disconnected, Mr. Vance? Unless your daughter checked beforehand?”

The lead marshal paused, glancing between Emma and Arthur Vance. “Sir, if there is video evidence of the altercation, this warrant is based on a falsified police report. Filing a false report of a felony is a Class D offense.”

Arthur’s eyes burned with furious hatred. He glared at Emma as if he wanted to strangle her where she stood.

“You’re bluffing,” Arthur whispered viciously. “You little gutter rat, you’re holding an empty thumb drive.”

“Would you like the marshals to plug it into Mr. Moretti’s laptop right now?” Emma challenged, not backing down an inch. “We can watch it together on the wall monitor. I’m sure the local news would love a copy as well.”

Arthur clenched his fists. The silence in the foyer was deafening.

Luca stepped beside Emma. The subtle curve of a lethal smirk played on his lips. He placed a heavy, protective hand on Emma’s shoulder, feeling the tension radiating through her body.

“You have ten seconds to get off my property, Arthur,” Luca said, his voice dripping with venom. “Before I have these marshals arrest you for conspiracy to commit perjury.”

Arthur stared at Luca, then glared at Emma with an intensity that promised murder. He reached out, snatching the legal warrant from the marshal’s hand, and stuffed it roughly back into his pocket.

“This isn't over, Luca,” Arthur hissed through clenched teeth. “You might have bought yourself twenty-four hours with this little parlor trick. But the board meets tomorrow morning. By Friday, Moretti Enterprises will be in receivership. And you will be bankrupt.”

Arthur turned on his heel and stormed out into the morning fog, the two state marshals following swiftly behind him, clearly unwilling to be dragged down with him.

The heavy front door clicked shut.

Emma stood frozen on the marble floor. Suddenly, the adrenaline that had kept her standing drained completely from her limbs. Her knees buckled.

Before she could hit the floor, strong arms caught her.

Luca scooped her up effortlessly against his chest, cradling her as if she weighed nothing at all. He looked down at her pale, sweating face, his dark eyes ablaze with an emotion she had never seen in him before.

“Emma,” he breathed, carrying her toward the grand sofa in the drawing room. “Where on earth did you get a nanny cam from Elena?”

Emma rested her head against his solid chest, exhausted to the bone, and let out a faint, trembling laugh.

May you like

“I didn't,” Emma whispered, holding up the tiny silver flash drive with trembling fingers. “It’s just Sofia’s favorite cartoon movies. I lied.”
