Chapter 8 - The Trap

Emma felt the air leave her lungs in a violent rush. “No,” she gasped, clutching the edge of the steel table. “No, no, no. Sofia was with Dante! She was in the armored vehicle heading north!”
Luca moved like lightning. He slammed his hand against the vault’s intercom console, depressing the broadcast button.
“Isabella,” Luca snarled, his voice deep, gravelly, and lethal. “If you lay a single finger on my daughter, there is no place on this earth you can hide from me.”
Through the static of the intercom, Isabella’s laughter echoed, cold, shrill, and unhinged.
“Oh, Luca, you’re still so arrogant,” she purred. “Did you really think Dante was loyal to you? Dante’s brother owes six million dollars to my father’s gaming syndicate in Atlantic City. A single phone call from Arthur, and Dante turned that armored SUV right around at the first toll booth.”
Emma pressed her forehead against the cool metal of the table. A wave of sickening dread washed over her. Sofia. Sweet, innocent Sofia, who held stuffed animals and cried when Emma’s hand was hurt, was in the hands of a sociopath who had engineered a fatal car crash three years ago.
“Put her on the speaker,” Luca commanded, his knuckles turning white on the console. “Let me hear her voice.”
There was a scuffle on the other end, followed by the muffled sound of a child weeping.
“Daddy?” Sofia’s tiny voice cut through the static, trembling with absolute terror. “Daddy, where are you? The bad lady grabbed my arm! She says you’re hiding in the basement!”
“Sofia!” Luca called out, his voice cracking with desperate fatherly love. “Listen to me, sweetheart. Daddy is right here. I am coming out. Do you hear me? Look at the floor, close your eyes, and think of the sea turtle story. Daddy is coming.”
“Hurry, Daddy! Please!”
The audio was abruptly cut off by Isabella’s harsh voice returning to the line. “You have three minutes, Luca. Open the vault door. Leave your weapon inside. Bring the brass box and that little orphan maid with you. If you don't step into the cellar by the count of one hundred and eighty, Sofia takes a very long fall down the main staircase.”
The intercom clicked dead.
Silence descended upon the bunker, suffocating and absolute.
Luca stood before the heavy steel door, his chest heaving. His face was a mask of cold, terrifying calculation. He didn't panic; he transformed. The aristocratic businessman was gone, replaced by a ruthless tactician whose entire world was on the line.
“Luca,” Emma said, standing beside him, her splinted hand aching fiercely. “What do we do?”
“We give them what they want,” Luca said quietly.
Emma stared at him. “You’re surrendering?”
“A Moretti never surrenders,” Luca whispered, turning to face her. His eyes burned with an intense, burning fire. He picked up his firearm, checked the chamber, and slid it into the waistband at the small of his back, covering it loosely with his sweater. Then he retrieved the cassette tape from the brass box, slipping it into Emma’s apron pocket.
“Listen to me very carefully, Emma,” Luca said, placing his large hands on her shoulders. His gaze was fierce, unyielding. “Isabella wants the brass box. She thinks the evidence is inside the papers. She doesn't know the audio cassette is the real weapon.”
“What are you going to do?”
“I am going to walk out there and draw every piece of their attention,” Luca said. “Arthur and Isabella will focus entirely on me. When the confrontation begins, you do not stay by my side. You grab Sofia and run for the wine cellar tunnel behind the eastern arch. It leads to the carriage house.”
Emma’s heart hitched. “I’m not leaving you!”
“Emma!” Luca gripped her tighter, his fingers digging into her arms with desperate passion. “You are the only person in this world I trust with my daughter’s life. Do you understand me? You took a fractured hand for her. You bluffed an army for her. I need you to save my child.”
Tears spilled over Emma’s lashes. She looked into his dark, tortured eyes and saw not an employer, but a man who had completely given his heart over to her guardianship.
“I’ll protect her,” Emma promised, her voice choking with emotion. “With my life.”
Luca’s expression softened for a fraction of a second. He leaned forward, his forehead pressing against hers, his breath warm against her lips.
“And I will come back for both of you,” he whispered.
Luca pulled away, picked up the empty brass box, and punched the override code into the vault door.
The heavy hydraulic bolts hissed back. The steel door swung outward with a deep, echoing groan.
Luca stepped out first into the dim, shadowy cellar. Emma followed three paces behind, her heart hammering violently against her ribs.
The cellar was filled with armed men. Five private security contractors in tactical vests stood flanking the stone archways, assault rifles lowered at the ready.
Standing beneath the central hanging bulb was Arthur Vance, dressed in his impeccable overcoat, holding a cigar between two fingers. Beside him stood Isabella, wearing a beige trench coat, her face twisted into a smug, venomous grin.
And kneeling on the cold stone floor in front of Isabella, her hands tied with plastic zip-ties, was Sofia.
The little girl’s face was streaked with tears. The moment she saw Emma and Luca, she let out a muffled sob. “Daddy! Emma!”
“Shut up, brat,” Isabella snapped, digging the toe of her designer heel into the girl’s shoulder.
Luca’s eyes flashed with murderous fury. “Take your foot off my daughter, Isabella. Now.”
Isabella sneered, stepping back slightly, her eyes locking onto the brass box in Luca’s hand. “Look at the mighty Luca Moretti, dragged out of his hole like a rat. Did you bring the ledger, darling?”
“Everything Elena left behind is in this box,” Luca said, holding it forward. “The inspection reports. The maintenance logs. The financial affidavits.”
Arthur Vance chuckled, exhaling a thick plume of gray smoke into the damp cellar air. “You were always predictable, Luca. A sentimental fool. Elena died because she couldn't accept the reality of power. And now, you will lose your empire because you couldn't keep your mouth shut.”
Arthur gestured to the lead contractor. “Take the box. Kill the girl and the maid. Leave Luca for the marshals—we’ll stage it as a tragic murder-suicide triggered by his financial collapse.”
The contractor took two steps toward Luca.
That was the moment the world exploded.
A sudden, concussive boom shattered the foundation above them. The cellar ceiling rained dust and stone fragments as the heavy wooden wine racks along the north wall collapsed inward in a cascade of splintering oak and shattering glass.
From the service tunnel behind the collapsed racks, Dante—his face bloodied, his tactical vest torn to shreds—emerged with a combat shotgun blazing.
“Mr. Moretti, down!” Dante roared.
Luca didn't flinch. In a fraction of a second, he lunged forward, throwing the heavy brass box straight into the face of the contractor approaching him. The metal corner struck the man’s nose with a sickening crunch, dropping him instantly.
Luca drew his concealed weapon from behind his back, firing twice into the center mass of the nearest guard.
“Emma! Sofia! NOW!” Luca roared over the deafening gunfire.
Emma didn't hesitate. She threw herself across the wet stone floor, sliding on her knees until she reached Sofia. With her uninjured left hand, she scooped the terrified child against her chest.
“I’ve got you, baby, I’ve got you!” Emma cried, shielding Sofia with her own body as bullets chipped away at the ancient masonry around them.
Isabella screamed in fury, pulling a small silver pistol from her trench coat pocket and aiming it directly at Emma’s head.
“You ruin everything, you little bitch!” Isabella shrieked, her finger tightening on the trigger.
Before Isabella could fire, Luca collided with her like a freight train.
He tackled her into the massive stack of vintage wine casks, sending hundreds of heavy bottles crashing to the stone floor in an ocean of red wine and shattered glass. The silver pistol flew from Isabella’s grip, clattering across the wet floor directly to Emma’s feet.
“Run, Emma!” Luca yelled, pinning Isabella’s wrists against the stone floor as Arthur Vance scrambled toward the exit stairs in blind panic. “Take the carriage tunnel! GO!”
Emma grabbed the silver pistol with her left hand, shoved Sofia ahead of her, and bolted into the dark eastern corridor.
