Chapter 11 - The Photograph Nobody Was Supposed to See|

Two days after the wedding, Nora Whitfield returned to the mansion carrying a black leather portfolio.

The wedding planner looked exhausted.

Her carefully styled hair was pulled into a loose ponytail.

She had apparently spent most of Monday answering questions from attorneys and investigators.

Luca met her in the study.

I remained nearby because Nora had specifically asked to speak with me.

"Claire," she said, "I owe you an apology."

I was surprised.

"For what?"

"For not speaking up on Saturday."

She glanced at Luca.

"I knew something was wrong with the procession."

Luca leaned against his desk.

"Then tell us exactly what happened."

Nora opened her portfolio.

"Three weeks before the wedding, Vanessa approved the original family procession."

She removed a printed page.

Sophia's name appeared directly beside Luca's.

Just as Madison had said.

Nora continued.

"Then, on Friday afternoon, Vanessa instructed us to replace the programs."

"Why?" Luca asked.

"She claimed Sophia was emotionally unstable and had agreed not to participate."

Luca's jaw tightened.

"Did you speak to Sophia?"

"No."

"Did you speak to me?"

Nora looked down.

"No."

"Why not?"

"Vanessa said she was handling it privately with you."

Luca exhaled.

Nora's eyes filled with tears.

"I should have verified it."

I touched her arm.

"You weren't the person who wanted to hurt Sophia."

"No," she whispered.

"But I helped someone who did."

She opened another envelope.

"There's something else."

Inside were several photographs.

The first showed Vanessa standing beside Adrian Vale in the ballroom on Friday.

The second showed them examining a stack of newly printed wedding programs.

The third captured Vanessa handing a paper to the printer's delivery representative.

Nora pointed toward the last photograph.

"Look at the corner of the page."

Luca leaned closer.

A familiar heading was visible.

VOLUNTARY DECLARATION OF PARENTAL DISENGAGEMENT.

My blood ran cold.

"That's the document Sophia gave him."

Nora nodded.

"The photographer was taking behind-the-scenes pictures for the wedding album."

Luca studied the image.

"Did Vanessa know these were being taken?"

"Probably not."

Nora swallowed.

"She had instructed the photographer to stay in the garden, but he came inside because the weather changed."

Luca looked at the photograph again.

"Can we obtain the original files?"

"They're already being preserved."

Nora took out her phone.

"I also contacted the photographer, Luis Romero, when I learned what was happening."

"And?"

"He remembered something unusual."

Luca's eyes narrowed.

"What?"

"Vanessa asked whether the timestamp metadata could be removed from the photographs."

The room fell silent.

Nora continued.

"She claimed she wanted a more artistic wedding album."

I stared at the pictures.

A wedding program.

A forged parental declaration.

And the bride's personal attorney standing beside them.

For the first time, the conspiracy had become visible.

But Nora wasn't finished.

"I also have photographs from Sunday morning."

I looked up sharply.

"Sunday?"

"The photographer returned to collect his equipment after the reception was canceled."

Nora opened another folder.

One photograph showed the staff removing floral arrangements from the ballroom.

Another showed Vanessa speaking to a security guard near the eastern staircase.

I recognized the man immediately.

"Eli Turner."

Daniel stepped closer.

"That's him."

The photograph had been taken at ten-fifty-six Sunday morning.

Vanessa stood beside Eli, holding a small velvet jewelry box.

My heart began pounding.

"That's the box she showed me."

Luca looked at Daniel.

"Can you identify the contents?"

Daniel shook his head.

"Not from this photograph alone."

Nora nodded.

"But it places the box in Vanessa's possession on Sunday."

I stared at the image.

The same morning she had threatened me.

The same morning Sophia had asked whether I'd leave her.

Luca carefully placed the photograph on the desk.

"Send the original files to Detective Carter."

Nora nodded.

"Already arranged."

Daniel's phone vibrated.

He glanced at the message.

Then he looked at Luca.

"Sir, the investigators have located Eli."

"Where?"

"At his apartment."

"And?"

"He's agreed to speak with them."

Luca folded his arms.

"Good."

Daniel hesitated.

"There's more."

"What?"

"The technical review identified the device used to disable the cameras."

Luca leaned forward.

"Was it Eli's?"

"His assigned security terminal."

Daniel paused.

"But the login was accessed with temporary credentials issued for the wedding."

Nora frowned.

"Temporary credentials?"

Daniel nodded.

"They were authorized for vendor coordination."

"By whom?" Luca asked.

Daniel looked at the printed access list.

"Adrian Vale's office."

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The missing cameras.

The changed wedding programs.

The forged signature.

The attempt to remove Sophia.

And the diamond brooch.

Every road seemed to lead back to Vanessa and Adrian.

Luca slowly sat down.

"I thought she wanted to marry me."

Nora looked at him sadly.

"Perhaps she wanted what marrying you would give her."

He rubbed his face.

"I was so determined to make a fresh start that I ignored everything happening in front of me."

I stepped closer.

"Mr. Moretti, Sophia still wants that fresh start."

He looked up.

"She deserves one."

"Then give it to her."

Luca studied me for several seconds.

Something softened in his eyes.

"You really love that little girl."

"Yes."

"Why?"

The question surprised me.

"Because she's Sophia."

I smiled sadly.

"She doesn't need to be anyone else."

Luca looked away.

I could see his jaw tightening.

Then he whispered, "That's what Isabella used to say."

Before either of us could speak again, Daniel received another call.

He listened carefully.

Then he covered the phone.

"Mr. Moretti, Detective Carter wants to speak with you."

Luca took the phone.

"Detective?"

He listened.

His expression changed.

"Are you certain?"

Another pause.

Then he looked directly at me.

"Thank you for telling us."

He ended the call.

"What happened?" I asked.

Luca slowly set the phone down.

"Eli admitted someone paid him to disable the cameras."

Nora covered her mouth.

"Who?"

"Adrian Vale."

I stepped backward.

Luca continued.

"And Eli says Adrian gave him instructions to place the brooch in the staff laundry room."

I felt my knees weaken.

All the fear and humiliation I'd carried since Sunday suddenly broke through.

I covered my face.

Luca immediately came toward me.

"Claire."

I began crying.

"I thought they were going to take everything from me."

He gently took my hands.

"They won't."

I looked at him.

"How can you be sure?"

His voice became steady.

"Because we're going to tell the truth, and this time we're going to make certain people listen."

Then Daniel's phone rang again.

He answered.

A moment later, his expression darkened.

"Sir."

Luca turned.

"What now?"

"Adrian Vale has disappeared."

"Disappeared?"

"His office is empty."

Daniel swallowed.

"And according to the investigators, someone accessed the original financing documents shortly before he left."

Luca stared at him.

"Does he have them?"

Daniel nodded.

"They believe so."

The room went silent.

May you like

Because even with everything we had discovered, the man who helped create the conspiracy was still carrying evidence that could expose how far it reached.

And nobody knew where he was going.
