Chapter 9 - Eighteen Million Reasons to Lie|

Monday morning arrived beneath a gray Chicago sky.

By eight-thirty, Luca Moretti was standing inside a private conference room at a downtown financial institution.

Evelyn Brooks sat beside him.

Across the table were two bank representatives and an attorney from the institution's compliance department.

I wasn't there.

I learned what happened afterward, when Luca returned to the mansion and told me what he had discovered.

But I still remember exactly how he described that meeting.

Because it was the moment he finally understood why Vanessa had married him.

The bank's attorney opened a thick folder.

"Mr. Moretti, the proposed financing involves an eighteen-million-dollar credit facility for Bellini Holdings."

Luca folded his arms.

"I never approved a loan secured by my daughter's trust."

The attorney nodded.

"That's one of the reasons the transaction was flagged."

He turned several pages.

"The proposed collateral package references interests held by the Sophia Isabella Moretti Trust."

Evelyn leaned forward.

"Those interests are subject to restrictions that cannot be bypassed by a privately signed family declaration."

"Correct," the attorney replied.

Luca stared at the documents.

"What exactly was Bellini Holdings planning to do with eighteen million dollars?"

The bank representative hesitated.

"According to the application, the money would refinance existing obligations and provide operating liquidity."

"Translate that."

Evelyn answered.

"They needed money to pay debts."

The representative nodded.

"Bellini Holdings has experienced substantial financial difficulties."

Luca looked up.

"How substantial?"

The attorney handed him a summary.

Several major investments had failed.

A commercial development had stalled.

There were outstanding creditor claims.

And Richard Bellini, Vanessa's father, faced pressure from lenders who expected repayment.

Luca studied the figures.

"He told me his business was expanding."

"According to these records," Evelyn said, "it was struggling to survive."

The conference room door suddenly opened.

Richard Bellini entered wearing an expensive navy suit.

He had apparently arranged to attend the meeting without realizing Luca would be there.

His expression changed when he saw the documents.

"Luca."

Luca didn't stand.

"Richard."

Richard glanced toward Evelyn.

"I wasn't informed you'd be joining us."

"Neither was I informed you were trying to borrow money against my daughter's inheritance."

Richard forced a laugh.

"You're misunderstanding the arrangement."

"Then explain it."

Richard took a seat.

"We're family now."

Luca stared at him.

"That isn't an explanation."

"Your marriage to Vanessa strengthens our relationship."

"And?"

"This financing would benefit everyone."

"Everyone except Sophia."

Richard waved a hand.

"The child wouldn't lose anything."

Evelyn immediately responded.

"Any transaction putting protected trust assets at risk requires proper authority and compliance with the trust's restrictions."

Richard's smile faded.

"Surely there can be some flexibility."

"Not the kind you're requesting."

He turned toward Luca.

"You're going to let a lawyer ruin a family partnership?"

Luca leaned forward.

"My daughter is nine years old."

Richard looked uncomfortable.

"Yes, of course."

"She spent Saturday night believing I didn't want her anymore."

Richard said nothing.

"Your daughter gave her documents claiming I'd surrendered my parental rights."

"Vanessa must have misunderstood something."

"My signature was forged."

Richard's eyes flickered toward the bank attorney.

Luca continued.

"Her bedroom was emptied."

"That was Vanessa's decision."

"Her school enrollment had been arranged without my knowledge."

Richard swallowed.

"Luca, listen—"

"No."

Luca placed both hands on the table.

"You listen."

The room fell silent.

"You approached me about a business partnership."

Richard nodded slowly.

"You encouraged me to marry your daughter."

"That was a personal matter."

"And now I discover you've been trying to use Isabella's trust to rescue your failing company."

Richard's face reddened.

"You're making accusations you cannot prove."

Luca slid the questionable authorization across the table.

"Then explain why your attorney submitted this."

Richard stared at the signature.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he looked toward Evelyn.

"Adrian handled the paperwork."

"Did he act under your instructions?" she asked.

Richard leaned back.

"I'll have my lawyer answer that."

Luca nodded.

"Good."

He stood.

"Because my lawyers will have questions, too."

The bank attorney confirmed that no funds had been released and that the proposed transaction would remain blocked pending the ongoing review and legal process.

Evelyn then informed Richard that the disputed authorizations had been referred to investigators.

Richard abruptly stood.

"You're making a tremendous mistake."

Luca looked at him.

"My mistake was trusting your family."

Richard moved toward the door.

Then he stopped.

"You know what people say about you, Luca."

Luca remained silent.

"They say you control half the city through fear."

Richard's voice dropped.

"Do you really want those people examining your finances?"

The threat was unmistakable.

Luca had spent much of his adult life operating in a world where loyalty was purchased with influence and silence.

He understood exactly what Richard was suggesting.

If he pursued the fraud investigation, uncomfortable questions might be asked about his own business history.

For a moment, the room became painfully quiet.

Then Luca said something Richard clearly hadn't expected.

"If protecting my daughter means answering questions about my own decisions, I'll answer them."

Richard stared at him.

Luca continued.

"I won't sacrifice her future to keep my reputation comfortable."

Richard left without another word.

Later that morning, Luca returned home.

I was helping Sophia put together a puzzle in the library when he entered.

She immediately ran toward him.

"Daddy!"

He lifted her into his arms.

"Hello, princess."

"Did you save Mommy's money?"

He smiled sadly.

"The bank didn't give it away."

Sophia hugged him.

"Good."

Luca looked at me.

"Claire, may I speak with you?"

I followed him into the hallway.

He looked exhausted.

"Vanessa and her attorney are being investigated."

I nodded.

"And I've asked Evelyn to begin the process of ending the marriage."

For a moment, I didn't know what to say.

"Mr. Moretti, are you sure?"

He glanced toward the library.

Sophia was humming as she worked on her puzzle.

"She tried to erase my daughter from my life."

His voice broke.

"There's nothing left to save in that marriage."

I touched his arm.

For one brief moment, he covered my hand with his.

Then Daniel hurried toward us.

"Sir, we have a problem."

Luca turned.

"What?"

"Detective Naomi Carter is downstairs."

"About the financial documents?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No, sir."

He looked at me.

"She's here about Vanessa's missing diamond brooch."

My stomach twisted.

Daniel continued.

"Someone claims to have found it."

Luca's eyes narrowed.

"Where?"

Daniel hesitated.

"In a laundry bag assigned to Claire."

The hallway seemed to tilt beneath my feet.

I looked at Luca.

"Mr. Moretti, I swear I didn't—"

He interrupted gently.

"I believe you."

But Daniel wasn't finished.

"Detective Carter says Vanessa has provided a written statement accusing Claire of theft."

May you like

Then he lowered his voice.

"And she's asking the police to remove Claire from the property immediately."
