Chapter 11 - Healing the Wounds

|

Two weeks passed, and a profound transformation swept through the Moretti estate like a breath of fresh spring air.

Every single trace of Vanessa’s existence was systematically removed from the mansion.

Her designer clothes, expensive perfumes, and gaudy portraits were packed into boxes and donated or destroyed.

The oppressive atmosphere of fear and silence was replaced by the warm aroma of garlic, basil, and roasting meats.

Frank had taken over the estate’s grand commercial kitchen, refusing to let the private chefs do all the work.

“A kitchen without love is just a cold factory, Claire!” Frank declared happily, stirring a massive pot of tomato sauce.

His hands were completely steady now, moving with the deft rhythm of a master chef who had spent decades at the stove.

I stood beside him, chopping fresh rosemary and laughing at his animated Italian stories.

“You have the touch, Claire,” Frank said, testing a spoonful of sauce and nodding with deep approval.

“Luca has been eating takeout and cold salads for six months because of that woman,” Frank grumbled affectionately.

“Tonight, we feed him like a king in his own home,” Frank added with a wink.

Just then, Luca walked into the kitchen, wearing a simple black cashmere sweater and dark slacks instead of his usual armored suits.

The hard, ruthless lines on his handsome face had softened dramatically over the past fourteen days.

When he saw his father standing proudly by the stove, Luca’s eyes lit up with genuine happiness.

“Dad, the doctors told you to take it easy on your feet,” Luca scolded gently, though a smile gave him away.

Frank waved a wooden spoon at his son in mock defiance.

“Doctors know about pills, Luca! I know about pasta!” Frank retorted, making all three of us burst into laughter.

Luca walked over to the kitchen island, leaning against the marble counter and watching me closely.

There was an intensity in his dark eyes that made my heart flutter in my chest, a sensation I fought hard to hide.

“Claire, could you join me in the study for a moment?” Luca asked, his voice low and respectful.

“Of course, Mr. Moretti,” I replied, wiping my hands on a clean kitchen towel.

Frank gave me an encouraging nod behind Luca’s back, his eyes twinkling with secret delight.

I followed Luca down the quiet wood-paneled hallway into his private study.

On his desk lay a sleek blue leather portfolio bearing my legal name in embossed gold letters.

“Please, sit down, Claire,” Luca said softly, pulling out a comfortable leather armchair for me.

I sat down, feeling a sudden flutter of nervousness about what this formal meeting meant.

Luca sat opposite me, leaning forward with his hands clasped together on the desk.

“Two weeks ago, I told you that you were no longer a maid in this house,” Luca began with earnest sincerity.

“I meant every single word,” he stated with profound gravity.

Luca opened the portfolio, sliding three documents across the polished desk toward me.

“This is the deed to your mother’s house in Lincoln Park, completely paid off with the mortgage canceled,” Luca explained.

My hand flew to my mouth in shock, tears instantly welling in my eyes.

My mother had been facing foreclosure for two years, and the fear had kept me awake for countless nights.

“And these second documents,” Luca continued gently, “establish you as the Executive Director of the Moretti Family Foundation.”

“You will manage our philanthropic initiatives, community kitchens, and youth centers across Chicago with full executive authority.”

“Luca... this is too much,” I whispered, overwhelmed by the magnitude of his generosity.

Luca reached across the desk, gently placing his hand over mine.

“Claire, you saved my father from being locked away and you saved me from a poisoned grave,” Luca said, his voice shaking with raw emotion.

“There is no price in this world that can ever repay what you gave back to my family.”
