Chapter 13 - The Daughter Who Turned Against Her Father|

Vanessa Bellini had spent her entire life believing that loyalty meant protecting her father.
Now she sat across from a federal investigator, preparing to help put him in prison.
I almost didn't recognize her.
She wore plain black pants and a gray sweater.
Her wedding ring was gone.
Her eyes were swollen from crying.
But for the first time, she wasn't making excuses.
Maya placed a recorder on the table.
“Vanessa, before we proceed, I need you to understand that cooperating doesn't automatically protect you from prosecution.”
Vanessa nodded.
“I understand.”
“You threatened Margaret Keene.”
“Yes.”
“You concealed information about Dominic Moretti.”
“Yes.”
“And you helped your father maintain access to a facility where Dominic was being held under a false identity.”
Vanessa lowered her head.
“Yes.”
Luca stood near the window.
He hadn't spoken to his wife since she arrived.
Their wedding had taken place only days earlier.
But the marriage already seemed like something from another lifetime.
Maya continued.
“Why are you cooperating now?”
Vanessa looked toward Luca.
Then at me.
“Because I spent my life calling people cruel when they embarrassed me.”
Her voice cracked.
“But I never questioned the cruelty that paid for my clothes, my house, and my wedding.”
She wiped her eyes.
“I saw Margaret standing there in the rain.”
“And instead of asking whether she needed help, I thought about what my guests would think.”
I remembered the exact moment.
Her diamond-covered gown.
Her raised hand.
Her furious expression as she ordered security to remove an elderly woman.
Vanessa looked directly at me.
“Claire, I know I don't deserve your forgiveness.”
I didn't answer.
She continued.
“But I need you to know that I was wrong.”
I took a breath.
“You were.”
Her tears fell.
“I'm sorry.”
I looked at her for a long moment.
“An apology doesn't undo what happened.”
“I know.”
“But if you're serious about changing, help us stop your father.”
Vanessa nodded.
“I will.”
Later that afternoon, Maya received confirmation that Graham Pike had been detained while attempting to leave Illinois.
Investigators had also secured additional financial records linking Victor's companies to fraudulent property transfers and payments made to corrupt officials.
The evidence was growing.
So were the consequences.
Luca had already begun cooperating with investigators about his own businesses.
Some of his employees were under investigation.
Others were frightened.
Several had resigned.
His reputation as Chicago's untouchable Mafia boss was collapsing.
And he was letting it happen.
I found him sitting alone outside Dominic's hospital room.
He was holding an old photograph.
It showed him as a boy sitting on his father's shoulders.
“Are you okay?” I asked.
He gave a tired smile.
“That's becoming a difficult question.”
I sat beside him.
He looked at the photograph.
“I thought power meant nobody could take anything from you.”
“Victor took thirty years from my father.”
“He took Leonard Price from his daughter.”
“And he nearly took your mother.”
Luca swallowed.
“All my money couldn't undo any of it.”
I touched his arm.
“It can help repair some of the damage.”
He nodded.
“That's what I'm going to try to do.”
A quiet voice came from behind us.
“Luca?”
Dominic stood in the doorway with a nurse beside him.
He was using a walker.
His recovery would be slow.
Years of unnecessary confinement and inappropriate medication had weakened him.
But he was standing.
Luca hurried toward him.
“Dad, you should be resting.”
Dominic smiled faintly.
“I've rested enough for thirty years.”
Luca laughed through his tears.
His father reached toward him.
“I heard about the restaurant.”
Luca's smile disappeared.
“I'm sorry.”
Dominic shook his head.
“You don't need to apologize for what Victor destroyed.”
Then he took a breath.
“But we do owe other people apologies for what we helped build.”
Luca nodded.
“I know.”
Dominic looked toward me.
“Have they found Leonard's daughter?”
I answered quietly.
“Yes.”
“Rachel Price lives in Milwaukee.”
“She has two children.”
“Investigators contacted her this morning.”
Dominic closed his eyes.
“Does she know?”
“She's been told the remains buried under your name may be her father's.”
He began crying.
“I need to speak to her.”
Luca took his hand.
“When you're stronger.”
Dominic nodded.
“I owe her the truth.”
A few hours later, Rachel agreed to a supervised conversation.
She arrived at the hospital wearing a navy coat and carrying a photograph of her father.
She was in her late thirties.
Her hands trembled as she entered.
Dominic looked at her.
“Rachel?”
She nodded.
He started crying.
“I remember you when you were little.”
Rachel didn't smile.
“My mother died believing my father had abandoned us that night.”
Dominic covered his mouth.
“I'm sorry.”
She looked at him for a long time.
“Did you know my father was in danger?”
Dominic nodded.
“Yes.”
“And you didn't save him?”
His voice broke.
“I tried too late.”
Rachel's eyes filled.
“I don't know if I can forgive you.”
Dominic lowered his head.
“You don't have to.”
The room went silent.
Then he said something I knew had cost him everything.
“But I will spend whatever time I have left making sure the world knows your father was not the man who abandoned his family.”
Rachel began crying.
Luca quietly arranged for Leonard's surviving family to have access to legal representation and restitution resources.
He didn't ask for gratitude.
He didn't ask for forgiveness.
For once, he simply did what needed to be done.
That evening, Vanessa agreed to help Maya arrange a controlled meeting with Victor at Pier Nine.
Agents prepared surveillance positions.
Vanessa would wear a concealed recording device.
Victor had instructed her to bring documents and cash.
Instead, she would bring evidence of his crimes to people who could arrest him.
Before leaving, she approached Luca.
“I know our marriage is over.”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
“I really did love you.”
Luca looked at her sadly.
“Maybe you loved the life you thought we could have.”
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“Maybe.”
Then she whispered something that surprised me.
“Claire loves people when they have nothing to give her.”
I felt my face warm.
Luca didn't respond.
Vanessa turned toward the door.
“I wish I'd learned how to do that sooner.”
By eleven that night, she was approaching Pier Nine.
Maya's team monitored her from nearby vehicles.
Luca and I waited at the operations area several streets away.
The radio crackled.
Vanessa had reached the waterfront.
Then her voice came through.
“Dad?”
A man answered from the darkness.
“My beautiful girl.”
Victor Bellini stepped beneath a dockside light.
He embraced his daughter.
For several seconds, everything seemed calm.
Then his expression changed.
He looked toward the black van parked across the street.
Slowly, he reached beneath his coat.
Maya's voice came sharply through the radio.
“Everyone hold.”
Victor leaned toward Vanessa.
Then we heard him whisper something that froze the blood in my veins.
“You brought them here.”
Vanessa began crying.
“Dad, please.”
A metallic click sounded through the microphone.
Victor had drawn a gun.
May you like
And suddenly, his voice thundered across the radio.
“If Luca Moretti wants his revenge, tell him to come take it from me!”
