Chapter 7 - The Man Behind the Locked Door|

We reached Northlake Residence shortly after sunset.
The building stood behind tall iron gates on a quiet road outside Chicago.
Its white stone walls, trimmed hedges, and welcoming entrance made it look like an expensive retirement community.
There was nothing about the place that suggested someone had been imprisoned inside for thirty years.
That frightened me more than a building covered in barbed wire ever could.
Maya had obtained an emergency search warrant supported by the records, witness statements, and recording.
Federal agents approached the main entrance while local officers secured the road.
Luca wanted to accompany them.
Maya refused.
“You stay here until the building is secure.”
“That's my father.”
“And I intend to bring him out alive.”
Luca stared at her.
Then he stepped back.
I stood beside him near the staging area.
Margaret was resting in Tomas's vehicle under a blanket.
The old woman had insisted on coming, but she was exhausted.
My mother remained in the protected apartment.
For the first time in days, I knew exactly where she was.
Maya entered Northlake with her team.
Through the glass doors, we could see employees gathering in the lobby.
Some looked confused.
Others looked frightened.
Then a man in a white coat appeared.
Dr. Adrian Vale.
Even from a distance, I recognized him from the photographs in the medical files.
He spoke rapidly to Maya.
She showed him the warrant.
He shook his head.
A security guard moved toward the rear hallway.
Two agents followed.
Luca began pacing.
“Something's wrong.”
Tomas watched the entrance.
“Give them room to work.”
Minutes passed.
Then Maya called Luca.
Her voice was tight.
“The room assigned to Daniel March is empty.”
Luca stopped walking.
“What?”
“His bed is made.”
“His chart says he was transferred this afternoon.”
“He wasn't,” Luca said.
“We checked the vehicle records.”
“Someone is lying.”
Maya lowered her voice.
“We're searching the facility.”
The call ended.
Luca stared toward the building.
I could see his hope slipping away.
“Claire, what if we're too late?”
I took his hand.
“We haven't heard that he's gone.”
He looked at our joined hands.
For a second, he seemed surprised that I was touching him.
Then his fingers closed around mine.
Inside the building, an alarm began sounding.
Agents appeared near the side entrance.
A staff member had attempted to destroy patient files.
He was stopped before he could finish.
Then a young woman in blue scrubs ran toward Maya.
I recognized her from Rosa's description.
Nina Brooks.
She pointed toward the oldest wing of the facility.
A moment later, Maya called again.
“We found another locked section.”
Luca moved toward the entrance.
“Tomas, stay with Margaret.”
He looked at me.
“Claire, wait here.”
I knew he was afraid of what he might find.
But I also knew he couldn't face it alone.
“I'm coming.”
He looked ready to argue.
Then Maya appeared at the doorway.
“Mr. Moretti, you may come to the secured corridor.”
“One civilian witness can accompany you.”
Luca immediately looked at me.
I nodded.
We followed Maya through a long hallway smelling of antiseptic.
Our footsteps echoed against polished floors.
At the end stood a locked double door.
An agent opened it.
Beyond was a smaller corridor with six private rooms.
Most were empty.
But through the glass window of the last room, I saw an elderly man sitting in a wheelchair.
White hair.
Thin shoulders.
A faded blue sweater.
My breath caught.
“Luca.”
He looked past me.
Then he stopped.
For several seconds, he couldn't move.
The old man was staring at a window.
His hands rested motionlessly in his lap.
Luca stepped toward the doorway.
“Dad?”
There was no response.
His voice broke.
“Dad, it's Luca.”
The elderly man slowly turned his head.
He looked confused.
Almost frightened.
“Who?”
Luca moved closer.
“It's me.”
“Your son.”
The old man's lips trembled.
“My son?”
Luca knelt in front of the wheelchair.
“I'm here.”
The man stared at his face.
Then his trembling fingers reached toward Luca's eyebrow.
He touched the small scar above it.
And suddenly, his eyes filled with tears.
“Little Wolf?”
Luca made a sound I will remember for the rest of my life.
It wasn't a word.
It was the broken cry of a child who had finally found his way home.
He wrapped his arms around his father.
Dominic began sobbing.
“My boy.”
“My beautiful boy.”
“I looked for you.”
Luca pressed his face against his father's shoulder.
“I thought you were dead.”
Dominic held him tighter.
“They told me you were gone.”
His voice shook violently.
“They said you died when you were twelve.”
Luca pulled back.
“What?”
Dominic began crying harder.
“They showed me a newspaper.”
“They said there had been a car accident.”
I covered my mouth.
Victor had done more than separate a father and son.
He had made each believe the other was dead.
Maya turned away briefly, giving them privacy.
A medical team approached to examine Dominic.
He was weak and dehydrated, but conscious.
Nina explained that his medication had recently been increased without clear justification.
The medical team arranged his immediate transfer to a hospital.
Margaret was brought into the secured corridor after the agents confirmed the area was safe.
When Dominic saw her, his entire face changed.
“Maggie?”
She began crying.
“I'm here, Dom.”
He reached for her hand.
“You kept your promise.”
She shook her head.
“I should have come sooner.”
He squeezed her fingers.
“You came.”
Luca stood beside them, his eyes red.
For the first time since the wedding, he looked almost peaceful.
Then Dominic noticed the child's drawing in his son's hand.
He stared at the little gray wolf.
“Where did you find that?”
“In your old room.”
Dominic's expression changed.
Fear replaced recognition.
He gripped Luca's wrist.
“Listen to me.”
“Victor will tell you I'm a victim.”
Luca frowned.
“You are.”
Dominic shook his head.
“No.”
Tears rolled down his cheeks.
“There was another man in that warehouse.”
“His name was Leonard Price.”
Luca went still.
Dominic whispered the confession that shattered the fragile peace.
May you like
“Leonard died because I trusted Victor.”
“And the worst part is that I knew Victor was planning something terrible.”
