Chapter 15 - The Queen of Chicago

|

One year later, the Moretti estate was bathed in golden fairy lights, hosting the grandest celebration in the city’s history.

Over five hundred elite guests filled the grand ballroom, including politicians, federal judges, foreign dignitaries, and family dons.

They had all gathered to celebrate the eighty-third birthday of Rosa Moretti and the extraordinary success of her charitable foundation.

I stood near the grand champagne fountain, wearing an elegant navy silk evening gown, holding a clipboard of event schedules.

My life had completely transformed over the past twelve months beyond my wildest childhood dreams.

I was no longer scrubbing floors; I managed a multi-million-dollar philanthropic empire that provided shelters for abused elderly women across the country.

My younger brother’s college tuition had been paid in full by Luca, and my parents lived in a beautiful home protected by Moretti security.

Suddenly, the grand orchestra silenced its instruments, and the master of ceremonies stepped up to the microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen, please rise for the Matriarch of Chicago, Mrs. Rosa Moretti, accompanied by Don Luca Moretti!"

The entire ballroom rose to their feet in unison, erupting into thunderous, respectful applause.

The double mahogany doors swung open, and Rosa walked in, looking breathtakingly regal in a custom emerald-velvet gown.

Around her neck hung a modest, radiant diamond necklace, but the brightest thing about her was the joyful smile on her face.

Her hands, once cracked and bleeding from harsh bleach, were now smooth, adorned with her late husband’s restored gold band.

Luca walked beside her, his arm linked gently through hers, looking out at the crowd with immense pride and quiet satisfaction.

He guided his mother to the central table on the elevated platform, pulling out her chair like a humble, devoted servant.

Luca then took the microphone from the podium, his powerful presence commanding absolute silence across the vast room.

"One year ago, my family faced its darkest hour," Luca said, his voice ringing clear and strong through the speakers.

"I learned the hard way that an empire built on fear and cold ambitions means nothing if you forget who built the foundation."

"My mother raised me alone in a cold, one-bedroom apartment on the South Side, skipping meals so I could eat warm bread."

"She scrubbed floors for thirty years so I could stand tall in this city."

"True power is not measured by the number of men who fear you or the millions of dollars in your bank accounts."

"True power is having the humility to protect, cherish, and honor the mother who gave you life."

Luca turned toward me, extending his hand warmly from the stage.

"And true strength is found in people like Claire, who showed courage when everyone else chose cowardice."

The crowd applauded enthusiastically, and Rosa waved for me to come join them on the stage.

I walked up, taking Rosa’s soft, warm hand in mine, feeling an overwhelming surge of love and belonging.

Luca raised his crystal glass of champagne high into the air, looking out over the sea of powerful men and women bowing their heads.

"To the true Queen of Chicago," Luca toasted, his eyes shining with pride.

"To my mother, Rosa Moretti!"

"To the Queen!" five hundred voices roared in unison, their glasses clinking together in a massive celebration of honor and loyalty.

Rosa leaned against my arm, looked at her devoted son, and whispered softly into my ear with a peaceful, triumphant smile.

"You see, Claire, evil may have its season, but love and loyalty will always rule the house."

And as the orchestra played a beautiful Italian waltz, Rosa danced in the arms of her son, surrounded by absolute love, respect, and peace.
