Chapter 3 - The Broken Mask

|

Upstairs in the safety of the master bedroom, the air was warm, but Rosa’s hands remained as cold as winter marble.

I gently helped her sit on the edge of the velvet armchair and knelt before her with a bowl of warm, soapy water.

Her knees were badly bruised, purple and yellow from kneeling for hours on the merciless stone floor.

The harsh chemical detergent Vanessa had forced her to use had cracked the delicate skin across her knuckles.

"It hurts, Claire," Rosa whispered, tears slipping silently down the deep lines etched into her face.

"I know, Mrs. Rosa," I murmured, using a soft cotton cloth to clean her wounds as gently as possible.

"You are safe now, and Luca knows the truth."

She gripped my wrist with surprising strength, her cloudy hazel eyes filled with maternal desperation.

"He is in terrible danger, child."

"Salvatore Falcone didn't just come to reclaim power; he came for blood."

"He made Vanessa swear to open the service entrance when the midnight delivery truck arrives."

Meanwhile, three floors beneath us, a very different kind of reckoning was unfolding in Luca’s private soundproof study.

Luca sat behind his massive mahogany desk, his tailored jacket discarded and his dress shirt sleeves rolled to his forearms.

Vanessa sat strapped into a heavy wooden chair across from him, stripped of her diamond necklace and designer earrings.

On the desk between them lay her seized smartphone, which Luca’s technical specialists had just cracked wide open.

"Do you want to explain these encrypted messages to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands?" Luca asked coldly.

Vanessa bowed her head, her shoulders shaking with hysterical, uneven sobs.

"He blackmailed me, Luca!" she screamed, trying to sound like a helpless victim caught in a crossfire.

"Salvatore showed up at my salon three weeks ago and threatened to butcher my younger brother if I didn't cooperate!"

"I only told your mother to clean the shoes so she would stay downstairs and out of sight!"

Luca leaned forward, planting both palms flat on the wood until his face was only inches from hers.

"You told Salvatore in this text that you would ensure the security codes were disabled by eleven-forty-five tonight."

"You also promised him that you would put sleeping pills in my mother's nightly tea so she wouldn't make a sound."

Vanessa’s jaw dropped, her face turning the color of wet chalk as her final lie dissolved into thin air.

"Luca, please, we took vows before God!" she shrieked, thrashing against the leather straps holding her down.

"I am your wife!"

"You are a parasite who mistook my patience for weakness," Luca said in a tone that made her blood run cold.

He pulled a silver fountain pen from his breast pocket and dialed a direct number on the desk speakerphone.

The line clicked, and the raspy voice of Don Antonio Bellini, Vanessa’s powerful father, echoed through the quiet room.

"Luca?" the older mob patriarch answered cautiously.

"Antonio," Luca said without a hint of warmth.

"Your daughter has fifteen minutes to live unless you tell me exactly how much you knew about Salvatore Falcone's resurrection."

A heavy gasp came through the speaker, followed by absolute, horrified silence.
