Chapter 11 - The Promise He Made at His Sister's Grave|

Luca didn't speak for several minutes.
He sat in Father Thomas's office staring at Isabella's statement.
I watched him carefully.
His hands were clenched.
His shoulders rigid.
The dark tattoos across his fingers seemed almost motionless against the white paper.
Then he slowly stood.
"Father."
The priest looked up.
"Yes?"
"Thank you for keeping this safe."
Father Thomas nodded.
"Your sister wanted Lily protected."
Luca swallowed.
"I know."
He turned toward me.
"Rebecca, I need to go somewhere."
I stood.
"Of course."
He hesitated.
"Would you come with me?"
I nodded.
"Yes."
We drove to a cemetery on the edge of Chicago.
The afternoon sky was gray.
A cold wind moved through the trees.
Luca walked between the rows of headstones until he reached a grave beneath a flowering tree.
I stopped several feet away.
The stone bore Isabella's name.
ISABELLA MORETTI WHITMORE
Beloved mother.
Cherished sister.
A life remembered in love.
Luca knelt.
For a long time, he said nothing.
Then he placed his hand against the stone.
"I'm sorry, Bella."
My throat tightened.
He closed his eyes.
"I thought I was protecting you."
The wind moved through the branches.
He continued.
"I thought if I handled the family business, you'd never have to worry about the people involved."
His voice broke.
"But you were afraid. And I didn't know."
I looked away.
Some grief was too private to witness directly.
Then Luca spoke again.
"I promised you I'd take care of Lily."
He swallowed.
"And I nearly married a woman who wanted to send her away."
Tears filled my eyes.
He lowered his head.
For the first time since I'd known him, I saw Luca Moretti cry openly.
Not from anger.
Not from humiliation.
From the unbearable realization that someone he loved had carried fear alone.
I waited.
When he finally stood, his face looked different.
Not less powerful.
But more human.
He approached me.
"Rebecca."
"Yes?"
"I owe you an apology."
I shook my head.
"Mr. Moretti—"
"Please."
I stopped.
He looked directly at me.
"You told the truth when you could have lost your job. You helped Lily while everyone else watched. And I allowed Vanessa to make you afraid of speaking."
My eyes filled.
"I knew she could fire me."
He nodded.
"That's the part I cannot forgive myself for."
I swallowed.
He continued.
"You should never have had to risk your livelihood to protect a child in my home."
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he asked quietly, "Would you consider helping us in another capacity?"
I frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"Lily needs people who understand how she communicates. People who respect her choices."
I nodded.
"Of course."
"I'd like to offer you a position coordinating her daily support and helping us work with her teachers and specialists."
My heart began pounding.
"Mr. Moretti, I'm not an audiologist."
"I know."
"Or a teacher."
"I know."
He smiled faintly.
"But you listen to her."
I looked down.
He continued.
"We'll involve qualified professionals. I'm not asking you to replace them."
His voice softened.
"I'm asking whether you'd consider becoming part of the team that helps Lily feel secure."
My throat tightened.
"I'd like that."
He nodded.
"Good."
Then I hesitated.
"On one condition."
His eyebrows rose.
"Name it."
"Lily gets to decide whether she wants me involved."
Luca smiled.
"Absolutely."
We stood beside Isabella's grave for another moment.
Then his phone rang.
Daniel.
Luca answered.
His expression changed almost immediately.
"What?"
A pause.
Then his jaw tightened.
"When?"
He listened.
Then looked toward me.
"Rebecca, we need to go."
My stomach dropped.
"What's wrong?"
"Antonio's attorney contacted Sarah Mitchell."
I frowned.
"About what?"
Luca swallowed.
"He's filed a petition challenging my guardianship."
I felt cold.
"He can't just take Lily."
"No."
Luca's face hardened.
"But he's trying to make the court believe I am unfit to care for her."
My heart hammered.
"How?"
Luca looked toward his sister's grave.
Then answered quietly.
"He's using my criminal reputation."
For the first time, I understood the full danger of the life Luca had built.

The same fear that made powerful men obey him could now be used against him.
And the little girl he loved most might pay the price.
