Chapter 12 - The Girl Who Finally Spoke for Herself|

The guardianship hearing took place three weeks later.

By then, Luca had hired independent counsel, disclosed the relevant financial records, and cooperated with investigators examining Antonio's business dealings.

Vanessa had been questioned about the forged school paperwork.

Antonio had temporarily stepped away from several companies while financial records were reviewed.

Nothing had been decided yet.

But the atmosphere around the Moretti mansion had changed.

Luca no longer trusted family loyalty as a substitute for evidence.

Every document was reviewed.

Every account connected to Lily's trust was independently audited.

And every decision involving her education or medical care was discussed with qualified professionals and, whenever appropriate, Lily herself.

That morning, Lily wore a pale-blue dress.

Her favorite.

I helped her adjust the collar.

Then asked whether her hearing aid felt comfortable.

She nodded.

"Yes."

I smiled.

"Good."

She looked toward me.

"Miss Rebecca?"

"Yes?"

"Do I have to talk in front of everyone?"

I crouched beside her.

"Your attorney and the judge will explain what choices you have. You can ask for communication support and tell them if you don't understand something."

Lily looked worried.

"What if I say something wrong?"

My heart tightened.

"You're not taking a test."

She looked down.

I gently signed.

Your feelings matter.

She nodded slowly.

Then whispered, "What if Uncle Luca gets angry?"

I shook my head.

"He wants you to tell the truth."

She looked up.

"Even if I say I was scared of him sometimes?"

I paused.

Then answered honestly.

"Even then."

Her eyes filled.

I continued.

"People who love you should be willing to hear when something hurts or frightens you."

She studied me.

Then smiled faintly.

"Okay."

At the courthouse, Luca met us near the entrance.

He wore a dark suit.

His hair was neatly styled.

The tattoos across his neck were visible above his collar.

But his expression softened immediately when he saw Lily.

"Hey, sweetheart."

She ran toward him.

He crouched and hugged her.

"Ready?"

She nodded.

Then signed.

A little scared.

Luca signed back.

Me too.

Lily laughed.

I smiled.

For the first time, he wasn't pretending to be fearless.

He was showing her that fear could exist alongside courage.

Inside, the hearing focused on whether Antonio's petition established any grounds to change Lily's guardianship.

Antonio's attorney argued that Luca's reputation and business associations raised concerns.

Luca's attorney acknowledged those concerns needed to be considered seriously.

She presented evidence of the steps Luca had taken to separate himself from questionable operations, strengthen oversight, and protect Lily's interests.

She also presented the disputed school documents.

The false statements.

The unauthorized financial requests.

And the evidence that Antonio had participated in arrangements designed to gain control over money held for Lily.

I watched Antonio's face change as the documents were discussed.

He looked furious.

Vanessa was not present.

Her attorney had advised her against attending.

Eleanor sat quietly beside me.

Her hands were clasped together.

During a break, she looked toward Lily.

Then signed a simple greeting she'd been practicing.

Hello, sweetheart.

Lily smiled.

Hi, Grandma.

Eleanor began crying.

I handed her a tissue.

She whispered, "I've waited eleven years to hear her call me that."

My eyes filled.

Later, Lily met privately with the judge and a qualified communication professional so she could express her wishes without the pressure of speaking before a crowded courtroom.

I waited outside.

Luca paced the hallway.

For nearly half an hour, he barely spoke.

Then Lily emerged.

She looked tired.

But calm.

She walked directly toward Luca.

He crouched.

"How was it?"

She nodded.

"Okay."

He smiled.

"Good."

Then she wrapped her arms around him.

"I told the truth."

His eyes filled.

"That's all I wanted."

The judge issued an interim order maintaining Lily's current placement while requiring additional safeguards and oversight.

Antonio's immediate request to remove her from Luca's care was denied.

A fuller review would follow.

For the first time in weeks, I could breathe.

Outside the courthouse, Luca looked toward Eleanor.

"I'd like Lily to spend more time with you, if she's comfortable."

The old woman's eyes filled.

"Really?"

He nodded.

"You are her grandmother."

Eleanor began crying.

Lily smiled.

Then signed.

Can Grandma come to my birthday?

Luca laughed through tears.

"Of course."

I watched them.

A little girl.

Her uncle.

Her grandmother.

Three people learning that family wasn't about controlling one another.

It was about making room.

But the greatest surprise came later that evening.

Lily approached Luca in the library.

I sat nearby, helping her organize photographs of Isabella.

She looked at her uncle.

Then signed carefully.

I want to tell you something.

Luca turned toward her.

I'm listening.

Her eyes filled.

When Vanessa took my hearing aid, I thought you would believe her.

Luca went still.

Lily continued.

I thought you would be angry because she said I was difficult.

Tears appeared in his eyes.

He crouched beside her.

"Sweetheart..."

She shook her head gently.

Please let me finish.

Luca immediately stopped.

He nodded.

Go ahead.

Lily swallowed.

I need you to listen to me even when someone important says I'm wrong.

For several seconds, Luca couldn't speak.

Then he signed slowly.

I promise to listen.

Lily stared at him.

Always?

He nodded.

Always.

She threw her arms around him.

And I turned away because my own tears were falling.

That night, after Lily went to bed, Luca found me in the kitchen.

He stood beside the counter.

"Rebecca."

I looked up.

"Yes?"

"She told me something today that I should have understood years ago."

I waited.

He swallowed.

"She wasn't afraid of losing her hearing aid."

My heart tightened.

"She was afraid of losing her voice in this family."

I nodded.

"Yes."

May you like

Luca looked down.

Then whispered, "Thank you for helping me hear her."
