Chapter 3 - The Van at the Gate|

At 11:52 p.m., a white passenger van stopped outside the iron gates of the Moretti mansion.

I watched from an upstairs window as its headlights illuminated the stone lions guarding the entrance.

Two people stepped out.

One carried a clipboard.

The other wore dark medical scrubs and held a folded wheelchair near the rear doors.

I felt sick.

Benjamin was asleep in the next room, finally resting after his pediatrician examined him and confirmed that he needed food, fluids, and careful follow-up.

He had eaten two sandwiches, half a bowl of soup, and a small piece of chocolate cake before falling asleep.

Now strangers had arrived to take him away.

Luca stood beside Marco in the security room, watching the gate camera.

"Did you tell them the transfer was canceled?" he asked.

"Three times," Marco answered.

"Then why are they here?"

Marco pressed the intercom button.

"This is private property, and there is no authorized pickup."

The woman holding the clipboard stepped closer.

"We have legal documentation requiring the immediate transportation of Benjamin Moretti."

Luca took the microphone.

"This is Benjamin's father."

"Mr. Moretti, we're acting under an authorization signed by your family representative."

"That document is fraudulent."

The woman glanced toward her companion.

"Sir, you'll need to resolve that with the admissions office."

"Then nobody enters this property until the police verify those documents."

I had expected Luca to threaten the visitors.

Instead, he called the detective who had taken his earlier report.

It surprised me how carefully he controlled his anger.

He knew that one reckless decision could make matters worse for Benjamin.

While we waited, Rosa came downstairs wearing a wool robe over her nightdress.

"Is that the van?"

I nodded.

She gripped the railing.

"I thought we had stopped them."

"So did I."

Luca asked Marco to photograph the visitors' identification and any documents they were willing to provide.

The woman eventually slid a sealed packet through a secure delivery slot beside the gate.

Inside was a transportation order supposedly approved by Luca's office.

The accompanying invoice listed a company called Hale Family Services.

Luca stared at the name.

"Vanessa's maiden name is Hale."

Marco checked the company's registration on his tablet.

"It's owned by Grant Hale."

"Her brother?"

"Yes, boss."

I remembered Grant immediately.

He had attended Luca and Vanessa's wedding four months earlier, wearing a white tuxedo jacket and laughing too loudly during the speeches.

He had also visited the mansion several times afterward.

Every visit ended with Vanessa closing the study doors and telling me not to interrupt.

Once, I had heard Grant complain about money.

I had assumed he was talking about an unsuccessful business investment.

Now I wasn't so sure.

Detective Hannah Brooks arrived with another officer shortly after midnight.

She spoke to the transport workers before coming inside.

"The driver says he was hired by Hale Family Services," she explained.

"He believes this is an authorized medical transportation job."

Luca handed her the original documents Rosa had found.

"These signatures aren't mine."

"We'll examine the originals and contact the people who prepared them."

"Can you arrest Vanessa?"

"Not simply because you suspect her, Mr. Moretti."

Detective Brooks was calm but firm.

"We need evidence establishing the offenses, and your son needs to be safe while we investigate."

Luca nodded.

"Then tell me what you need."

I could see that answer surprised her.

Perhaps she had expected the infamous Luca Moretti to make demands instead of offering cooperation.

The transport workers were told that no transfer could proceed, and the van eventually drove away.

But the danger didn't feel finished.

It felt closer.

Around one in the morning, I went upstairs to check on Benjamin.

His bedroom was decorated with model airplanes, baseball photographs, and glow-in-the-dark stars.

He was sitting upright in bed, holding a stuffed gray elephant.

"Claire?"

"I'm here, sweetheart."

"Did they come?"

My heart sank.

"Who?"

"The people with the van."

I sat beside him.

"How did you know about them?"

His eyes filled with tears.

"Vanessa said they would come when I was sleeping."

I tried to keep my voice steady.

"Did she tell you anything else?"

He nodded.

"She said I shouldn't fight because they give medicine to boys who make trouble."

A cold feeling spread through my chest.

"Benjamin, did anyone ever take you to that place before?"

"No."

"Did anyone from there talk to you?"

He thought for a moment.

"There was a lady on Vanessa's phone."

"What did she say?"

"She asked if I got angry and broke things."

"And what did you tell her?"

"I said I broke my toy airplane when I dropped it."

His hands tightened around the elephant.

"Vanessa said that counted."

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I took his hand.

"Accidents don't make you dangerous, sweetheart."

Benjamin moved closer.

"Can you stay until I fall asleep?"

"Of course."

He rested his head against my arm.

For several minutes, we listened to the rain tapping against his window.

Then he whispered, "Do you think my real mommy would be disappointed in me?"

I swallowed hard.

"No, Benjamin."

"How do you know?"

"Because mothers who love their children don't stop loving them when they have a hard day."

He closed his eyes.

"Vanessa said Mommy went away because I was too much trouble."

My breath caught.

Sofia had died in a car accident three years earlier.

Benjamin had been six.

I couldn't imagine the cruelty required to use that loss against him.

I pulled the blanket over his shoulders.

"Your mommy didn't leave because of you."

"Promise?"

"I promise."

When Benjamin finally slept, I went downstairs and told Luca everything.

He listened without interrupting.

By the time I finished, his face had gone pale.

Then Marco appeared in the doorway.

"Boss, I've been reviewing the hallway cameras from last week."

Luca turned.

"What did you find?"

Marco placed a tablet on the table.

The footage showed Vanessa speaking to a woman in dark medical scrubs outside the study.

The sound was faint, but the security system had recorded enough.

Vanessa's voice came through the speaker.

"Make sure he stays there until the evaluation is completed."

The woman asked a question.

Vanessa answered without hesitation.

"Once he's declared incapable of managing his own affairs, my lawyer handles the money."

Luca watched the recording twice.

Then he looked at Detective Brooks, who was still reviewing evidence in the study.

"Detective, I think you need to see this."

But before she could respond, Marco paused the footage and enlarged the visitor's identification badge.

The woman's name was Dr. Evelyn Ward.

And according to a second document Marco had just discovered, she had already submitted a medical assessment of Benjamin.

An assessment dated three days earlier.

Even though she had never examined him.
