Chapter 8 - The Debt Behind the Door|

Five million dollars.

That was the amount Grant Hale allegedly owed after a disastrous series of real estate investments.

And somehow, his sister had decided that a nine-year-old boy should pay the price.

I learned the details the following morning, when Elena arrived with Margaret Bell, Benjamin's trustee.

Margaret was a silver-haired woman in her sixties who spoke with the precise confidence of someone accustomed to protecting other people's money.

She carried a folder containing records that her institution was permitted to share with Luca as Benjamin's father.

"There are several serious irregularities," she explained.

"Mr. Hale requested a payment of one hundred eighty-five thousand dollars for Benjamin's supposed initial treatment."

Luca frowned.

"One hundred eighty-five thousand?"

"Yes."

"For treatment that hasn't happened?"

"Exactly."

Margaret opened another document.

"The payment instructions directed the money to Cedar Hollow Management Holdings."

Elena leaned forward.

"The company appears to have an ownership connection to Vanessa through a separate investment entity."

My stomach tightened.

"So she would have received the money?"

"Potentially, through the companies involved," Margaret replied.

"That is one of the questions investigators are examining."

Luca looked toward the window.

"And Grant intended to keep requesting payments?"

"That seems to have been the plan."

Elena placed several projected expense statements on the table.

They included private transportation, specialized behavioral supervision, residential accommodations, medical consultations, and administrative fees.

The amounts were astonishing.

Each invoice presented a new reason to demand money for Benjamin's care.

A care program the boy didn't need.

A facility he had never visited.

And a medical condition that had apparently been invented.

"Would the trustee have approved those payments?" I asked.

Margaret shook her head.

"Not on these documents alone."

"That was why they needed a court order," Elena explained.

"Vanessa was attempting to build a case for broader authority."

Luca remained quiet.

Then he asked, "How did she know so much about the trust?"

Margaret looked uncomfortable.

"Someone provided her with information that wasn't ordinarily available to a stepparent."

Marco entered carrying his own report.

"Graham Pike accessed the household's archived estate documents six weeks ago."

Elena looked up.

"Did he have permission?"

"Not for those files."

The room went silent.

Graham had been in the mansion for years as an outside administrator.

He knew where records were stored.

He knew which staff members could enter private rooms.

And he knew how to manipulate a security system without attracting immediate attention.

He had been exactly the kind of accomplice Vanessa needed.

I remembered his polished shoes passing through the servants' corridor.

I remembered him asking me to sign updated employment forms.

And I remembered how he always addressed me as "the girl" instead of Claire.

"Do we know where he is?" Luca asked.

Marco shook his head.

"He hasn't returned my calls."

Elena raised a hand.

"Let Detective Brooks handle locating him."

Luca nodded reluctantly.

No one missed the importance of that decision.

Every instinct he had developed during his old life told him to settle betrayal privately.

But private revenge would only prove Vanessa's claims about him.

And Benjamin deserved something better than watching his father become the man his enemies described.

That afternoon, I found Luca in the garden beside Sofia's white roses.

He was holding a photograph of Benjamin's sixth birthday.

Sofia stood behind the boy, helping him blow out his candles.

"She would hate what this house has become," Luca said.

I stopped beside him.

"She loved Benjamin."

"She loved everything about him."

He smiled sadly.

"Even when he painted the kitchen cabinets green."

I laughed despite myself.

"He did that?"

"With permanent paint."

"What happened?"

"Sofia told me that if I could afford to replace the cabinets, I could afford to laugh."

For a moment, Luca looked younger.

Then his smile faded.

"I built an empire because I thought nothing could threaten my family if I had enough power."

I looked toward the mansion.

"And did it work?"

He shook his head.

"No."

"All that money, all those men, and my son was afraid to ask me for lunch."

I wanted to comfort him.

But there were things he needed to face.

"You can't change what happened."

"I know."

"You can change what he sees you do next."

He looked at me.

"You're not afraid to tell me when I'm wrong."

"I've been afraid plenty of times, Mr. Moretti."

"Then why do you do it?"

I thought of Benjamin's drawing.

"Because he's worth being brave for."

Luca stared at me for several seconds.

Then he nodded.

"Yes, he is."

That evening, Elena called with news.

Vanessa had filed an emergency guardianship petition through attorney Daniel Mercer.

It alleged that Luca was incapable of providing a safe home.

It cited his criminal associations, Benjamin's recent health complaints, and supposedly documented behavioral problems.

It also asked the court to consider Cedar Hollow as an appropriate residential placement.

But the most disturbing allegation was about me.

According to the petition, I had personally observed Benjamin's dangerous behavior and recommended intensive treatment.

I nearly dropped my phone.

"That's a lie!"

Elena's voice remained steady.

"I know, Claire."

"How can she put words in my mouth?"

"Because she believes she can make false evidence look legitimate."

I paced the kitchen.

"Then I'll testify."

"That may be necessary."

She paused.

"But there is one complication."

"What complication?"

"A sworn statement has been submitted in your name."

My blood went cold.

"What statement?"

"It claims you saw Luca approve Benjamin's placement."

I stared at the empty kitchen.

"That's impossible."

Elena took a breath.

"Claire, the document carries what appears to be your signature."

May you like

And at that moment, I realized Vanessa had found a way to make me the very thing I feared most.

Someone whose name could be used to hurt Benjamin.
