Chapter 11 - The Promise Caroline Made|

"Move away from her, Megan."

Antonio's voice cut through the cold night.

I stopped.

He stood beneath the loading-bay light with Sophia trapped against his side.

The handgun remained visible.

Around us, officers held their positions.

Nobody rushed forward.

Nobody wanted to turn a dangerous standoff into something irreversible.

Luca stood several feet behind me.

I could hear his breathing.

Slow.

Controlled.

But barely.

"Antonio," he said, "this is between you and me."

His uncle smiled.

"Everything was between you and me until Caroline began asking questions."

Sophia whimpered.

Antonio tightened his arm.

I forced myself to keep my voice steady.

"You're hurting her."

"Then perhaps her father should cooperate."

Luca stepped forward.

"Let her go. You want me, take me."

Antonio laughed.

"You think I want you dead?"

Luca said nothing.

"I built your empire."

"You stole from it."

"I protected it."

"You murdered my wife."

For the first time, Antonio looked genuinely angry.

"Caroline would have destroyed everything!"

Sophia began crying harder.

"No!"

Everyone froze.

The little girl's voice cracked.

"My mommy didn't destroy anything!"

Antonio looked down.

"Be quiet."

Sophia shook her head.

"She was trying to protect me!"

Something shifted in Luca's expression.

He took one slow step forward.

"Baby, look at me."

Sophia lifted her eyes.

"Remember what I told you?"

She nodded through tears.

"You're not responsible for what adults do."

Antonio scoffed.

"Touching."

Luca ignored him.

"Whatever happens tonight, none of this is your fault."

Sophia began sobbing.

I saw her fingers move toward the necklace.

She was gripping the silver clasp.

Then I remembered something.

The tiny initials.

V.B.

The hidden memory card.

The pearl Margaret had preserved.

Caroline had left clues in jewelry because she knew Sophia would keep it.

But maybe there was something else.

Something Antonio desperately wanted.

I looked at him.

"You don't have the evidence."

His eyes narrowed.

"What?"

"The recording you want isn't on the flash drive."

Antonio's expression changed.

I continued.

"Caroline made copies. She hid one inside the pearl."

He stared at me.

"You're lying."

"No."

He looked toward Luca.

Then back at me.

"Where is it?"

"Already with federal investigators."

Antonio's face twisted.

For several seconds, he seemed unable to speak.

Then he laughed.

"You stupid girl."

He looked toward Luca.

"You think that recording proves anything?"

Luca said nothing.

Antonio leaned forward.

"Caroline had no idea how much money moved through those companies. She didn't understand the consequences."

"She understood that you were stealing."

"She was going to hand everything to the government!"

"Because you threatened our daughter."

Antonio's grip loosened slightly.

Sophia noticed.

So did I.

An officer positioned near the loading dock slowly moved closer.

Antonio suddenly shouted.

"Stay back!"

Everyone froze.

He pulled Sophia tighter.

Then he looked toward Luca.

"Your wife was supposed to sign the transfer documents. That was all."

Luca went still.

"What happened when she refused?"

Antonio swallowed.

For the first time, uncertainty flickered across his face.

"She tried to escape."

"From whom?"

Antonio said nothing.

"Who was driving the second vehicle?"

The older man looked away.

Luca's voice broke.

"Tell me."

Antonio's eyes shifted toward Vanessa, who stood in police custody several yards away.

And suddenly I understood.

Vanessa began shaking her head.

"No."

Antonio laughed bitterly.

"Ask your fiancée."

Luca turned.

Vanessa was crying.

"Don't," she whispered.

Luca stared at her.

"What did you do?"

She couldn't answer.

Antonio tightened his jaw.

"She was supposed to follow Caroline and report where she went."

Luca looked horrified.

Vanessa sobbed.

"I didn't know they had planted anything in her car!"

Sophia began crying.

I felt my own eyes fill.

Vanessa had followed Caroline that day.

She had helped Antonio track her.

And three years later, she had entered Luca's home pretending to be a woman who wanted to build a family with him.

Luca looked at her as though something inside him had finally shattered.

Then he turned toward Antonio.

"Let my daughter go."

Antonio's expression changed.

"Not yet."

He began backing toward a parked truck.

But Sophia suddenly raised her head.

"Uncle Antonio?"

He looked down.

"What?"

Her voice was tiny.

"Mommy left me something else."

Antonio stopped.

I saw the danger immediately.

"Sophia—"

But the little girl continued.

"She said if someone ever tried to take me away, I should remember what she taught me."

Antonio frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Sophia looked toward Luca.

Then she did something none of us expected.

She stepped hard onto Antonio's foot and ducked out from beneath his arm.

His grip slipped.

An officer shouted.

"Drop the weapon!"

Antonio spun.

A sharp crack echoed across the loading yard.

May you like

I threw myself forward.

And everything happened at once.
