Chapter 5 - The Secret Inside the Music Box|

I had never held a key that felt so heavy.

It was barely two inches long.

Old brass.

A tiny blue ribbon tied around its head.

Yet Mrs. Carter was looking at it as though she'd just handed me a loaded weapon.

"Where does it go?" I whispered.

She glanced toward the staircase.

"Caroline's music box."

Sophia looked up.

"The one in Daddy's study?"

Mrs. Carter nodded.

My stomach tightened.

I'd dusted that music box dozens of times.

It was made of dark walnut, with a small painted ballerina on the lid.

Luca kept it on a shelf beside Caroline's photograph.

He never let anyone move it.

"Why didn't you tell Mr. Moretti?" I asked.

Mrs. Carter's eyes filled.

"Because Caroline made me promise."

"But she's gone."

"And I still loved her."

Her voice broke.

"Sometimes loyalty becomes cowardice before you realize it."

Sophia began crying quietly.

Mrs. Carter knelt beside her.

"Oh, sweetheart."

"Was Mommy scared?"

The older woman couldn't answer.

That was answer enough.

I looked toward the hallway.

"We need to tell Mr. Moretti."

Mrs. Carter nodded.

"Yes."

We found Luca in the study twenty minutes later.

Antonio was gone.

Two security guards stood outside the front entrance.

Vanessa had been escorted to a guest room while Luca arranged for someone to drive her away.

When we entered, Luca looked exhausted.

Not physically.

Something deeper.

As though every memory of his marriage had suddenly become something he needed to examine for hidden dangers.

"Sophia?"

She ran into his arms.

He held her tightly.

"Daddy, Mommy left something."

I placed the jewelry box on his desk.

Then Mrs. Carter gave him the key.

Luca stared at it.

"Where did this come from?"

The housekeeper explained everything.

I watched his expression change from confusion to disbelief.

Then grief.

"You knew Caroline was afraid?"

Mrs. Carter began crying.

"Yes, sir."

"And you didn't tell me?"

"She begged me not to."

Luca turned away.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he looked back.

"Why?"

Mrs. Carter swallowed.

"She said you were already carrying too much anger."

Luca closed his eyes.

Caroline had known him better than anyone.

She had understood what happened when the people he loved were threatened.

He was a man capable of enormous tenderness.

And terrible consequences.

Finally, he picked up the music box.

He searched along the bottom until he found a tiny keyhole hidden beneath the velvet base.

The brass key fit perfectly.

A quiet click sounded.

The wooden panel slid open.

Inside lay a small flash drive, a folded photograph, and a second envelope.

Luca lifted the photograph first.

It showed Caroline standing outside a brick building.

Beside her was a woman with dark hair.

Victoria Bellini.

And standing several feet behind them was Antonio Moretti.

The photograph had been taken only six months before Caroline died.

Luca stared at it.

"She was investigating them."

Mrs. Carter nodded.

"She found out something about the old Bellini businesses."

Luca opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

He read it silently.

I watched his face lose color.

Then he sat down.

Sophia approached him.

"Daddy?"

He looked at her.

For a moment, I thought he might collapse.

Instead, he held out his arms.

Sophia climbed into his lap.

Luca kissed her hair.

Then he began reading aloud.

"My dearest Luca, if you're reading this, then I wasn't able to tell you the truth myself."

His voice caught.

He stopped.

Sophia looked up.

"It's okay, Daddy."

He pressed his lips against her forehead.

Then continued.

"I discovered that the Bellini family and your uncle Antonio have been using several of our legitimate companies to move money. I believe Antonio has been stealing from you for years. But that isn't what frightens me most."

Luca swallowed.

"He knows who my biological mother is. He knows the secret Margaret kept. And he has threatened to take Sophia if I expose him."

I felt my knees weaken.

Luca continued reading.

"I don't know how far his influence reaches. I only know that someone has been following me, and I cannot risk telling you before I have proof."

The letter ended with a sentence that made Luca cover his mouth.

"If I don't come home, please promise me that our daughter will grow up knowing her father chose love over revenge."

Sophia reached up and touched his cheek.

"Mommy loved you."

Luca nodded through tears.

"I know, baby."

Then he inserted the flash drive into his computer.

A folder appeared.

Inside were financial records, photographs, and video clips.

Luca opened the first recording.

Caroline appeared on the screen.

She was sitting in her car.

Her face was pale.

"Luca," she whispered, "if you ever see this, I need you to understand something."

She glanced nervously toward the window.

"Antonio isn't the only person involved."

Luca leaned closer.

Caroline took a shaky breath.

"The person helping him is someone you trust with Sophia."

The video cut to black.

Then the screen displayed another filename.

THE NANNY — FINAL WARNING.

I felt Luca turn toward me.

And for the first time that evening, fear appeared in his eyes for a completely different reason.
