Chapter 4 - THE TUMBLERS OF TRUTH

|
Vanessa swallowed hard, her manicured fingers digging so deep into her clutch purse that the leather creaked.
“I don't know what you're implying, Luca,” she stammered, her voice trembling slightly.
“Maintenance comes up here to dust every Tuesday!”
“No one enters this room without my personal permission,” Luca replied, his voice dead cold.
“And maintenance doesn't carry heavy tungsten drill bits, Vanessa.”
Arthur stepped forward, leaning heavily against the edge of the mahogany desk.
“She brought a man here on Tuesday afternoon while you were meeting with the team in Detroit, son.”
“He carried a black duffel bag up the service elevator.”
“I caught them standing right here in front of this wall.”
Vanessa’s eyes flared with pure hatred as she glared at the elderly butler.
“You decrepit old liar!”
“You’ve hated me from the day Luca brought me into this house because you knew your easy ride was over!”
“Silence!” Luca roared, the sound echoing through the cavernous office like a gunshot.
The raw power in his voice made even Marco flinch beside the doorway.
I stood frozen by the library entrance, my hand secretly squeezing the scrap of paper in my apron pocket.
I needed to read Arthur’s note, but every pair of eyes in the room was locked in this deadly standoff.
Luca turned back to the safe, his large hand gripping the small brass key.
He inserted the key into the keyhole beneath the combination dial.
The metal slipped in smoothly, coated in fine machine oil that Arthur had maintained for decades.
Luca turned the brass key ninety degrees to the right.
A heavy mechanical click resonated through the hollow walls.
Next, Luca dialed the combination that his father had made him memorize on his eighteenth birthday.
Left to twenty-four.
Right to fifty-eight.
Left to twelve.
With each spin of the dial, Vanessa took another involuntary step backward toward the exit.
Marco stepped sideways, blocking her path with his shoulder like a brick wall.
“Stay put, Mrs. Moretti,” Marco whispered calmly.
The final tumbler dropped into place with a definitive clunk that sounded like a prison door sliding shut.
Luca grasped the chrome handle and pulled with all his strength.
The massive steel door swung open on oiled hinges, revealing the dark interior of Lorenzo Moretti’s private sanctuary.
Inside sat three thick leather binders, several manila envelopes tied with string, and a vintage cassette recorder.
Beside the recorder lay a single silver key and a stack of photographic negatives.
Luca didn't reach for the money or the deeds to the family properties stacked in the corner.
His hand went straight to the thickest manila envelope, which had his own name scrawled across the front in his father's jagged handwriting.
He snapped the string and pulled out a stack of glossy photographs and printed bank wire confirmations.
As Luca scanned the first document, the color drained completely from his face.
His breath hitched in his throat, a sound of genuine pain that I had never heard from him before.

“What is this?” Luca whispered, looking up at his wife.
“Tell me what this means, Vanessa.”
