Chapter 15 - THE TABLE OF FAMILY

|
The grand dining room looked entirely different from the cold, snobbish gathering of three months ago.
The long mahogany table was covered in crisp white linen, adorned with evergreen boughs, red winter berries, and dozens of glowing candles.
Seated around the table were old Joseph, Maria, the surviving retired staff, their families, and loyal friends who had stood by the Moretti name through decades of storms.
Laughter, clinking wine glasses, and lively Italian music filled the warm, festive air.
At the very head of the table sat seventy-two-year-old Teresa Romano, looking like a queen surrounded by her adoring court.
Beside her sat Luca Moretti, his posture relaxed, his face radiating profound contentment and peace.
I sat on Teresa’s other side, raising my glass in a toast with old Joseph, who couldn't stop smiling as he admired the feast.
The double doors from the butler’s pantry swung open, and the servers carried out the main course on heavy silver platters.
A magnificent, perfectly roasted prime rib, crusted with herbs and garlic, glistening under the golden candlelight.
The young server approached the head of the table, placing the very first, thickest, and most succulent cut directly in front of Teresa.
The entire dining room fell silent, every eye turning toward the elderly cook whose tears had once soaked her faded black dress in this very room.
Luca stood up slowly, raising his crystal glass of sparkling red wine high into the air.
“Three months ago, a voice in this room said that servants don't get retirement dinners at my table,” Luca said, his voice ringing with absolute clarity and emotion.
“Tonight, I want the whole world to know the truth of the Moretti house.”
“Those who labor in the shadows are not servants.”
“Those who feed our children, who wash our clothes, who drive through the night, and who hold our hands when the dark comes... they are not help.”
“They are the foundation.”
“They are the heart.”
“And above all else, they are family.”
The room erupted in thunderous applause, with guests standing to their feet, cheering and wiping away tears of profound joy.
Luca looked down at Teresa, his eyes shining with eternal devotion.
“To Mama Teresa Romano,” Luca proclaimed, clinking his glass against hers.
“The true matriarch of Chicago.”
Teresa looked around the crowded, joyful room, her heart swelling with an emotion so deep it took her breath away.
Her retirement was secure, her family name was honored, and her boy had become the honorable man his father had always prayed he would be.
She picked up her fork, cut a tender bite of the herb-crusted prime rib, and smiled with radiant peace.

“Mangia, my beautiful family,” Teresa whispered with a joyful laugh.
“Eat, before the food gets cold.”
