Chapter 9 - THE INTERCEPTED MESSAGE

|
Down in the cold, limestone basement, Vanessa sat huddled on an old wooden crate, shivering in her ruined evening gown.
The damp smell of wet earth and stored root vegetables clung to her expensive perfume like a cheap shroud.
The single bare bulb hanging from the ceiling flickered intermittently, casting jagged shadows across the stone walls.
A small metal grate near the ceiling looked out toward the rear gravel service driveway where security guards patrolled every ten minutes.
Suddenly, a soft scratching sound came from the high window grate.
Vanessa jumped to her feet, stumbling across the damp floor in her bare feet.
A small slip of paper attached to a fishing line was lowered through the iron bars, landing softly on the dusty concrete.
Vanessa snatched the note with shaking fingers, recognizing the handwriting of her father’s personal lieutenant, Dominic.
The boss knows where you are, the note read.
Luca is mobilizing all his men toward the south docks at eight tonight.
We are intercepting his gold convoy on Interstate 55 at seven.
The house security will be down to five men.
We are coming to burn the estate and pull you out at seven-thirty.
A sinister, victorious smile spread across Vanessa’s dirty face as she crushed the note in her fist.
“You arrogant fool, Luca,” she hissed to the empty room.
“You think you’re a king, but you’re walking straight into an execution.”
What Vanessa did not know was that forty feet above her head, Luca, Matteo, and Marco were watching her every move through a hidden fiber-optic lens embedded in the ceiling light fixture.
In the security command center, the video monitor showed her triumphant smirk in high-definition clarity.
Matteo chuckled darkly, leaning over the console.
“She took the bait completely, boss.”
“Dominic thinks our gold convoy is rolling out of the Bedford Park terminal at seven on the dot.”
“Salvatore has pulled eighty percent of his personal muscle from the Lake Forest estate to ambush an empty armored truck.”
Luca took a slow sip of black coffee, his face an impenetrable mask of tactical calculation.
“Salvatore’s greed has always been his greatest blind spot,” Luca said, tracing his finger along a blueprint of the Bellini headquarters.
“He thinks like a thief, not a general.”
“He couldn't resist the chance to steal forty million in gold while rescuing his precious daughter.”
I stood near the door, holding a fresh pot of coffee, watching this high-stakes game of chess unfold with terrified fascination.
Luca noticed my wide eyes and turned toward me with a reassuring nod.
“Claire, you have done more for this family tonight than ten soldiers could have accomplished.”
“When this is over, you will never have to clean another floor or answer another bell.”
“Thank you, Mr. Moretti,” I said softly.
“I just wanted Mrs. Teresa to have what belongs to her.”
“She will have that and more,” Luca replied, his eyes hardening as he checked the magazine of his custom .45 caliber pistol.
“Matteo, deploy the strike teams to Lake Forest.”
“While Salvatore is waiting on Interstate 55 for a phantom truck, we are going to seize every bank server, every safe, and every property deed in his private office.”
“By the time he realizes the trap, he won't even own the shoes on his feet.”
“And what about Vanessa, boss?” Matteo asked, cocking his weapon with a sharp, metallic snap.
Luca slid his gun into his shoulder holster and buttoned his overcoat.
“Leave the basement door unlocked at seven-fifteen.”

“Let her run straight into the courtyard.”
“I want her to see her father’s empire burn from the front row.”
