Chapter 13 - The Sentence of Exile

Brenda stared at her husband in absolute horror, realizing that the man she had dominated and manipulated for decades was completely gone.
In his place stood a battle-hardened sergeant major who was executing a decisive tactical retreat from a failed campaign.
"What are you saying, Richard?" Brenda asked, her voice trembling violently with rising panic.
"Are you saying you’re leaving me? On our fortieth anniversary?" she cried out, clutching her throat.
"No, Brenda, I am not leaving," Richard answered calmly, his voice chillingly steady.
"This house was built on the land my grandfather cleared with his bare hands, and I will die under this roof," Richard stated with absolute certainty.
"You, however, are leaving tonight," Richard commanded.
Brenda shrieked, stumbling forward as if the floor had dropped out from beneath her feet.
"You can't throw me out! This is my house! My name is on the deed!" Brenda screamed hysterically.
"Pack one suitcase, Brenda," Richard said, completely unmoved by her screeching theatrics.
"You will take your car and drive out to the cabin at Pomona Lake," Richard ordered, pointing toward the garage.
"You will stay there alone until you find a licensed clinical psychologist and begin intensive counseling," Richard dictated.
"You will reflect on why your heart is so thoroughly rotten that you would frame an innocent war veteran just to satisfy your petty ego," he said.
"And if you ever set foot on this property without my written permission, I will file for divorce the following morning," Richard stated with cold finality.
Brenda collapsed against the mantle, sobbing loudly and pulling at her hair in a display of dramatic misery.
"Mark! Tell your father he’s being insane! You can't let him do this to your mother!" Brenda begged, turning her tearful face toward her son.
Mark looked at her with eyes that were utterly cold, vacant of any filial sympathy.
"You made your bed, Brenda," Mark said quietly, refusing to even use the word 'mother'.
"You were willing to destroy my marriage, my reputation, and my happiness just to win a sick power struggle," Mark told her.
"You deserve every single ounce of loneliness coming your way," he added without hesitation.
Brenda realized she had completely lost all leverage, her manipulation bouncing uselessly off the united front before her.
With dragging feet and loud, choking sobs, Brenda turned and shuffled slowly up the grand staircase.
Her heavy footsteps echoed upstairs as she frantically pulled clothes from her closet, packing a bag in total disgrace.
Ten minutes later, she dragged a single Louis Vuitton suitcase down the stairs, refusing to meet anyone's gaze.
She scurried out through the kitchen into the garage like a frightened rodent fleeing a collapsing structure.
The garage door rattled loudly as it opened, followed by the roar of her Lexus engine backing down the driveway.

The headlights swept across the dining room windows, illuminating the shattered china one last time before disappearing into the dark Kansas night.
The house fell completely silent, the toxic storm finally cleared from the atmosphere.
