Chapter 9 - The Severed Ring

|

Mark took two deliberate steps toward his mother, each footstep echoing loudly across the hardwood floor.

Brenda raised her hands defensively, tears of panic finally breaking through her crumbling facade of elegance.

"Marky, please, listen to your mother," Brenda whimpered, using his childhood nickname in a desperate bid for sympathy.

"I did it out of love! I only wanted what was best for you, darling!" she cried, her voice cracking with desperation.

"She’s an outsider, Mark! She doesn't share our values, she doesn't belong in our circle!" Brenda tried to justify her actions.

"She spent years running around with rough soldiers in foreign deserts, Mark! She isn't a proper wife for a rising executive!" Brenda wept.

Mark stopped two feet away from her, towering over her trembling frame.

"Don't you ever call me Marky again," Mark said, his voice deadly quiet, laced with an absolute finality that chilled the room.

He slowly reached down to his left hand, grasping the simple gold wedding band on his ring finger.

Brenda’s breath hitched in her throat, her eyes widening in sheer terror as she watched his fingers move.

"Mark, what are you doing? Don't do this!" Brenda begged, reaching out toward him.

Mark twisted the gold ring, pulling it off his finger with slow, deliberate precision.

He held it up between his thumb and forefinger, letting the crystal chandelier illuminate the polished metal.

"Do you know what this ring represents, Mother?" Mark asked, staring directly into her tear-filled eyes.

"It represents loyalty, honor, and unconditional protection," Mark said, his voice steady and resolute.

"Values you clearly know nothing about," he added with cutting precision.

Mark turned his back on Brenda, completely dismissing her presence as if she had ceased to exist.

He walked across the room, stepping right over the shattered china and the spilled makeup from my purse.

He stopped directly in front of me, taking my left hand into his large, warm palms.

With absolute reverence, Mark took my wedding band, kissed the knuckle of my finger, and gently slid the ring back into its rightful place.

"I made a vow before God to honor and protect this woman," Mark declared, his voice carrying clearly to every guest in the room.

"She is the bravest, most honorable human being I have ever known in my life," he said, looking deeply into my eyes.

"And if being part of this family means tolerating your cruelty, your snobbery, and your toxic games, then I don't want to be part of it anymore," Mark stated firmly.

Mark turned his head slightly, addressing Brenda over his shoulder without looking at her face.

"You are dead to me, Brenda," Mark said with cold finality.

"Do not call me, do not come to our home, and do not ever speak my wife's name again."

Brenda let out a wailing screech of pure agony, collapsing onto her knees against the dining room floorboards.

She buried her face in her hands, her carefully styled hair coming undone as she sobbed into the Persian rug.

None of the guests moved to comfort her; they simply watched the monster reap the harvest of her own malice.
