Chapter 8 - The Architecture of Malice

The confession hung in the air like toxic fallout, sickening every person seated at the luxurious dining table.
Dr. Gable slowly stood up from his chair, his expression hardened with an overwhelming sense of profound disgust.
"Good God, Brenda," Dr. Gable said, shaking his head in complete revulsion.
"I have known you for thirty years, but I never imagined you were capable of something so utterly vile," the doctor said coldly.
Brenda backed away toward the antique sideboard, her hands clawing desperately at the polished wood behind her.
"He's lying! Trevor is a drug addict and a degenerate gambler!" Brenda shrieked, instantly throwing her own nephew to the wolves.
"He stole the key from my purse! He concocted this whole story to save his own miserable skin!" she shouted frantically.
Trevor let out a bitter, hysterical laugh, reaching into his pocket once more and pulling out his smartphone.
"I recorded the conversation, Aunt Brenda!" Trevor yelled, waving the bright screen in the air for all the guests to see.
"You called me yesterday afternoon while I was at the gym, remember?" Trevor shouted, tapping the glass aggressively.
"You told me exactly how the setup was going to go down, word for word!" he announced, his voice filled with venomous spite.
"You said, 'I’m going to make sure that soldier tramp never sets foot in my family again'!" Trevor quoted directly from memory.
Trevor hit the play button on his phone, and Brenda’s unmistakable, sharp voice filled the silent dining room through the speaker.
"Just grab the envelope when everyone sits down for the soup course, Trevor," Brenda’s recorded voice echoed clearly.
"I’ll make a scene, demand her bag, and when she refuses, it’ll prove she’s hiding something," the recording continued ruthlessly.
"Mark will have no choice but to throw her out of his life for good," Brenda’s voice finished with chilling satisfaction.
Trevor stopped the audio, glaring at his aunt with raw hatred.
"You used me, Brenda! You knew I was desperate for money, and you set me up just as much as you set her up!" Trevor screamed.
Mark closed his eyes, taking a deep, shuddering breath as if he had just been punched in the solar plexus.
When he opened his eyes, all the warmth and filial affection that had once existed for his mother had completely vanished.
He looked at Brenda not as a son looks at a mother, but as a stranger looks at something utterly repulsive.
Richard stood motionless in the center of the room, his head bowed, looking older than his seventy-two years.
The Command Sergeant Major, who had survived three combat tours and stared down enemy snipers, looked utterly broken by the treason within his own house.
I stood beside Mark, feeling a cold calm wash over me, replacing the tension that had gripped my muscles.
I didn't feel anger; I felt an overwhelming sense of vindication mixed with profound pity for the pathetic woman standing before us.
Brenda looked around the room, searching desperately for a single sympathetic face among her wealthy peers.

She found none.
Her luxury anniversary dinner had transformed into her public execution, and there was nowhere left for her to hide.
