Chapter 12 - The Iron Vow

|

The dawn broke cold and clear over the Hudson Valley, painting the frosted pines in sharp strokes of amber and gold.

Roman lay resting on the library sofa, his breathing deep and even as the sedative in the pain medication took effect.

Nora sat on the hardwood floor beside him, her back resting against the leather cushions, her hand loosely entwined with his fingers.

She hadn't slept a single wink, keeping watch through the quiet morning hours while Lev and his men secured the estate grounds.

Every time Roman had stirred in his feverish sleep, his grip on her hand had tightened, as if anchoring himself to her presence.

When his hazel eyes finally fluttered open, the harsh shadows of pain had receded, replaced by profound clarity.

He turned his head, looking down at Nora sitting beside him, her face smudged with soot and her hair tangled from the night’s violence.

"You stayed," Roman whispered, his deep voice rough with morning sleep and emotion.

"Of course I stayed," Nora replied softly, squeezing his warm hand.

"Someone had to make sure you didn't pull your stitches out."

Roman slowly pulled himself up onto one elbow, ignoring the dull ache in his side as he looked at her with unshielded devotion.

"In my world, people only stay when there is a contract, a debt, or a gun pointed at their heads," he said quietly.

"You don't owe me anything, Nora."

"You could have taken my car and disappeared into the night."

Nora looked down at their joined hands, tracing the faint calluses on his knuckles with her thumb.

"I didn't stay because of a debt, Roman," she admitted, looking up into his intense, searching gaze.

"I stayed because when those men kicked down the door, my biggest fear wasn't dying."

"It was the thought of living in a world where you didn't exist."

Roman’s breath caught in his throat, a look of profound, almost reverent awe softening his rugged features.

He reached out with his free hand, cupping the back of her head and pulling her gently upward until their lips met.

The kiss was slow, deep, and intoxicatingly sweet, sealed with the unspoken promises of two souls bound by fire.

When they parted, Lev knocked politely on the open doorframe, holding a secure satellite tablet.

"Pardon the interruption, Boss," Lev said, looking down at the digital display.

"Our surveillance team just intercepted an emergency communication between Julian Rossi and Cassian."

Roman sat up straight, the lethargic haze of his injury instantly vanishing behind a wall of cold, strategic steel.

"What did they say?" Roman demanded, his voice hardening back into command.

"Rossi knows the attack on this estate failed," Lev reported.

"He is liquidating his offshore accounts through Aegis Capital and preparing to flee the country from the Port of Newark at midnight."

"He is loading fifty million dollars in cash and bearer bonds onto a container freighter named the Northern Star."

Nora stood up, her sharp analytical mind instantly connecting the logistical threads.

"The Northern Star is registered under our subsidiary," Nora said, her eyes flashing with triumphant determination.

"I still have the master digital override codes for the port’s computerized crane network."

Roman stood up from the sofa, moving with steady, lethal purpose despite the bandage wrapped around his torso.

He looked at Nora, his hazel eyes blazing with an indomitable, shared resolve.

"Then we finish this tonight," Roman declared, his voice echoing through the stone library.

"We cut Rossi’s escape route, we bury Cassian’s treason, and we take back our city."
