Chapter 14 - The Key to the Cage

Forty-eight hours later, the city’s headlines were dominated by a single, explosive story: THE FALL OF THE ROSSI SYNDICATE.
Julian Rossi and thirty-two corrupt executives, including Greg Adams and Cassian, had been indicted on sweeping federal charges without bail.
The threat that had hung over Nora’s life had been completely and systematically eradicated.
Nora stood in the middle of her renovated apartment, looking around at the freshly painted walls and newly replaced front door.
Roman’s personal contractors had worked around the clock, restoring her home to immaculate perfection within two days.
Her clothes hung neatly in the closet, her furniture had been polished, and a massive vase of white lilies sat on her dining table.
Everything was back exactly the way it had been before Tuesday night.
Except Nora was no longer the same woman who had climbed out of that restaurant window.
A knock sounded at her door, gentle and hesitant.
She opened it to find Roman standing in the hallway, wearing a tailored charcoal suit and a long cashmere overcoat.
He looked magnificent, towering in the narrow apartment corridor, holding a thick leather portfolio in his gloved hands.
"May I come in?" he asked softly, his hazel eyes searching hers with uncharacteristic hesitation.
"Always," Nora answered, stepping aside to let him enter her modest living room.
Roman walked in, looking around the small space with quiet respect, as if entering a sacred sanctuary.
He set the leather portfolio on the small coffee table and turned to face her, removing his leather gloves.
"What is that?" Nora asked, looking at the documents.
"The deed to this building," Roman explained, his voice low and remarkably tender.
"And the legal transfer of a five-million-dollar consulting retainer for your work on the port investigation."
"You are financially independent for the rest of your life, Nora."
"You will never have to answer to a mediocre boss, and you will never have to worry about your safety."
Nora looked down at the portfolio, feeling a sudden, agonizing squeeze around her heart.
"Why are you giving me this, Roman?"
"Because our agreement is fulfilled," Roman answered, his jaw tightening as he fought to keep his emotions under control.
"Rossi is in federal custody, Greg is in prison, and your name has been completely cleared of any wrongdoing."
"You are free, Nora."
"You can return to your life, your career, and your peace."
He took a step toward the door, his eyes dark with a profound, unspoken sorrow that broke her heart into a thousand pieces.
"You don't belong in my violent world, little bird," he whispered, his hand touching the brass doorknob.
"You deserve a man who brings you flowers in the daylight, not one who brings you gunfire in the rain."
Nora watched his broad back as he prepared to walk out of her apartment, the silence between them deafening.
She looked at the neat, quiet room around her, realizing that ordinary safety felt entirely hollow without the man standing before her.
"Roman," she called out, her voice ringing clear and authoritative through the quiet room.
He stopped, his hand resting on the doorframe, his shoulders tense.
"Do you remember what you told me in the alleyway when I fell out of that window?" she asked, taking a step toward him.
Roman did not turn around, but his voice was thick with emotion.
"I said many things."
"You told me that I belonged to you," Nora reminded him, her heart beating furiously against her ribs.

"You made a claim, Roman Moretti."
"And you don't get to break a contract just because you are afraid of what you feel."
