Chapter 15 - The Queen’s Gambit

|
The executive boardroom of Moretti Enterprises was filled to capacity on Monday morning for the annual shareholder assembly.
Fifty of the city’s most influential power brokers sat around the thirty-foot mahogany table, reviewing the quarterly earnings reports.
Roman sat at the head of the table, his face an impenetrable mask of granite as he listened to a droning presentation on shipping revenues.
His eyes were hollow, having spent three sleepless nights staring at the empty penthouse skyline, haunted by the memory of chestnut hair and fearless hazel eyes.
Suddenly, the heavy double oak doors of the boardroom swung open with an authoritative, resounding bang.
Every executive at the table gasped, turning in their seats as high heels clicked sharply against the polished marble floor.
Nora walked into the boardroom, radiating absolute power, confidence, and undeniable beauty.
She wore a breathtaking emerald-green tailored suit with sharp lapels, her hair cascading over her shoulders in flawless waves.
In her right hand, she carried the leather portfolio Roman had left on her coffee table two days before.
Lev, standing by the rear entrance, broke into a wide, triumphant grin and crossed his arms over his broad chest.
Roman shot to his feet, his chair scraping loudly against the floor, his eyes widening in complete and utter shock.
"Nora?" he breathed, his voice carrying across the silent, stunned room.
Nora strode directly down the length of the long table, ignoring the open-mouthed stares of the city’s top corporate elite.
She stopped directly in front of Roman, tossing the leather portfolio onto the center of the mahogany table with an authoritative slap.
"Your terms were unacceptable, Mr. Moretti," Nora announced, her voice ringing through the vaulted room with absolute clarity.
The executives exchanged horrified, bewildered glances, terrified that Roman would order his guards to remove the intruder.
Instead, Roman stood completely frozen, his heart pounding in his ears as he stared at the woman before him.
"Unacceptable?" Roman repeated, a spark of dangerous, intoxicating hope flaring in his dark eyes.
"You gave me a deed and a bank account and expected me to walk away," Nora said, stepping into his space until she was looking directly up into his face.
"You told me that I belonged to you in that rain-soaked alley."
"Well, I am here to amend the contract."
She reached out, grabbing the silk lapels of his charcoal suit jacket with both hands, pulling him down toward her.
"I don't belong to you, Roman," she whispered fiercely, loud enough for every stunned executive in the room to hear.
"You belong to me."
"And from this day forward, we run this empire together."
A slow, breathtaking smile broke across Roman’s rugged face, the dark, solitary shadows of his past completely burning away in her light.
A low chuckle rumbled from his chest, filled with pure, unadulterated joy and fierce pride.
"Is that your final offer, Miss Vance?" Roman asked, his hands coming around her waist, lifting her effortlessly against his chest.
"Non-negotiable," Nora replied with a daring, radiant smile.
Roman leaned down and captured her lips in a deep, passionate, and possessive kiss right in front of the entire boardroom assembly.
Nora wrapped her arms around his neck, kissing him back with all the fierce, unyielding devotion in her soul.
The executives erupted into spontaneous, thunderous applause as Lev laughed out loud, clapping his hands together near the door.
When Roman finally broke the kiss, his eyes were bright, fierce, and overflowing with an eternal vow of loyalty.
"Meeting adjourned, gentlemen," Roman announced, never taking his eyes off Nora’s glowing face.
