Chapter 11 - Lauren Finally Told The Truth

|
I read Lauren's message three times in Matteo's car.
Rose held the court order like something newborn.
Matteo kept watching her in the rearview mirror.
I did not show him the message on that drive.
I needed to know if it was a trap.
At home, I showed it to Samuel Greene privately.
Greene said we would never meet Lauren alone anywhere.
He said truth belonged in front of the prosecutor.
He called Assistant District Attorney Rachel Donovan immediately.
Rachel had already received the warrant and judge's order.
She wanted Lauren's statement under a formal proffer.
Greene put the call on speaker for Rose.
Rose said Lauren deserved one chance to speak honestly.
She said a chance was not the same as forgiveness.
I typed exactly what Rachel instructed me to type.
Lauren was told to come at four o'clock alone.
She was told the session would be fully recorded.
She was told she could bring her own lawyer.
Lauren replied within a single minute.
She said she would come completely alone.
She said she no longer trusted her own lawyer.
The conference room smelled like paper and rain.
Rachel sat at the head with a recorder ready.
Detective Sarah Mitchell stood by the window, notebook open.
Greene sat beside me at the long table.
Lauren entered in no makeup and a plain gray coat.
Her finger was bare where the stolen ring had been.
She looked smaller without the red gowns and smile.
Rachel explained the proffer in plain language.
Truthful words would not be used directly against her.
Any lie would void that protection instantly.
Cooperation would be reported, but nothing was promised.
Lauren signed with a shaking hand and asked for water.
Rachel pressed record and Lauren began.
She said Anthony revealed a hidden debt eight months ago.
He owed Victor Kane three point eight million dollars.
The debt came from a shipping deal hidden from Matteo.
Victor offered money or control as the only payment.
The Elena Marino Trust held fifty-one percent of Russo Maritime.
Whoever controlled that trust controlled the whole company.
Anthony learned Lauren would become trustee upon marrying Matteo.
The old trust rules treated a bride as a family officer.
Anthony built the entire plan around that rule.
They needed Rose declared dead before the wedding.
A living Rose could revoke everything and expose them.
A dead Rose could object to nothing at all.
Rachel asked who created the death certificate.
Lauren closed her eyes before answering.
She said Doctor Harold Finch signed it for cash.
Finch ran a small clinic in Queens owing Victor money.
Anthony paid him forty thousand dollars in cash.
Finch never examined Rose or even met her.
The certificate falsely listed heart failure as the cause.
Rachel asked who notarized the forged transfers.
Lauren named a notary called Lisa Grant in Brooklyn.
Lisa worked from a storefront near the appraisal shop.
Anthony paid her fifteen thousand dollars to stamp papers.
She never asked to see Rose or Matteo.
She never witnessed a single signature in person.
The forged signature was copied from an old contract.
Detective Mitchell wrote both names without looking up.
Rachel asked about the stolen jewelry.
Lauren said Anthony took pieces over three weeks.
He told Rose her failing mind was misplacing them.
He sold smaller pieces through the Brooklyn appraiser first.
A jeweler for Victor removed the real diamond.
That stone was reset as a pendant for Vivian Kane.
Vivian believed Victor bought it as a birthday antique.
A copy stone was placed into Rose's ring instead.
Lauren wore that copy so the theft looked consensual.
After the wedding, Victor would buy trust control cheaply.
I asked why she wore the ring at dinner.
Lauren finally looked directly at me.
Anthony said it would prove Rose gave it willingly.
She knew Rose would see it and stay silent.
She believed Rose was too confused to fight publicly.
She said she was wrong and deeply ashamed.
Rachel asked when her thinking finally changed.
Lauren's voice broke on the answer.
She changed when she saw the Pennsylvania facility papers.
Anthony showed her a brochure with locked doors.
He called it a quiet place for troublesome mothers.
Lauren understood Rose would lose more than money.
Rose would lose her home, freedom, and son.
She had told herself they were only taking things.
A locked facility meant taking a person entirely.
She said that crossed a line she could not defend.
She admitted she stayed silent two more weeks from fear.
She said fear did not make her innocent.
Rachel asked about Anthony trying to bribe me.
Lauren confirmed he offered me two hundred fifty thousand dollars.
He wanted me to recant my recordings and testimony.
He planned to claim I invented everything for Matteo.
She heard him practicing that lie on the phone.
She said Anthony checked her phone every single night.
That was why she had no recordings of her own.
She offered to do the one thing terrifying her.
Rachel asked what that thing was.
Lauren said she would wear a wire on Saturday.
Victor's charity auction would bring everyone together publicly.
Vivian would be there wearing the pendant.
Anthony expected Lauren beside Victor for photographs.
Victor intended to close the trust sale discussion there.
A wire could capture Victor admitting the diamond's origin.
It could capture Anthony admitting the fraud on tape.
Detective Mitchell explained the hidden wire carefully.
A device would sit inside Lauren's dress lining.
Officers would pose as guests and staff inside.
Lauren must not improvise or warn Anthony at all.
Rachel warned her that Victor Kane was dangerous.
Lauren said dangerous men were why she was here.
Greene asked if she understood Anthony's blame plan.
Lauren laughed without any humor at all.
She said Anthony had already written a blaming statement.
She said he kept it with a false passport.
Canada was his escape if the auction failed.
She refused to become the story he left behind.
Rachel asked if she feared testifying against both men publicly.
Lauren said she feared living with her silence even more.
She said Rose deserved witnesses who finally chose her side.
She said she would accept whatever sentence followed her cooperation.
Mitchell promised protective officers would remain near her until trial.
Lauren nodded and folded her signed agreement with careful hands.
Her phone began vibrating on the table then.
Every person in the room stared at the screen.
Anthony's name filled the bright display.
Rachel raised one hand for complete silence.
May you like
She nodded for Lauren to answer on speaker.
Anthony asked if she would stand beside Victor Saturday.
