Chapter 9 - Anthony Threatened My Brother

|

I read Anthony's message three times before the words stopped swimming.

Noah Cole was nineteen years old and six foot one and still called me when his laundry shrank.

He was studying automotive technology at a community college outside Columbus because he loved engines more than classrooms.

He shared a small apartment with two other students and worked weekends at a tire shop off the highway.

He did not know Anthony Russo existed until that text turned him into leverage.

I ran down the hallway to Matteo's study without knocking.

Matteo was on the phone with Samuel but he ended the call the second he saw my face.

I handed him my phone and watched the color leave his face as he read.

He said Anthony had finally made the mistake of putting a threat against an innocent kid in writing.

I said none of that mattered if Noah was walking to his car alone that night.

Matteo called his security chief Daniel Ortiz into the study and ordered him to contact their Ohio team immediately.

Daniel had worked for the family for fifteen years and moved like a man who had already planned three exits from every room.

Within twenty minutes he confirmed Noah's classes had ended and his roommates had not seen him since lunch.

I called Noah four times and each call went straight to voicemail.

On the fifth call he answered laughing because his phone had been charging in the shop office.

Relief hit me so hard I sat down on Matteo's study floor without meaning to.

Noah went quiet when I told him to stay inside with his manager until men Matteo trusted arrived.

He asked if this was about the rich family in the articles online and I could not lie to my own brother.

I told him a man I worked against had mentioned his school to frighten me.

Noah said he was not frightened and then proved he was my brother by asking if Rose was safe.

By midnight Daniel confirmed Noah was in a hotel with two guards and a dean who had been fully briefed.

Matteo paid for Noah's roommates to stay elsewhere that night as well because Anthony's men would not find an empty target and improvise.

Only after Noah texted me a photograph of a locked hotel door did I let myself breathe normally.

At one in the morning Anthony called from a blocked number.

He said my brother's safety was a temporary condition that depended entirely on my memory improving.

He said if I recanted my statements and admitted stealing the jewelry the Ohio problem would disappear.

He said I needed to meet him alone the next afternoon at a storage facility in Queens to sign a simple paper.

He said if Matteo or police or lawyers appeared anywhere near that meeting Noah would learn how serious he was.

I kept my voice steady and asked him what the paper would say.

He said it would say I had invented the recording and planted the brooch myself to extort the Russo family.

He said Lauren would withdraw her complaint once I signed and everyone could blame a desperate housekeeper.

After he hung up Matteo replayed my phone recording of the call from the study system.

He had recorded it with my permission the moment Anthony's blocked number appeared.

Samuel said the call alone might not be enough because Anthony would claim he was protecting the family from extortion.

Daniel proposed a controlled meeting with a hidden recording device and a full security team shadowing every block.

I agreed before either man could suggest keeping me safely inside the house instead.

I told them Anthony had chosen my brother because he believed a sister would trade the truth for family.

I told them my mother had not raised either of her children to sell an old woman for safety.

The next afternoon I wore a plain coat with a recording device sewn into the lining by Daniel's team.

Matteo rode in an unmarked car two blocks behind me with Daniel coordinating three other vehicles.

Samuel waited with federal contacts on standby because the threats now crossed state lines through Noah.

The storage facility smelled of dust and rain soaked concrete and every rolling door sounded like a threat when the wind moved.

Anthony waited beside unit forty seven with a folder and a pen placed neatly on a plastic chair.

He smiled like we were meeting to settle a landlord dispute instead of a campaign to erase his mother.

He pushed the folder toward me and told me the recantation had already been drafted for my convenience.

I asked him if two hundred and fifty thousand dollars was also in the folder or if that part required trust.

His smile widened because he thought greed meant I was finally becoming reasonable.

He said the money would arrive in two payments once my signed statement reached Victor Kane's attorneys.

I asked why Victor cared what a housekeeper signed about jewelry.

Anthony said Victor was tired of waiting for control of Russo Maritime to fall into the correct hands.

He said once Lauren had married Matteo and become trustee of the Elena Marino Trust she would have sold Victor the controlling shares.

He said Rose's signature on a forgotten successor paper had ruined a plan worth far more than her jewelry.

He said my photographs and recordings had made a clean theft look like a conspiracy because I could not mind my own business.

Every word landed inside my coat lining exactly where Daniel needed it to land.

I asked Anthony if Noah would be left alone after I signed.

He said brothers stayed safe when sisters learned their place in other people's houses.

Before I could answer tires screamed at the far end of the facility road.

Two dark vehicles cut across the entrance and men I did not recognize stepped out moving toward us too quickly.

Daniel shouted through my earpiece to get behind the concrete pillar.

Matteo's vehicles arrived seconds later but Anthony was already running between the storage rows.

Victor's men had not come to threaten me but to extract Anthony before he said anything else useful.

One of them shoved a rolling door down behind Anthony and the clang echoed through the whole facility.

By the time Daniel reached the far gate Anthony was gone in a gray sedan without plates.

I stood shaking in the rain with an unsigned recantation folder dissolving in my hands.

Matteo reached me and took the folder before asking if I was hurt anywhere at all.

I told him Anthony had admitted Victor's plan and the trustee scheme on a recording we still possessed.

Daniel confirmed the device had captured everything including the offer of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

For ten minutes we believed the recording might finally be enough to end the public lie.

Then Samuel called from the house with news that turned Matteo's face to stone.

He said Victor Kane had filed an emergency court claim arguing Rose Russo was mentally incompetent and a danger to her own estate.

He said Victor's attorneys had attached the smear articles and Anthony's accusation against me as supporting evidence.

He said a judge had agreed to hear the emergency petition the very next morning.

Rose would have to prove in open court tomorrow that she was exactly who Dr. Parker had already said she was.
