Chapter 12 - The Pendant At The Auction

|
Victor Kane's charity auction filled a Manhattan hotel ballroom Saturday.
Chandeliers hung above white linen and gold chairs everywhere.
A string quartet played beside a stage about generosity.
Every guest wore black tie or an expensive gown.
I wore a plain serving dress to stay close.
Detective Mitchell needed me near Victor's table all night.
Rose insisted on attending despite Matteo's fear.
She said Victor stole her mother's diamond in secret.
She would be present when it was finally recovered.
She wore deep blue and her husband's restored watch.
Matteo stayed within arm's reach of her constantly.
Lauren arrived twenty minutes after the doors opened.
She wore dark green with the wire hidden inside.
Her face was pale but her steps were steady.
She took her instructed place near Victor's table.
Anthony arrived beside her in an ill-fitting tuxedo.
He smiled and kissed hands he wanted to impress.
He never once looked toward his own mother.
Victor entered last with Vivian Kane on his arm.
He was silver-haired and calm as a judge.
Vivian wore black silk and a breathtaking pendant.
The catalog had listed that same pendant as lot forty-seven, and Vivian had agreed to wear it onto the stage when that lot was called.
The diamond hung from a thin platinum chain.
It flashed blue-white whenever she turned her head.
Rose saw it before I did.
Her fingers tightened hard around Matteo's sleeve.
She whispered it was too large to be another stone.
I moved closer carrying a tray of empty glasses.
Vivian laughed and tilted her chin toward a donor.
Light revealed the flaw I had prayed to find.
A tiny chip marked the diamond's lower edge.
It matched the chip Rose described every Sunday.
It matched the flaw missing from the copy stone.
My heart pounded against the shaking tray.
I set it down and caught Mitchell's eye.
I touched my earring, our rehearsed signal.
She nodded once and spoke into her sleeve.
The auctioneer began selling a villa week in Italy.
Guests raised paddles without pausing their conversations.
Victor was not bidding on anything at all.
He was watching Anthony across the table.
After three items, Victor rose toward a private room.
Anthony followed him without any hesitation.
Lauren looked at me once, then followed them.
I slipped through the service door, phone recording.
The private room held leather chairs and legal folders.
An unopened whiskey bottle sat beside crystal glasses.
Victor closed the door and the music faded.
He told Anthony delays had finally ended.
He placed a transfer document on the table.
It sold Russo Maritime control through the trust.
He ordered Anthony to sign as family representative.
Anthony said the wedding never happened and transfers froze.
Victor smiled without any warmth at all.
He said court orders could be managed by Monday.
He promised a new marriage filing and death filing.
Lauren asked what that could possibly mean.
Victor said she would still marry Matteo privately.
She said Matteo would never agree to that now.
Victor said agreement was for men protecting nobody.
He threatened Rose directly in the next breath.
He said Rose could have an accident in Pennsylvania.
He said she would never testify again after that.
He said a housekeeper with a phone could disappear too.
He meant Rose, and he meant me.
My blood went completely cold hearing it.
Anthony swallowed hard and picked up the pen.
Lauren stepped closer so the wire caught everything.
She asked Victor to state the pendant's origin plainly.
Victor shrugged toward the closed door.
He said Vivian's pendant held the original Russo diamond.
He said Anthony delivered it after removing the stone.
He said the copy fooled everyone until dinner.
He mocked Rose for speaking up that night.
Anthony laughed nervously and called his mother stubborn.
Victor ordered him to sign the document now.
Anthony demanded his debt be erased in writing.
Victor promised three point eight million would vanish.
He said that happened only when trust control transferred.
He said Lauren would be blamed if anything failed.
He said Anthony could reach Canada before headlines broke.
Lauren's hands began trembling visibly beside her.
She asked if he truly planned to abandon her.
Anthony told her not to cry before a partner.
He said she wore the ring for the cameras.
He said no jury would believe she was forced.
The door burst open against the wall then.
Detective Mitchell entered with four officers and Rachel Donovan.
She announced her name and badge number loudly.
She ordered Victor and Anthony to raise their hands.
Victor froze and stared directly at Lauren.
He asked if she wore a wire tonight.
Lauren lifted her chin and answered him clearly.
She said she wore the truth instead of his lie.
An officer sealed the transfer document as evidence.
Another officer read Victor his rights during arrest.
Anthony tried calling to Matteo in the hallway.
Matteo stood there holding Rose upright and steady.
He told his brother to save words for court.
Anthony was led past his mother without eye contact.
In the ballroom, the quartet had stopped playing.
Officers quietly approached Vivian at her table.
Mitchell explained the pendant was stolen evidence.
Vivian covered her mouth with both hands.
She said Victor called it a London estate purchase.
She removed the chain herself with shaking fingers.
She placed it gently into Mitchell's gloved hand.
Mitchell held the stone beneath a small light.
The tiny chip was unmistakable to everyone watching.
Rose reached forward, then stopped before touching evidence.
She said her mother dropped it in 1962 on marble.
Elena laughed then, calling a flaw proof of life.
Rachel promised its return through the court process.
Lauren waited by the service door with an officer.
She did not run or beg for mercy.
She surrendered her phone and purse without argument.
She told Rachel she would surrender herself as promised.
She asked only to say one sentence to Rose.
Rose nodded permission from across the room.
Lauren apologized for ever calling her confused.
Rose said truth was a beginning, not an ending.
Lauren was led away with unexpected dignity.
Victor shouted one final threat as officers removed him.
No guest in the ballroom moved to defend him.
The charity banners suddenly looked painfully ironic above us.
Hours later, the ballroom emptied and chandeliers dimmed.
Rose sat with Matteo and me at a cleared table.
The pendant was sealed away, but her watch remained.
She took my hand in both of hers warmly.
She said a diamond is only a stone, however bright.
She said family is people who stay and tell truth.
Matteo placed his hand over both of ours.
May you like
Rose smiled at us in the quiet room.
She said we had finally brought her family home.
