Chapter 4 - The Gesture That Stunned the House

The moment Emma’s head settled against his shoulder, Dominic Bellini froze completely.
The breath locked in his chest, and his powerful hands paused mid-turn above the crisp white document he was reading.
For over fifteen years, no human being had ever dared to touch Dominic without his explicit permission.
His instincts were honed by violence, betrayal, and the constant threat of assassination that followed his bloodline.
Any sudden movement in his personal space usually resulted in a drawn firearm or a shattered wrist.
Yet as Emma sighed softly in her sleep, nuzzling deeper into the crook of his neck, Dominic did not reach for his weapon.
He felt the gentle, rhythmic rise and fall of her breath against the open collar of his dress shirt.
A delicate warmth bloomed beneath his ribs, a sensation he had thought buried with his youth long ago.
Slowly, carefully, terrified of waking her, Dominic lifted his tattooed left arm and rested it behind her shoulders along the sofa.
He pulled his paperwork closer with his free hand, adjusting his posture so that her resting head would not slip.
At that exact moment, the heavy oak doors of the library pushed open a few inches.
Mrs. Alvarez appeared in the threshold, followed by two younger maids carrying fresh linens and morning water carafes.
The two younger maids froze instantly, their eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated terror at the sight before them.
One of the maids gasped so sharply she had to clap both hands over her mouth to stifle the scream.
They expected Dominic to throw the maid to the floor, to summon guards, or to banish her into the freezing dawn.
Instead, Dominic turned his head toward the open doorway with eyes like dark obsidian.
He did not speak a single word.
He simply raised his right index finger to his lips, delivering a silent, chilling command: silence.
Mrs. Alvarez stared at her master in disbelief, her weathered jaw dropping slightly as she took in the scene.
The most ruthless man in New England was sitting like a protective sentinel, holding paperwork while a maid slept on his chest.
Dominic shifted his gaze toward the back of the sofa, gesturing with a slight nod toward his heavy cashmere overcoat.
Mrs. Alvarez understood immediately.
Walking on tiptoe, the elderly housekeeper crossed the thick Persian rug without making a single sound.
She picked up the dark coat and handed it to Dominic with trembling hands.
Dominic took the garment and draped it tenderly over Emma’s sleeping frame, tucking the collar gently beneath her chin.
The maids watched from the hallway, their faces pale with shock as Dominic resumed reading his papers without moving an inch.
He remained perfectly still, refusing to shift his weight, enduring the cramp in his shoulder just so she could sleep.

By six in the morning, rumors were already whispering through every corridor, pantry, and security checkpoint on the estate.
The untouchable boss had softened, and a simple girl with an eye for numbers held the king of Boston in the palm of her hand.
