Chapter 13 - THE LAST SIGNATURE|

Vanessa looked beautiful that morning.

Her blonde hair was perfectly arranged.

Her cream-colored suit probably cost more than my monthly salary.

And the diamond ring Luca had given her glittered beneath the lights of Nora's conference room.

Nothing about her appearance suggested the cruelty she had inflicted on Olivia.

She smiled when we entered.

“Olivia, darling.”

Olivia stopped several feet away.

“Don't call me that.”

Vanessa's smile faltered.

Grant Mercer stood beside her.

He carried a leather briefcase and wore the confident expression of a man who believed expensive clothing could make dishonest paperwork look legitimate.

Nora introduced the people attending the meeting and explained that no document would be signed without review.

A written record of the discussion would be kept with everyone's knowledge.

Vanessa looked toward Luca.

“Is all this really necessary?”

He didn't answer.

Olivia sat opposite her.

I took the chair beside Olivia, close enough that she could reach my hand.

Vanessa noticed.

“Claire, I don't believe household staff need to participate in family negotiations.”

Olivia spoke before I could.

“Claire is here because I asked her to be.”

The room fell silent.

Vanessa looked irritated.

Then she forced another smile.

“Of course.”

Grant opened his briefcase and placed the proposed agreement on the table.

It contained several pages of carefully worded conditions.

Vanessa would withdraw her petition seeking authority over Olivia's affairs.

She would stop describing Olivia as medically incapable.

And she would support efforts to resolve disputed financial transfers.

In return, Olivia would release certain civil claims and sign statements concerning the previous medical authorizations.

Nora turned the pages slowly.

Then she pointed to a paragraph near the end.

“This language appears to characterize the earlier infant care arrangements as voluntary.”

Grant adjusted his tie.

“It's standard settlement wording.”

“No,” Nora replied.

“It's a factual statement my client disputes.”

Vanessa leaned forward.

“Olivia, we're trying to put the unpleasantness behind us.”

Olivia stared at her.

“Unpleasantness?”

Vanessa sighed.

“You've been through a difficult pregnancy.”

“You told the hospital my brother didn't want to speak to me.”

“I was trying to reduce stress.”

“You told people I wasn't capable of raising my child.”

“You were overwhelmed.”

“You tried to arrange for someone else to collect my daughter.”

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“Someone needed to make practical decisions.”

Olivia's voice began trembling.

“Matthew died, Vanessa.”

For a moment, nobody moved.

“I lost my husband.”

Tears filled Olivia's eyes.

“I woke up every morning trying to remember how to live without him.”

Vanessa looked away.

“And instead of helping me,” Olivia continued, “you made me believe the only family I had left was ashamed of me.”

Her voice broke.

“You took my grief and used it against me.”

I squeezed her hand.

Olivia took another breath.

“Then you tried to take the one piece of Matthew I still have.”

She placed her palm over her belly.

“Our daughter.”

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“You have no idea what it takes to manage a family like this.”

Olivia looked directly at her.

“Maybe not.”

She paused.

“But I know love doesn't require forging someone's signature.”

Grant immediately interrupted.

“Let's keep the discussion focused on the settlement.”

Nora closed the agreement.

“My client will not sign a false account of what occurred.”

Vanessa turned toward Luca.

“You're just going to sit there?”

“Yes,” he answered.

“Olivia is speaking.”

Vanessa stared at him in disbelief.

For years, she'd used his name to silence everyone else.

Now he was refusing to silence his sister.

Olivia reached into her handbag.

“I brought something of my own.”

She removed a document Nora had helped her prepare.

It was a sworn statement confirming that she had never voluntarily authorized Vanessa to take custody of her child, control her medical decisions, or replace Matthew's chosen trustee.

It also formally rejected the disputed consents and identified the signatures she believed were forged.

Olivia had already reviewed it carefully with Nora.

She signed it in front of the authorized witness arranged for that purpose.

Then she placed it on the table.

“This is what I want recorded.”

Vanessa stared at the signature.

Olivia's hand was steady.

“I know what my name looks like when I write it myself.”

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa stood so abruptly that her chair struck the wall.

“You ungrateful little fool!”

Grant reached for her arm.

“Vanessa.”

She pulled away.

“I did everything necessary to secure this family's future!”

Olivia didn't flinch.

“You mean the money.”

Vanessa looked toward the door.

“I'm finished with this.”

Nora stood.

“The meeting is over.”

Vanessa stormed out with Grant following closely behind her.

I thought that was the end of the confrontation.

It wasn't.

Later that afternoon, Detective Ellison informed Nora that investigators had obtained search warrants relating to the suspected fraud.

The accumulated evidence included Daniel's messages, Lena's preserved records, the hospital audit trail, the disputed financial transfers, and the documents submitted through Mercer's office.

Investigators searched locations connected to the scheme.

Additional financial records and communications were recovered.

Vanessa and Grant were subsequently arrested on charges arising from the suspected forgery and financial fraud.

I learned about Vanessa's arrest while preparing soup in Matthew's old kitchen.

Luca received the call.

He listened quietly.

Then he placed his phone on the counter.

“It's done,” he said.

Olivia looked up.

“She's been arrested?”

“Yes.”

There was no celebration.

No cheering.

No satisfaction in seeing someone else frightened.

Olivia simply closed her eyes.

After a long moment, she whispered, “I hope she never does this to another woman.”

Luca put his arm around her.

“So do I.”

The investigation and court proceedings would take time.

There would be difficult questions, financial disputes, and testimony.

But for the first time in months, Olivia could imagine a future that wasn't controlled by Vanessa's next lie.

Six weeks later, on a quiet Sunday night, I was helping her fold tiny baby clothes in the nursery.

Matthew's rocking chair now stood beside the crib, freshly painted white.

Olivia held up a little yellow dress.

“Do you think she'll like this?”

I laughed.

“I think she'll be too busy sleeping to have an opinion.”

Olivia laughed with me.

Then she suddenly became still.

The dress slipped from her hands.

“Claire?”

I looked up.

Her eyes widened.

May you like

A small puddle spread across the hardwood floor beneath her feet.

“I think,” she whispered, “my water just broke.”
