Chapter 8 - THE DAY OLIVIA FINALLY FOUND HER VOICE|

The morning of the emergency hearing arrived beneath a gray Chicago sky.

Snow covered the courthouse steps.

Reporters gathered outside after word spread that Luca Moretti's family was involved in a guardianship dispute.

Luca wanted Olivia to avoid them entirely.

Nora agreed that she shouldn't have to answer questions from strangers.

But Olivia surprised us.

She asked me to help her put on a soft navy-blue dress that had belonged to her before pregnancy.

It no longer fit comfortably around her belly, so we chose a loose cream-colored coat instead.

Then she fastened her mother's silver locket.

“Does this look all right?” she asked.

I smiled.

“You look like yourself.”

She studied her reflection.

“That's exactly who I want them to see.”

Inside the courtroom, Vanessa was already seated beside Grant Mercer.

She wore a conservative black suit and almost no jewelry.

Her face was pale, and she appeared to be crying.

For a moment, I couldn't believe the transformation.

This was the same woman who'd laughed while Olivia begged for food.

Now she looked like a worried relative seeking help for someone she loved.

When Vanessa saw Luca, she stood.

“Darling, please.”

He walked past her without answering.

Her expression hardened for one brief second.

Then she sat down and resumed looking heartbroken.

The judge, Margaret Holloway, entered shortly afterward.

Nora explained that Olivia opposed the emergency guardianship petition and remained capable of making her own medical and personal decisions.

Grant argued that repeated hospitalizations, emotional distress, and the disputed laboratory results justified emergency intervention.

He described Vanessa as a concerned family member.

I wanted to shout.

But Nora had warned us that the most important thing was to let the evidence speak.

Dr. Shah testified about Olivia's condition and her conversations with the medical team.

She explained that a complicated pregnancy did not, by itself, establish an inability to make decisions.

She also confirmed that Olivia had communicated her preferences clearly during her current admission.

Then Nora produced the laboratory certification.

There had been no collected sample supporting the alleged sedative result.

The entry was under investigation.

Grant shifted in his chair.

Nora introduced the original physician recommendation for continued observation and explained that the later discharge authorization was disputed.

Vanessa leaned toward her attorney and whispered something.

Then the judge asked Olivia whether she wanted to speak.

I held my breath.

Olivia stood carefully.

One hand rested on her belly.

The other held a small folded piece of paper.

“My name is Olivia Reid,” she began.

Her voice trembled.

“I was born Olivia Moretti, but Reid is my married name, and I want to keep it.”

I saw Luca lower his head.

“My husband, Matthew, died six months ago.”

Olivia paused.

“He was a wonderful man, and he wanted our daughter more than anything.”

She looked toward the judge.

“Since he died, I've been sad and frightened.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“But grief doesn't mean I don't understand what's happening to me.”

Vanessa stared straight ahead.

Olivia continued.

“I understand that my pregnancy has complications.”

“I understand that I need medical care.”

“And I understand that somebody used my fear to make me sign things I didn't agree with.”

She unfolded the paper.

“I wrote this because I was afraid I would forget my words.”

The courtroom became completely silent.

“I want to choose my doctors.”

“I want to speak to my brother whenever I need him.”

“And when my daughter is born, I want to hold her without wondering whether someone is waiting to take her away.”

A tear slid down my cheek.

Olivia looked directly at Vanessa.

“I don't hate you.”

For one second, Vanessa's expression softened.

Then Olivia finished.

“But I will not let you decide that my child belongs to you.”

The judge listened carefully and asked Olivia several questions about her treatment, finances, and preferences.

Olivia answered them herself.

She didn't look toward Luca for permission.

She didn't ask Nora what to say.

She simply spoke.

After reviewing the evidence presented, Judge Holloway denied the request for emergency guardianship.

She emphasized that the court had not been shown a sufficient basis to take decision-making authority away from Olivia.

She also directed that the disputed records be preserved through appropriate procedures.

The decision did not resolve the criminal investigation.

It did not mean Vanessa had been convicted of anything.

But it meant Olivia could leave the courtroom knowing that the emergency petition had failed.

When the judge finished speaking, Olivia covered her face.

I put my arm around her.

“You did it.”

She shook her head through tears.

“We did it.”

Luca hugged her carefully.

“I am so proud of you.”

Olivia smiled for the first time in days.

Then we stepped outside.

The reporters began shouting questions.

Vanessa stood near the courthouse entrance, speaking to a woman holding a microphone.

Her voice carried across the sidewalk.

“All I ever wanted was to protect a vulnerable mother and her unborn child.”

I stopped walking.

Luca's security team urged us toward the car.

But Vanessa looked directly at me.

Her smile was cold.

I understood that expression.

She wasn't finished.

An hour later, my phone began ringing.

A friend from my old neighborhood had sent me a link to a social media post.

It contained a photograph of me carrying a pharmacy bag outside the mansion.

Above it was a headline accusing a Moretti housemaid of secretly supplying dangerous medication to a pregnant woman.

The post claimed the maid had manipulated Olivia and encouraged false accusations against Vanessa.

My photograph had already been shared hundreds of times.

Strangers were calling me a criminal.

Some were demanding that I be arrested.

I stared at the screen until the words blurred.

Then another message appeared.

It came from an unknown number.

YOU THOUGHT SAVING OLIVIA WOULD MAKE YOU A HERO.

NOW LET'S SEE WHO BELIEVES A MAID.

For the first time since the nightmare began, I realized Vanessa wasn't only trying to destroy Olivia.

She was trying to erase anyone who had dared to stand beside her.
