Chapter 9 - THE PHOTOGRAPH THAT LIED|

By the following morning, my face was everywhere.

People who had never met me were calling me a liar.

Some accused me of stealing from the Moretti family.

Others claimed I had given Olivia medication that endangered her pregnancy.

The accusations spread faster than anyone could correct them.

A photograph that should have meant nothing had become evidence of a crime I hadn't committed.

The pharmacy bag in my hand had contained prenatal vitamins and a prescription Olivia's doctor had ordered.

I still had the receipt.

I still had the doctor's instructions.

But the people sharing my picture didn't care about those details.

They wanted a villain.

Vanessa had given them one.

I was sitting alone in the hospital cafeteria when Luca found me.

He placed a cup of coffee on the table.

“You haven't eaten.”

I stared at the screen of my phone.

“I'm not hungry.”

He pulled out the chair opposite me.

“Claire, put the phone down.”

I shook my head.

“They're saying I hurt her.”

“I know.”

“They're saying I stole your wife's jewelry.”

“I know.”

“And some of them believe I should be arrested.”

My voice broke.

Luca looked unusually tired.

“Nora is preserving the posts and contacting the people responsible for publishing false accusations.”

I finally looked at him.

“Can she make everyone stop believing them?”

He didn't answer immediately.

“No.”

That single honest word nearly made me cry.

Then he continued.

“But we can establish what actually happened.”

I wiped my cheeks.

“Why would anyone believe me?”

Luca leaned forward.

“Because being powerful doesn't make Vanessa truthful, and being a housemaid doesn't make you dishonest.”

I stared at him.

For years, I'd watched Luca accept people's obedience without questioning whether it came from respect or fear.

Now he was beginning to understand what happened when fear became a household rule.

“I should have listened earlier,” he said.

I swallowed.

“Yes, you should have.”

He nodded.

There was no anger in his expression.

Only regret.

That afternoon, Detective Ellison returned to the mansion with investigators to examine the jewelry accusation.

The photographs from my bedroom had already been preserved.

A security camera covering the third-floor hallway showed that someone entered my room while I was at the hospital.

The person had used a housekeeping access key.

Her name was Tessa Vale.

When Detective Ellison questioned her, Tessa began crying.

Vanessa had instructed her to place the sapphire bracelet inside my wardrobe.

She'd claimed the arrangement was necessary to catch me stealing.

Then she'd threatened to dismiss Tessa and accuse her of theft if she refused.

“I didn't know what else to do,” Tessa sobbed.

I wanted to be furious.

Part of me was.

But looking at her trembling hands, I recognized the same fear that had kept me silent for months.

“You should have told someone,” I said.

“I know.”

She looked at me.

“I'm so sorry, Claire.”

Her apology didn't erase what she'd done.

But her admission gave investigators another piece of evidence showing how Vanessa had manipulated the people around her.

The pharmacy confirmed what I'd purchased.

The prescription matched Olivia's medical records.

The supposed drug test remained unsupported by any laboratory sample.

Gradually, the story Vanessa had created began to fall apart.

Yet the investigation uncovered something more disturbing.

That evening, Elena Morales called while I was helping Olivia settle into her hospital bed.

“Claire, is Luca there?”

“Yes.”

“Please ask him to contact Detective Ellison.”

I handed the phone to Luca.

He listened without speaking.

Then his face changed.

“Are you certain?”

A pause followed.

“Don't delete anything.”

He ended the call.

“What happened?” Olivia asked.

Luca looked toward Nora, who was reading documents beside the window.

“The hospital found a separate file attached to your maternity records.”

Olivia sat upright.

“What kind of file?”

“It concerns arrangements for your baby's discharge after delivery.”

She looked confused.

“But she hasn't been born.”

“I know.”

Nora took the phone and called Elena for further details.

When she finished, she turned toward Olivia.

“The document appears to be a prearranged infant care instruction submitted by a third party.”

Olivia gripped the blanket.

“Who submitted it?”

Nora read the name.

Harbor Family Placement.

None of us recognized it.

The document claimed that a representative of the organization would assume care of Olivia's daughter after birth.

It referred to a supposed family guardianship arrangement and listed Vanessa Moretti as the authorizing party.

Olivia stared at Nora in horror.

“Can they do that?”

“No,” Nora answered firmly.

“An outside organization cannot simply take your baby because someone files a piece of paper.”

“But why would they send it?”

Nora looked at Luca.

“Because someone appears to have been preparing for the possibility that hospital employees might accept false instructions without checking the underlying legal authority.”

I felt a chill travel down my spine.

Vanessa hadn't merely been hoping that Olivia would lose custody someday.

She had been attempting to organize what would happen the moment the baby was born.

Then Elena sent Nora a copy of the questionable instruction.

I saw the most terrifying line before anyone else spoke.
