Chapter 12 - THE LAST DOOR VANESSA TRIED TO CLOSE|

The next two weeks changed the Moretti family forever.
Independent auditors examined years of business records.
Detective Brooks and her colleagues followed financial transactions through multiple accounts.
Simon Ward challenged the remaining guardianship petition and began preparing civil action to recover improperly transferred funds.
Luca spent hours answering questions about his financial arrangements and the authority he had delegated to employees.
Some of those conversations were uncomfortable.
The Moretti family controlled businesses that had long operated in the shadow of Luca's criminal reputation.
I knew there were parts of his life he had never discussed with me.
For once, however, he refused to let fear of exposing his own mistakes interfere with Nico's case.
"Give the auditors everything they're lawfully entitled to examine," he told Simon.
"If I approved something I shouldn't have, I want to know."
Simon nodded.
"That may create difficult questions for you."
Luca looked toward the window.
"My brother nearly died because people were afraid of losing money and power."
"I'm not going to protect myself by hiding the truth from him."
I realized how much Luca had changed.
The man who once believed control was the same as protection was learning that accountability demanded something harder.
Honesty.
Meanwhile, Nico was making progress in rehabilitation.
He had started practicing transfers with his therapists and working on specific hand movements.
Some sessions ended with frustration.
Others brought small victories.
But he no longer described those victories as worthless.
One afternoon, I was helping him organize paperwork for his return to college when Mrs. Delaney entered the room.
"There's a visitor asking for you, Miss Bennett."
I looked up.
"Who?"
"Paul Whitcomb."
My stomach tightened.
Paul stood in the front hall wearing a gray overcoat and carrying a leather briefcase.
He smiled as though nothing unusual had happened.
"Claire, good afternoon."
"What are you doing here?"
"I've come to resolve a misunderstanding about Nico's financial accounts."
His eyes moved toward the staircase.
"I need a few signatures before the auditors freeze the wrong funds."
I stepped into the hallway and kept my voice calm.
"Any documents concerning Nico should go through his lawyer."
Paul's smile disappeared.
"Simon Ward doesn't understand how these accounts work."
"Then explain it to Simon."
Paul leaned closer.
"You're making a serious mistake."
Before I could respond, Nico appeared at the end of the hall.
His wheelchair moved slowly across the polished floor.
"What signatures?" he asked.
Paul straightened immediately.
"Nothing you need to worry about, young man."
Nico stopped beside me.
"Actually, I do need to worry about them."
"They're my accounts."
Paul hesitated.
Then he opened his briefcase and removed several documents.
"These are routine authorizations."
"They'll allow us to protect the family investments."
Nico studied the first page.
His right hand trembled, but his eyes moved carefully across the text.
"Why does this say I'm appointing you to exercise my voting rights?"
Paul's expression changed.
"It's temporary."
"Just until your brother sorts things out."
Nico handed the papers back.
"No."
Paul blinked.
"Excuse me?"
"I'm not signing."
The accountant forced a laugh.
"Nico, you don't understand the financial consequences."
"Then you can explain them to my attorney."
Paul's voice sharpened.
"You're being unreasonable."
Nico looked directly at him.
"For nine months, people have used that word whenever I wouldn't do what they wanted."
"I'm not doing it anymore."
The front door opened behind us.
Luca entered with Simon and a member of the new security team.
His gaze moved from Paul's briefcase to Nico's face.
"What's going on?"
Nico answered before anyone else.
"Paul wants me to sign away my voting rights."
Luca's expression became frighteningly calm.
"Paul, leave the documents on the table."
Paul glanced toward the door.
"There's no need to make this dramatic."
"Then you won't mind my lawyer reviewing everything."
Paul reluctantly placed the papers down.
Simon instructed everyone not to alter them and contacted Detective Brooks.
Paul left without obtaining a single signature.
Within hours, the documents became part of the broader financial investigation.
The independent audit eventually identified approximately 1.8 million dollars in questionable payments from accounts designated for Nico's care and related expenses.
Additional transactions appeared connected to the proposed Harbor Point sale.
Investigators were careful not to treat every irregularity as proven theft.
But bank records, false invoices, and communications between Paul, Marcus, and companies connected to Vanessa were beginning to establish a detailed pattern.
The original Harbor Point transaction had never been completed.
That meant the family's most valuable property had not been transferred.
But the attempt to gain control of Nico's interests had already caused enormous harm.
Detective Brooks later informed us that prosecutors had obtained additional arrest warrants.
Paul was taken into custody on financial crime allegations.
Vanessa was arrested after investigators corroborated Marcus's account with physical evidence and financial records.
When officers approached her at the hotel, she initially insisted they had the wrong person.
Then she demanded to speak to Luca.
He declined the call.
Instead, he sat beside Nico in the mansion library while the news arrived.
For several minutes, neither brother spoke.
Finally, Nico whispered, "Is it over?"
Luca took his hand.
"The investigation isn't over."
"The court cases won't be over quickly."
"But she doesn't get to control your life anymore."
Nico nodded slowly.
I watched him lift his therapy notebook onto the table.
He opened it to a clean page and wrote four words with careful, uneven letters.
I CHOOSE MY FUTURE.
Then he smiled.
May you like
It was the smallest gesture in the world.
And to me, it felt like the greatest victory the Moretti family had ever won.
