Chapter 3 - THE SIGNATURE THAT COULD DESTROY EVERYTHING|

By midnight, the Moretti mansion no longer resembled the glamorous home where thirty guests had gathered for dinner.
Police cars lined the circular driveway.
The chandeliers remained illuminated above a dining table covered with unfinished meals, abandoned champagne glasses, and six forged cancellation forms.
Most of the guests had already given their names and left.
Vanessa remained in the drawing room with a lawyer she had summoned.
Marcus Bell had vanished.
And Nico sat beside the fireplace, staring at his trembling hands.
I was kneeling next to him when a woman wearing a dark blazer entered the room.
"Detective Avery Brooks," she introduced herself.
"I understand you found the medical documents."
I stood.
"Yes, ma'am."
She looked at my maid's uniform before returning her attention to my face.
"Then I'd like to hear exactly how you found them."
I told her everything.
Three nights earlier, Vanessa had ordered me to clean her private office after a late dinner.
While emptying the wastebasket, I noticed an envelope containing documents from Nico's rehabilitation clinic.
The papers had been torn only along their edges, leaving the signatures visible.
I recognized Luca's name immediately.
What frightened me was the handwriting.
After five years of preparing his correspondence, I knew how he formed certain letters.
The signature on those forms looked carefully copied rather than naturally written.
So I kept the documents instead of throwing them away.
Detective Brooks listened without interrupting.
"Did you tell anyone?"
"No."
"Why not?"
I looked toward the hallway where Vanessa had disappeared.
"Because I was afraid no one would believe a housemaid over Mrs. Moretti."
The detective's expression softened slightly.
"Fear can explain a delay."
"Now we need to establish what these papers prove."
She placed the documents in evidence sleeves and asked me to identify where I had found them.
Then she spoke to Nico privately, with Luca waiting outside the room at his brother's request.
That small moment mattered more than anyone realized.
For months, everyone had been speaking for Nico.
Detective Brooks was the first authority figure who asked him what he wanted.
When Luca returned, his brother was sitting a little straighter.
"I told her everything," Nico said.
Luca nodded.
"I'm proud of you."
Nico looked down.
"I was scared you'd think I was making trouble."
Luca crouched beside the wheelchair.
"You've never been trouble to me."
I turned away because tears were burning my eyes.
Then Luca asked the question that had been haunting him since dinner.
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?"
Nico's voice cracked.
"I tried."
Luca froze.
"What?"
"Three weeks after the wedding, I asked Vanessa to arrange a meeting with you."
"She said you were busy and didn't want to be disturbed."
"Later, she showed me a message saying you wanted me to stop asking questions about the accident."
Luca's jaw tightened.
"I never sent that message."
"I know that now."
Nico wiped his cheeks with his sleeve.
"But I believed it then."
Luca closed his eyes.
The realization seemed to hurt him more deeply than any accusation from his enemies.
He had built walls around his family to keep danger outside.
Somehow, he had allowed the danger to live inside those walls.
The following morning, a lawyer named Simon Ward arrived to review the family's legal arrangements.
He had represented the Morettis for years but had never handled Vanessa's personal affairs.
Luca showed him a photograph of the guardianship folder.
Simon immediately frowned.
"Who prepared that?"
"Vanessa."
"Then we need to examine it carefully."
Simon explained that Nico's physical injuries did not automatically give anyone authority over his decisions.
A court would require evidence before appointing a guardian, and Nico had the right to participate and obtain independent representation.
Luca looked relieved for the first time all morning.
But Simon wasn't finished.
"There's another problem."
He opened a folder containing the family's business records.
"Your father divided the voting ownership of Moretti Holdings equally between you and Nico."
"Major transactions require both brothers' approval."
Luca frowned.
"I know that."
Simon tapped the document.
"If someone gained legal control over Nico's financial decisions, they could attempt to exercise his voting rights."
I watched Luca's expression change.
"How much money are we talking about?"
Simon hesitated.
"Enough to make someone extremely dangerous."
Before Luca could respond, Detective Brooks called.
The rehabilitation clinic had confirmed that several appointments had been canceled through written instructions appearing to come from Luca.
The clinic's administrator had accepted those instructions without speaking directly to Nico.
But the most disturbing discovery concerned a separate medical report.
Someone had submitted a letter claiming Nico suffered severe cognitive impairment and couldn't understand financial decisions.
The report carried the name of his rehabilitation physician, Dr. Elena Park.
Detective Brooks had already contacted her.
Dr. Park denied writing it.
Then she revealed something even worse.
"The person who requested that report wasn't Mrs. Moretti," the detective said.
"It was Marcus Bell."
Luca gripped the telephone.
"Why would my security chief request a medical evaluation of my brother?"
Brooks paused.
"Because, according to the documents, Marcus was supposed to become the manager of Nico's financial assets once Vanessa was appointed his guardian."
The silence that followed was terrifying.
Vanessa hadn't acted alone.
May you like
And the people involved hadn't simply wanted Nico out of the dining room.
They wanted his entire future.
