Chapter 10 - THE DAY NICO FOUND HIS VOICE|

The courthouse was crowded when we arrived for Nico's guardianship hearing.
Reporters waited outside the entrance.
Several photographers raised their cameras when Luca stepped from the car.
But the person everyone seemed most interested in was Nico.
He wore a navy suit, a white shirt, and a tie he had chosen himself.
His right hand rested on the arm of his wheelchair.
His left hand held a small leather notebook containing his personal goals.
I walked beside him while Luca and Simon followed.
"Are you nervous?" I whispered.
Nico smiled weakly.
"Terrified."
I squeezed his shoulder.
"You don't have to prove you can do everything."
"Just tell them what you know and what you want."
He nodded.
Inside the courtroom, Vanessa sat beside her attorney in a fitted black dress.
She looked elegant, composed, and almost sorrowful.
When she saw us, she placed a hand over her heart as though she were the injured party.
I knew that expression.
She had used it countless times when Luca questioned her treatment of Nico.
This time, however, the audience was a judge rather than her husband.
The hearing began with Vanessa's attorney describing his client's alleged concerns about Nico's financial decisions.
He emphasized the motorcycle accident, the difficulty Nico experienced with everyday physical activities, and reports suggesting cognitive impairment.
Then he requested that Vanessa receive temporary authority over Nico's financial affairs while the broader petition was considered.
I watched Nico's face tighten.
Every word made him sound like a helpless child.
Vanessa's attorney continued.
"Mrs. Moretti has been deeply concerned about her brother-in-law's declining condition."
"She believes immediate intervention is necessary to protect his inheritance."
Simon rose.
"Your Honor, the evidence does not support that request."
He presented Dr. Park's signed assessment and explained the concerns surrounding the purported medical report.
He also introduced documentation showing that Nico's therapy had been canceled without his direct authorization.
The judge reviewed the evidence carefully.
Then she looked toward Nico.
"Mr. Moretti, do you understand why you're here today?"
Nico took a breath.
"Yes, Your Honor."
"My sister-in-law wants the court to give her control over decisions I can make myself."
The judge nodded.
"Would you like to tell me about your wishes?"
"Yes."
His hand trembled as he opened the notebook.
For a moment, I thought he might be too frightened to continue.
Then he began speaking.
"Nine months ago, I was in a motorcycle accident."
"I suffered injuries that changed how my hands and legs work."
"Sometimes I need help eating, dressing, and getting around."
His voice grew steadier.
"But I know who I am."
"I know what my money is."
"And I know when someone is trying to take advantage of me."
Vanessa shifted in her chair.
Nico continued.
"I was told my therapy wasn't helping."
"I was told my brother was tired of paying for my care."
"Both statements were false."
He looked toward Luca.
"I believed them because the people saying those things were people I thought I could trust."
His brother lowered his head.
Nico turned back toward the judge.
"I want to continue my rehabilitation."
"I want to return to college when I'm ready."
"And I want to make my own decisions about the life I'm going to live."
The courtroom was completely silent.
Then Nico said something that made my eyes fill with tears.
"Needing help with a fork doesn't mean I need someone else to decide my future."
The judge listened closely as he answered questions about his education, his property interests, and his understanding of the proposed guardianship.
Dr. Park then testified about her assessments and confirmed that she had not authored the report claiming severe cognitive impairment.
She explained the distinction between Nico's physical limitations and his ability to understand and communicate decisions.
Vanessa's attorney attempted to challenge the assessment.
But the questionable report and the lack of reliable evidence of an immediate need for guardianship undermined the petition.
After reviewing the submissions and testimony, the judge delivered her ruling.
"The request for emergency temporary guardianship is denied."
Nico closed his eyes.
The judge continued.
"Physical disability alone does not establish an inability to manage one's affairs."
"The court will not remove an adult's decision-making authority on the evidence presented here."
She also directed that concerns about the disputed documents be referred to the appropriate authorities.
Vanessa's face turned white.
Her attorney whispered urgently beside her.
Simon informed Nico that the emergency request had failed and that they would continue challenging the remaining petition.
Nico looked as though a tremendous weight had been lifted from his shoulders.
Luca stood beside him.
"You did it, little brother."
Nico shook his head.
"No."
His voice broke.
"I finally told them who I am."
Outside the courtroom, reporters rushed toward us.
One shouted a question about whether Nico blamed Vanessa for his accident.
Another asked whether Claire had manipulated him.
Before Simon could respond, Nico raised his hand.
The reporters became quiet.
"Claire didn't tell me what to say."
"She reminded me I was allowed to speak."
Then he looked toward the courthouse doors.
"And nobody is going to take that away from me again."
I thought the hearing would be the turning point that finally forced Vanessa to surrender.
But as we approached the waiting cars, she emerged behind us.
Her face was twisted with rage.
She marched directly toward me.
"You think you've won?" she hissed.
"You've ruined my marriage, my reputation, and everything I've worked for."
I held my ground.
"No, Vanessa."
"You did that yourself."
Her eyes narrowed.
Then she leaned close and whispered something that made my blood run cold.
"If Marcus starts talking, Luca will learn things about this family that you can't imagine."
Before I could respond, her attorney hurried her away.
May you like
I watched them disappear into the crowd.
And for the first time, I wondered whether Vanessa's secrets extended far beyond Nico's accident.
