Chapter 15 - THE TABLE OF HONOR

|

Luca stood before me beneath the sparkling glow of the grand chandelier.

The man who had once terrified every crime syndicate in the American Midwest looked at me with open, vulnerable emotion in his dark eyes.

He dropped down to one knee on the polished marble floor.

Gasps of pure delight rippled across the room, and Rosa clapped her hands with uncontainable joy.

Luca opened a small black leather box, revealing a breathtaking vintage diamond ring—the very ring his father had given Rosa on their twentieth wedding anniversary, completely restored and set in platinum.

“Claire,” Luca spoke, his deep voice carrying clearly through the silent room.

“One year ago, my life was built on sand, pride, and false alliances.”

“I was blind to the vipers at my table.”

“You stepped into the fire to save my mother, and in doing so, you saved my life and redeemed my soul.”

He took my trembling left hand into his strong, warm grasp.

“You built our foundation.”

“You brought light into this house.”

“You showed me that a real man protects his family not with fear, but with love and unwavering honor.”

Luca looked up into my eyes, a tear shimmering on his dark eyelashes.

“Claire Bennett, will you marry me and become the true lady of the Moretti family?”

The tears spilled down my cheeks as my heart overflowed with happiness.

“Yes, Luca,” I whispered, my voice choked with emotion.

“A thousand times, yes.”

Luca slipped the diamond ring onto my finger, and the room erupted into thunderous cheering and applause.

Marco whistled loudly from the back of the room, while Dr. Rossi raised his champagne glass in triumph.

Luca stood up, wrapped his strong arms around my waist, and lifted me off the floor as he kissed me deeply, sealing a promise that had been forged in fire, loyalty, and redemption.

When he set me down, Rosa stepped forward, her arms wide open.

She pulled both of us into a warm, fierce embrace, tears of unbridled joy streaming down her wrinkled cheeks.

“Now my home is complete,” Rosa whispered, kissing both my cheeks with motherly tenderness.

“Now I can rest easy knowing my boy will always be surrounded by love.”

The servants brought out a massive, five-tiered birthday cake covered in fresh cream, strawberries, and eighty-four glowing candles.

Luca took a silver knife and placed his hand over mine, while Rosa rested her hand over ours.

Together, the three of us cut the first slice of cake.

Luca picked up the plate containing the first slice, adorned with a delicate sugar flower.

He did not hand it to any visiting dignitary or prominent business executive.

Luca turned and placed the first slice of cake directly in front of his mother.

Then he leaned down and kissed her forehead.

“Eat, Ma,” Luca said with a beautiful, radiant smile that lit up the entire room.

“This is your table, this is your house, and you will never be sent away again.”

Rosa smiled through her tears, picked up her silver dessert fork, and took a bite of her cake as the violinists played an old Sicilian melody of peace, family, and eternal love.

Standing beside Luca, holding his hand as his ring sparkled on my finger, I looked around the warm, laughter-filled room.

The darkness was completely gone.

The vipers were locked behind iron bars, paying for their sins in cold concrete cells.

And here, in the heart of Chicago, an eighty-four-year-old mother sat proudly at the head of her son’s table, surrounded by the only thing that truly matters in this life: a family bound not by greed, but by loyalty, sacrifice, and unyielding love.
