Chapter 7 - THE GHOST IN THE SYSTEM

|
By 10:30 p.m., the storm had transformed the Chicago skyline into a blur of swirling mist and neon reflections.
We returned not to the grand mansion, but to an unassuming concrete warehouse on the south bank of the Chicago River.
This was Luca’s private command center, a fortified bunker known only to his most trusted inner circle.
Inside, banks of computer monitors glowed in the darkness, manned by three silent tech specialists typing furiously.
In the center of the room, seated safely in a leather armchair wrapped in a warm wool blanket, was Rosa.
Dr. Rossi stood beside her with an IV drip, monitoring her steady pulse.
When Rosa saw Luca enter the room, her tired face instantly illuminated with relief.
“My boy,” she whispered, holding out both arms.
Luca immediately dropped his weapons, discarded his wet coat, and walked over to kneel beside her chair.
He buried his face in her lap, allowing the fierce mafia boss to vanish completely in the presence of his mother.
“I got your bakery deed back, Ma,” Luca whispered, placing the worn yellow document into her wrinkled hands.
Rosa ran her fingers over her late husband’s faded ink signature, fresh tears spilling onto her cheeks.
“I never cared about the money, Luca,” she murmured gently.
“I only wanted our memories.”
“I only wanted to know that you still loved your old mother.”
“I will always love you, Ma,” Luca said, kissing her forehead with fierce devotion.
“More than my life.”
Then he stood up and looked at the lead technician sitting before the computer monitors.
“Have you accessed the offshore routing paths?”
The technician, a young man named Leo, nodded quickly.
“Yes, Mr. Moretti.”
“Mia gave us the primary encryption keys to avoid federal charges.”
“The one hundred and twenty million dollars was sitting in an escrow relay in the Cayman Islands, waiting for a final release authorization from Vanessa’s phone.”
Luca took Vanessa’s confiscated gold smartphone from Marco’s hand.
“Can we reverse the transfer without alerting the receiving bank in Detroit?”
“We can do better than that, sir,” Leo replied with a sharp grin.
“Because Carmine Falcone set up a mutual escrow mirror to deposit his twenty-million-dollar bounty for the assassination, both accounts are currently linked to the same transaction bridge.”
“If we authorize the reversal using Vanessa’s biometric signature, the system will pull back your mother’s trust funds—and automatically siphon Carmine’s twenty-million-dollar collateral into your mother’s foundation as an unrecoverable breach-of-contract penalty.”
A grim smile crossed Luca’s face.
“Do it.”
Marco held Vanessa’s phone up to her face as two guards forced her forward.
Her swollen, tear-streaked face unlocked the screen.
Leo’s fingers flew across his keyboard, executing a cascade of code.
On the main projector screen, two progress bars appeared in bright green text.
The first bar flashed: FUNDS RETURNED TO MORETTI FAMILY TRUST: $120,000,000.00.
A second later, the second bar flashed: FALCONE INDEMNITY BOND SEIZED: $20,000,000.00.
Vanessa let out a strangled shriek of despair.
“Carmine will skin me alive!” she cried, falling to her knees.
“He will butcher my entire family!”
“You should have considered that before you poisoned my mother’s tea,” Luca replied coldly.
Suddenly, a red alert flashed across the perimeter surveillance monitors.
Three black sedans with Michigan license plates had just turned onto the industrial access road outside the warehouse.
Carmine Falcone’s hit squad had arrived, tracking Vanessa’s phone signal.
Luca looked at the screen, then turned to his men.
“Claire, take my mother into the reinforced safe room behind the server racks,” Luca ordered softly, his voice devoid of fear.
“Lock the steel vault door from the inside and do not open it for anyone except my voice.”
I nodded, gripping the handles of Rosa’s wheelchair.
“I will protect her with my life, Mr. Moretti.”
Luca looked at me with deep, unwavering gratitude in his dark eyes.
“I know you will, Claire.”
May you like
“Now go.”
As the heavy vault door sealed behind us, the first deafening sounds of automatic gunfire shattered the warehouse silence outside.
