Chapter 14 - Sunlight on the Pasture|

Six months passed, and spring arrived in full, glorious bloom across the rolling hills of the estate.
The dark days of winter had melted away, leaving emerald pastures carpeted with wildflowers and lush green grass.
The Caroline Moretti Equine Sanctuary was officially completed, its beautiful white cedar barns and expansive paddocks glistening under the warm sun.
Twelve retired horses, rescued from neglectful auctions across three states, were now grazing peacefully in the sprawling meadows.
Copper was the undisputed king of the herd, trotting alongside the fence line with his crooked ear perked up whenever Ava called his name.
My sling had been removed months ago, leaving only a thin, pale silver line along my upper arm as a quiet reminder of that stormy night.
I was no longer wearing a maid's uniform; I wore a cream knit sweater, riding trousers, and polished brown boots.
Luca had officially appointed me as the director of the sanctuary, a role that filled every single day with purpose and joy.
My mother had made a miraculous recovery, walking without a cane for the first time in three years, and was currently living in a lovely guest cottage near the edge of the property.
Every Saturday morning, Luca, Ava, and I rode together along the forest trails behind the mansion.
Luca had personally taught me how to ride, guiding my hands on the reins with endless patience and gentle encouragement.
On this particular sunny afternoon, Ava was trotting Copper around the main arena, demonstrating her jumping technique over low wooden poles.
Luca stood beside me at the arena fence, his arm resting comfortably against mine as we watched her clear the hurdles.
"Look at her, Rachel," Luca said, his deep voice filled with undeniable pride.
"A year ago, she was terrified to speak above a whisper in her own home."
"Now, she rides like she owns the wind."
"She feels safe, Luca," I replied, turning my head to look up at his handsome, smiling profile.
"Children bloom when they know they are truly loved."
Luca turned toward me, his dark eyes softening with an emotion so deep and profound it made my heart flutter.
"You gave that back to us, Rachel."
"When Caroline died, I thought this house would be cold forever."
"I thought my only duty was to protect Ava from behind concrete walls and armed guards."
"You brought warmth, laughter, and truth back through our front doors."
Ava completed her lap and brought Copper to a gentle halt beside the fence, patting the horse’s sweaty chestnut neck.
"Did you see that, Miss Rachel?" Ava beamed, her cheeks flushed with rosy excitement.
"Copper didn't even hesitate at the water jump!"
"You were magnificent, both of you," I praised her, reaching over the wooden railing to scratch Copper's forehead right between his ears.
Luca looked at his daughter, then looked down at his watch with a small, knowing smirk.
"Ava, head over to the wash stall and help Graham cool Copper down," Luca instructed gently.
"Rachel and I will meet you at the creek clearing in half an hour."
Ava nodded enthusiastically, turning the horse toward the barn with a bright wave.
As she disappeared down the stone path, Luca took my hand into his, leading me toward the wooded trail.

"Come with me, Rachel," he said softly.
"There is one last promise I need to keep."
