Chapter 15 - The Promise Kept|

The afternoon sun filtered through the canopy of budding oak trees, casting shimmering golden patterns across the creek clearing.
The clear mountain water bubbled peacefully over the smooth river stones, untouched by the shadows of the past.
Luca led me to the exact grassy bank where we had laid out the picnic blanket months ago.
Sitting on a wooden bench beside the water was Ava, holding a polished cedar box bound with a fresh silver ribbon.
Copper was tied loosely to a nearby birch tree, happily grazing on clover with his floppy ear catching the breeze.
"What is this, Ava?" I asked, looking between the smiling little girl and her handsome father.
Ava stood up from the bench, walked over to me, and held out the beautiful cedar box.
"Open it, Miss Rachel," Ava urged, her brown eyes sparkling with pure anticipation.
With trembling fingers, I untied the silver ribbon and lifted the wooden lid.
Inside, resting on a bed of dark velvet, was the original brass stall nameplate, newly engraved with exquisite craftsmanship.
Beneath the word COPPER, two new lines had been delicately carved into the gleaming metal:
Protected by Rachel.
Beloved by the Morettis.
Tears spilled over my lashes, blurring the shining letters as I pressed the heavy brass plate against my chest.
"Ava came up with the inscription herself," Luca’s deep voice resonated beside me.
I looked up to find Luca kneeling on one knee on the lush green grass before me.
My breath caught in my throat as he pulled a small, black velvet box from his jacket pocket.
He opened the lid to reveal a magnificent, vintage ring featuring an oval sapphire surrounded by a halo of brilliant white diamonds.
It was not a cold corporate showpiece like the one Vanessa had worn; it was a timeless, graceful heirloom filled with warmth and light.
"This ring belonged to my grandmother, who brought it with her when she built our family in Chicago," Luca said, his voice trembling with genuine emotion.
"For four years, I believed that love was a weakness in my world, a vulnerability that only brought sorrow and death."
"Then you walked into my dining room with muddy boots and an old leather halter, willing to lose everything just to defend a little girl's broken heart."
"You taught me that real strength isn't about weapons, territory, or fear."
"It's about having the courage to protect the people who make life worth living."
Luca reached up, taking my trembling hand into his large, warm palm.
"Rachel Morgan, you have healed my family, you have loved my daughter, and you have captured my soul completely."
"Will you do me the greatest honor of my life, and become my wife?"
Ava bounced on her toes, clutching my skirt with both hands.
"Please say yes, Miss Rachel!" Ava begged with a joyful laugh.
"Copper and I already voted, and we both want you to stay forever!"
I looked down at the wonderful man kneeling before me, and then at the radiant little girl who had stolen my heart from the very first day.
"Yes," I choked out through my happy tears.
"A thousand times yes, Luca!"
Luca stood up and slid the sapphire ring onto my finger; it fit as perfectly as if it had been forged for my hand alone.
He wrapped his powerful arms around my waist, lifting me off the ground and spinning me around as the afternoon sunlight bathed the clearing.
When he set me down, his lips met mine in a deep, tender kiss that erased every shadow of sorrow that had ever touched this land.
Ava threw her arms around both of our waists, joining in a warm, unbreakable embrace.

A few yards away, Copper let out a soft, contented whinny, shaking his mane in the gentle spring breeze.
The storm had finally passed, the promises were all kept, and we were finally, truly home.
