Chapter 2 - The Mask Falls

|
The grandfather clock in the corner of the grand dining hall chimed once, sounding like a funeral bell.
Vanessa Bellini stood frozen under the blaze of crystal chandeliers, her painted lips parting without producing a sound.
Twenty-eight pairs of eyes remained glued to her, their gazes heavy with shock, judgment, and rising disgust.
These were men and women who ran empires, controlled shipping docks, and governed criminal syndicates from the shadows.
They were people who tolerated brutality, but cruelty toward a defenseless child was a line none of them dared cross.
Luca Moretti did not shout or flip the mahogany table.
His fury was far more terrifying than theatrical violence.
It was a cold, suffocating silence that drained the warmth from the entire room.
He stepped closer to his fiancée, his polished dress shoes making no sound against the Persian rug.
"I asked you a question, Vanessa," Luca said, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper.
"What other reason were you planning to fabricate to banish my son from my side?"
Vanessa’s chest rose and fell rapidly beneath the scarlet silk of her designer gown.
Her hands trembled so violently that a drop of vintage champagne spilled over the rim of her glass, staining the white tablecloth like fresh blood.
"Luca, you are blowing this completely out of proportion," she stammered, offering a hollow, desperate laugh.
"He is a child, and children exaggerate when they don't get all the attention."
Ethan shrank back against my apron, burying his wet face into the crisp cotton fabric.
I placed a protective hand on the boy's trembling shoulder, feeling his tiny ribs shudder with every sob.
"He is not exaggerating," I spoke up, the words tearing from my throat before fear could silence me.
Vanessa's eyes flashed with venomous hatred as she turned toward me.
"Know your place, you insignificant girl!" she hissed, baring her teeth.
"You are paid to sweep floors and wash silver, not lecture me on how to raise a family!"
"She didn't lecture you," Luca stated, stepping squarely between Vanessa and me.
The shift in his posture was instantaneous, turning him into an impenetrable wall of broad shoulders and dark tailoring.
"She saved my son's life while you handed him poison with a smile."
"It wasn't poison!" Vanessa shrieked, her aristocratic composure completely shattering into pieces.
"It was a harmless oversight!"
"Mrs. Carter warned you," Luca pointed out, his voice razor-sharp.
"The catering manager warned you."
"And yet, you deliberately intercepted Ethan's safe meal and placed lethal allergens directly in front of him."
Luca reached into his inner jacket pocket and withdrew his phone.
He did not look at the screen as his thumb slid across the glass, dialing a single speed-dial digit.
Within three seconds, the double doors at the back of the dining hall swung open.
Marco Rossi, Luca’s head of family security and trusted right hand, stepped into the room.
Marco was built like an iron vault, his face scarred and his tailored suit concealing enough firepower to level a city block.
"Boss," Marco acknowledged, his dark eyes taking in the scene with lethal efficiency.
"Lock down the estate," Luca instructed calmly, never taking his eyes off Vanessa.
"Nobody leaves the property until I give the order."
"And call the medical examiner and our family physician to test every dessert plate currently on this table."
A collective gasp rippled through the guests.
Vanessa took a frantic step backward, her heel catching on the edge of the carpet.
"Luca, no! You cannot do this to me!" she cried, her voice cracking with pure terror.
"My father will destroy you if you humiliate me in front of Chicago's elite!"
Luca’s jaw set into stone.
"Your father will thank me for not handling this according to traditional family laws."
He reached out with a single, steady hand and caught Vanessa's left wrist.
The motion was smooth, effortless, and unbreakable.
With slow, agonizing deliberation, Luca slid the seven-carat emerald-cut diamond ring off her finger.
The ring had belonged to his late mother, passed down through three generations of Moretti matriarchs.
Vanessa gasped as the cold metal slipped past her knuckle.
"Luca, please!" she begged, tears cutting black trails of mascara down her contoured cheeks.
"I did it for us!"
"I wanted one night where everyone looked at me instead of pitying the widower and his sickly boy!"
The dining room went dead silent.
Those cruel words hung in the air like toxic smoke.
Luca looked at the dazzling ring sitting in his palm, then closed his fist around it until his knuckles turned ivory.
"You never loved Ethan," Luca murmured, his voice laced with venom.
"And any woman who despises my son will never rule by my side."
He turned to Marco without sparing her another glance.
"Escort Miss Bellini to her quarters."
"Give her fifteen minutes to pack her personal belongings."
"If she is still on my property at midnight, remove her by force."
"Luca!" Vanessa screamed, flailing as Marco’s heavy hand clamped firmly onto her elbow.
"You'll regret this!"
"The Bellini family will turn this city to ashes before we let you disrespect us like this!"
Marco dragged her backward toward the service hallway, ignoring her hysterical screeching and kicking heels.
The heavy mahogany doors slammed shut behind them, cutting off the noise instantly.
The twenty-eight guests remained paralyzed in their seats, staring into their plates as if sudden movements might draw Luca's wrath.
Luca stood tall at the head of the long table, the diamond ring tucked away into his breast pocket.
He drew in a long, measured breath, letting the tension settle into his shoulders.
Then, the ruthless mafia boss did something none of his high-society associates had ever witnessed before.
He turned his back on the millionaires, the politicians, and the capos.
He knelt down on the hard floor right in front of me and his weeping son.
"Ethan," he whispered softly, his deep voice cracking with raw emotion.
The little boy peeked out from behind my apron, his dark eyes brimming with fresh tears.
"Daddy?" Ethan sniffled.
"You are safe now, buddy," Luca said, reaching out to cup the boy's tear-streaked face in his large, calloused hands.
"Nobody is ever going to make you feel unwanted in your own home again."
Ethan threw his small arms around his father's neck, sobbing openly into Luca's pristine black suit.
Luca held him tight, burying his face into Ethan's dark curls, entirely unconcerned with who was watching.
Over the boy's shaking shoulder, Luca's dark, piercing gaze slowly rose until it locked onto mine.
My heart hammered wildly against my ribs.
I was still clutching the silver fork, trembling from head to toe in my wrinkled housemaid uniform.
"Nora," Luca said, his voice softer than I had ever heard it before.
"Yes, Mr. Moretti?" I managed to squeak out.
"Take Ethan upstairs to his bedroom," he ordered gently.
"Stay with him until he falls asleep."
"I don't trust anyone else in this house right now."
I nodded, swallowing the lump of dread in my throat.
"Of course, sir."
I took Ethan's small, sticky hand in mine, feeling his fingers squeeze back with desperate relief.
As I led the boy away from the silent dining hall, I could feel the eyes of twenty-eight wealthy predators boring into my back.

I was just a maid trying to pay her mother's hospital bills.
Yet somehow, I had just helped blow apart the most powerful criminal alliance in Chicago.
