Chapter 13 - The Storm at the Gates

|

The winter blizzard hit Chicago with ferocious intensity at three o’clock on a Friday morning.

Sixty-mile-per-hour winds howled through the sprawling grounds of the Moretti estate, burying the surveillance cameras in blinding sheets of white snow.

Inside the master suite, I woke up with a sudden, violent jolt, my heart racing before my eyes even opened.

A muffled, hollow thud echoed from the courtyard below, followed immediately by the sharp hiss of severed electrical lines.

The bedside lamps flickered and died, plunging the vast bedroom into absolute, freezing darkness.

Beside me, Luca was already on his feet, moving with the lethal instincts of a predator born in war.

"Luca?" I whispered, my voice trembling as the estate's emergency red backup lights slowly hummed to life.

"Stay down, Nora," Luca commanded, pulling a customized black combat pistol from the concealed safe behind the headboard.

He racked the slide with a clean, metallic snap.

"They cut the main grid and jammed our satellite communications."

The heavy bedroom doors burst open, and Marco sprinted inside, carrying two tactical rifles, his face smeared with rain and soot.

"Boss!" Marco shouted over the roar of the blizzard outside.

"Mercenaries hit the south gate with thermal explosives!"

"At least twenty heavily armed professionals!"

"They aren't Bellini foot soldiers—they're Russian contractors!"

"Vanessa hired the Petrov syndicate using her offshore trust funds!"

Luca’s eyes flared with murderous rage.

"Where is Ethan?"

"I secured him in the hallway vault, but they breached the first floor!" Marco reported grimly.

"They're coming up the grand staircase right now!"

Gunfire erupted down the hallway—deafening, rapid bursts of automatic rifle fire that chewed through plaster, portraits, and antique wood.

Screams and returning fire echoed from our guards stationed on the mezzanine.

Luca grabbed my hand, pulling me toward the reinforced panic room behind the closet.

"Nora, get inside with Ethan," Luca ordered, his voice brooking no argument.

"Code six-eight-two-one."

"No! I'm not leaving you!" I cried, gripping his arm with both hands.

"They came for Ethan, Nora!" Luca shouted, grabbing my face and kissing me with fierce, desperate intensity.

"If they get past me, you are the only one who can keep him alive!"

"Protect my son!"

He shoved me toward the hidden vault door just as another explosion rocked the second floor, sending clouds of choking drywall dust billowing into the room.

I scrambled into the panic room, where Ethan was huddled in the corner, clutching his stuffed polar bear in absolute terror.

"Miss Nora!" Ethan wailed, throwing himself into my arms.

I slammed the steel vault door shut, but before the electronic bolts could engage, the digital keypad sparked and sputtered.

The explosion had fried the wiring.

The door would not lock.

My blood ran cold.

If the mercenaries cleared the master bedroom, they could simply pull the heavy steel handle and find us defenseless inside.

I looked around the small concrete room.

In the emergency cabinet, Luca kept an aluminum baseball bat and a small flare gun for signaling across the lake.

"Ethan," I whispered, kneeling down and looking into his wide, frightened eyes.

"Listen to me very carefully."

"Do you see that narrow laundry chute behind the metal shelf?"

Ethan nodded, tears streaming down his pale cheeks.

"It leads directly down into the basement wine cellar," I said, wiping his face with my shaking hands.

"I need you to climb inside and slide down."

"Once you are in the cellar, hide inside the empty wooden barrel behind the boiler."

"Do not make a single sound until you hear your daddy's voice."

"What about you, Miss Nora?" Ethan cried, clutching my fingers.

"I'm going to lead them away from you, sweetie," I said, kissing his forehead with all the love in my heart.

"Now go! Fast!"

I lifted Ethan up and helped him squeeze into the smooth aluminum chute.

He looked back at me one last time before letting go, sliding silently into the dark shaft toward safety.

I pushed the heavy metal shelf back over the opening, concealing it completely.

Outside in the master suite, the gunfire abruptly ceased.

Heavy combat boots crunched across the broken glass and debris.

"Search the closets!" a gruff voice with a thick Eastern European accent barked.

"The bitch and the boy are in here somewhere!"

"Miss Bellini wants the kid alive for leverage, but kill the woman on sight!"

I grabbed the heavy aluminum baseball bat from the cabinet, my knuckles turning white.

I wasn't a soldier.

I didn't have armor or training.

But I had a boy down in that cellar who needed his father, and I had a man fighting in the hallway who owned my entire soul.

I kicked the unlatched vault door open with all my might, screaming at the top of my lungs to draw their attention.

"Over here, you bastards!"

A mercenary in tactical gear spun around, raising his assault rifle.

Before he could pull the trigger, I swung the aluminum bat with everything I had, smashing it directly across his helmet visor.

The blow knocked him off balance, his rifle firing wild bursts into the ceiling.

I sprinted past him toward the hallway, turning myself into live bait to draw them away from the laundry chute.

Behind me, boots gave chase.

"She's running for the west wing! Shoot her!"

I rounded the corner of the gallery, bullets chipping the marble pillars beside my ears, my lungs burning with cold fire.

May you like

I had bought Ethan his life.

Now, I had to survive long enough to see tomorrow.
