Chapter 12 - Whispers in the Library

|
Midnight arrived with a gentle snowfall that dusted the leaded glass windows of the estate library.
The library was my favorite room in the entire mansion—a two-story sanctuary filled with ten thousand leather-bound books, spiral iron staircases, and a massive stone hearth.
I had changed into a simple cream cashmere sweater and dark jeans, my hair hanging loose around my shoulders.
I knocked softly on the heavy wood door.
"Come in, Nora," Luca’s voice answered from within.
I stepped inside, closing the door quietly behind me.
Luca was sitting on the leather sofa near the blazing fire, a single reading lamp casting a warm glow across his rugged features.
He wore a dark charcoal sweater and relaxed trousers, holding a leather-bound photo album in his lap.
"Come sit with me," he invited, patting the leather cushion beside him.
I hesitated for a brief second before walking over and sitting down, leaving a polite distance between us.
Luca looked at the gap between us, a faint, melancholy smile touching his lips.
"You still treat me like a monster who might snap at any moment," he noted softly.
"I treat you like the boss of Chicago, Mr. Moretti," I replied honestly, folding my hands in my lap.
"A title that carries a lot of ghosts."
"Call me Luca," he said, turning the photo album toward me.
"When we are in this room, there is no boss."
"There is just a man who is tired of being alone."
I looked down at the open page of the album.
It was filled with photographs from six years ago.
A radiant young woman with golden hair and a dazzling smile laughed into the camera, holding a chubby-cheeked two-year-old Ethan.
"Elena," I whispered, recognizing Ethan’s hazel eyes in the woman's face.
"She was beautiful."
"She was light itself," Luca agreed, his thumb gently caressing the plastic sleeve over the photograph.
"She hated the mafia."
"She hated the violence, the bodyguards, and the constant fear."
"I promised her I would get us out."
"I had liquid assets ready to transfer to Switzerland, real estate bought under alias names in the Alps."
"We were two weeks away from leaving when the hit squad caught us at a red light."
A tear escaped his eye, tracing down his cheek into his dark stubble.
The sight of the ruthless don weeping broke my heart into a thousand pieces.
Without thinking about boundaries or social status, I reached out and gently laid my hand over his.
"It wasn't your fault, Luca," I said, using his name for the very first time.
"You tried to protect her."
Luca turned his hand over, intertwining his long fingers with mine, holding on as if I were an anchor in a raging sea.
"After she died, I buried my heart in the graveyard beside her," Luca confessed, his voice breaking.
"I turned myself into a demon so nobody would ever dare come near Ethan again."
"I agreed to marry Vanessa because I thought cold alliances were the only way to build an iron wall around my son."
He turned his body toward me, lifting his other hand to cup my cheek, his thumb gently smoothing over the small butterfly bandage.
"Then you walked into our lives," Luca whispered, his dark eyes ablaze with raw, undeniable love.
"You took a fork from a poisonous cake."
"You stood up to Vanessa when twenty-eight killers looked away."
"You threw yourself in front of a deranged woman to save my boy."
"You brought warmth, laughter, and real food back into this cold museum."
My heart was beating so hard I thought my ribs would crack open.
"Luca, I... I am a housemaid," I stammered, my voice trembling with tears.
"My family has no money, no pedigree, no power in this city."
"The families will say I manipulated you."
"They will say I am after your fortune."
Luca leaned closer, his warm breath fanning across my lips, intoxicating and sweet.
"Let them say whatever they want," Luca growled softly.
"Pedigrees don't keep my son safe."
"Bloodlines don't read him bedtime stories about desert foxes."
"You do."
"I don't want an alliance, Nora."
"I want you."
Before I could answer, Luca leaned down and pressed his lips to mine.
The kiss was gentle at first, full of hesitant reverence, before deepening into a powerful, desperate hunger that consumed my entire soul.
I wrapped my arms around his neck, sinking into his strength, feeling the heavy burden of my past life melt away into the heat of the fire.
For the first time in my life, I felt completely protected.
I felt wanted.
I felt home.
When we finally parted, breathless and trembling, Luca rested his forehead against mine, his dark eyes shining with pure devotion.
"I love you, Nora Bennett," he breathed into the quiet room.
"I love you too, Luca," I whispered back, smiling through my tears.

In the shadows outside the estate gates, a black van cut its headlights in the snow.
The final reckoning had arrived.
